In English:
Preface to Sutra in English : sa khalvaya.m dvividhaH, upaayapratyayo bhavapratyayashcha. tatropaayapratyayo yoginaa.m bhavati —

Meaning in English : (sa khalu ayam) This trance is (dvividhaH) achieved by two ways i.e. (upaaya-pratyayaH) brought about by practice of means (cha) and (bhava-pratyayaH) brought about by the knowledge of objective existence i.e. the Universe. (tatra) Of these, (yoginaam) in case of Yogis, the trance (bhavati) is achieved (upaaya-pratyayaH) by practice of means.

Sutra in English : bhavapratyayo videhaprakRRitilayaanaam.19.

Meaning in English :

(videha-prakriti-layaanaam) For the Videha and Prakritilayas, trance is (bhava-pratyayaH) caused by the knowledge of objective existence i.e. the Universe.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

videhaanaam devaanaam bhavapratyayaH. te hi svasa.mskaaramaatropayogena chittena kaivalyapadamivaanubhavantaH svasa.mskaaravipaaka.m tathaajaatiiyakamativaahayanti.

tathaa prakRRitilayaaH saadhikaare  chetasi prakRRitiliine kaivalyapadamivaanubhavanti yaavanna punaraavarttate.a- dhikaaravashaachchittamiti.

Meaning In English :

(videhaanaam devaanaam) In case of the intellectuals called as Videhas, trance is (bhava-pratyayaH) caused by the knowledge of objective existence = Universe. (te hi) These Videhas = intellectuals (sva-sa.nskaaramaatropayogena chittena) with the mind functioning only so far as their own residual potencies exists, (anubhavantaH) enjoying the state of (kaivalya-padam iva) something like salvation = freedom, and (ativaahayanti) enjoying and living out the state of life, (tathaa-jaatiiyakam vipaakam) which is of same type of fruition of (sva-sa.nskaara) their own residual potencies i.e. the impressions of their actions.

(tathaa) Similarly, (prakriti-layaaH) Prakritilayas, (saadhikaare chetasi) whose authoritative = commanding mind exists, (prakriti-liine) but which is totally involved in the Prakriti = Matter and its properties, (anubhavanti) enjoys (kaivalya-padam iva) like the state of salvation = freedom, (yaavat) as long as (chittam) their mind (na punaraavarttate) does not come back (adhikaara-vashaat iti) by the virtue of work still before it i.e. the work of providing fruits of vehicle of actions or salvation to the Soul.

Vedic Commentary in English :

Now after explaining two means, namely Practice and Desirelessnes, for achieving the Cognitive and Ultra-Cognitive trances, various other means to achieve these trances are prescribed. These trances take place by real knowledge of creation = universe (explained in this aphorism) and is termed as 'bhavapratyaya', and others are faith, energy, memory, trance and discernment (explained in next aphorism) and is termed as 'upaayapratyaya'.

This aphorism is having three terms namely - 'bhavapratyaya', 'videha' and 'prakritilaya'. Without understanding the meaning of three terms, the real meaning of this aphorism cannot be clear. There is very little available about the intellectuals named 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' in various testimonies / scriptures. Hence various explainators have described these terms in different ways. Bhoja is the next available intellectual available who wrote independent commentary on the aphorisms and discussed in details about these terms. Of the others Swami Brahmmuni is one who has discussed terms in more detail.

videha :- Who is videha? "vigatodeha.abhimaanaadi dehadharmo yasya sa videhaH" i.e. the person who is far away from the egoism and attachment of body and organs is called VidehaBhoja on this term in aphorism 1.17 had said - "When the yogi concentrate with the mind which have very little effect of Activity and Inertia Quality, then with the dominance of Illumination Quality, and mind being shining with the state of pleasure-ness, Soul experience the pleasure-ness state of the mind and this state is called Beatitude Cognitive Trance. And on attaining this trance he who becomes satisfied with state of pleasure-ness of mind and does not attempt to cognize the Soul and GOD, is known as 'videha' since his egoism and attachment towards body cease to exist."

Similarly other explainator Swami Brahmmuni had defined the term for the persons who reached the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance by being controlling the Egoism state of mind and are away from the ego and attachment of body and organs; and they concentrate on the knowledge that GOD is not having the properties / characteristics the Soul.

From both the explanations it is very clear that this devotee had not reached upto the state of cognizance of GOD and does not cognize the GOD.

prakritilaya :- Who is the intellectual termed as 'prakritilaya' ? As per Bhoja - "When the mind is not touched by the impurities of Activity and Inertia Qualities and concentration takes place with the mind with full of Illumination Quality, and the form of the mind remain unidentifiable, then Soul only remains as object for concentration i.e. all the other objects cease to exist as base of concentration, and this is called Egoism Cognitive Trance. The devotee, who becomes satisfied with this trance and does not cognize GOD and his mind being merging in its root cause Matter, is called as 'prakritilaya'.

As per Swami Brahmmuni those who have cognized the various subtle elements, egoism and conception of Pure-beness and Matter; and these objects now disappearing for concentration, and on restraining the root cause of this universe, have reached upto the state of  Ultra-cognitive Trance, they are called as 'prakritilaya'. These intellectuals practice for absence of properties of Matter in the form of GOD in Ultra-cognitive Trance.

So the 'prakritilaya' also does not reach up to the state of cognizance of GOD and does not cognize the GOD.

The explanations given by various explainators on 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' are different from each other. But we think that the explanation of Bhaja is more near to the conception of seer Vyaasa.

In the aphorism 1.15 seer Vyaasa said - "svarga-videha-prakritilyatva-praaptaa-vaanushravika viShaye vritriShNasya"  i.e. becoming thrust-less for scriptural enjoyments such as heaven and attainment of Videha and Prakritilaya states is called Desirelessness. So both the 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' states are scriptural objects. Having any wish to achieve these states or becoming satisfied on achieving these states is a obstruction for achieving salvation. Though he experiences like the state of salvation, but does not achieve salvation. So seer Vyaasa has used the term enjoying the state of something like salvation for both these categories of devotees. Such devotee, being having desire for such states, is away from Supreme Desirelessness which is the cause of achieving Ultra-cognitive Trance.

Seer Kapila also had denied for attainment of complete freedom for the 'prakritilaya'. A question was raised that though one has to go for next birth even on attaining the supreme birth in the present life, as this present birth being the result of vehicles of actions, and dependence on results (of vehicle of actions) is temporary; however on getting merged with the Matter, which is root cause of all material creations, may not result in next birth as merging in Matter may be treated as achievement of lap of mother. To answer this query he said —

na kaaraNalayaat kritakrityataa magnavat-uthaanaat. (Saankhya Philosopy 3.54)

Merging in the cause does not result in cessation of next birth; as someone who had gone in deep water of pond has to come out again, so those, who are deeply involved in the knowledge of Matter and get merged into it, do not achieve complete freedom and they have to come back for rebirths in the universe.

Similarly seer Vyaasa had said in aphorism 1.24 that "yathaa vaa prakritiliinasya-uttaraa bandhkotiH sambhaavyate" i.e. for the 'prakritiliina' the future state of bondage is possible since his mind had not fulfilled its duty of providing experience and salvation. So the 'prakritiliina' will have to come back again in the life-cycle. They are not treated at par with the Souls who have attained salvation. The conception is given in this aphorism by saying - "prakritilaya, whose authoritative mind exists, but is totally involved in the Matter and its properties, enjoys like the state of salvation, as long as their mind does not come back by the virtue of work still before it i.e. the work of providing fruits of impressions (= residual potencies) or salvation to the Soul."

The position and mental state of 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' are much better, superior, illuminating as compared to other bonded Souls; but the mind being authoritative they do not attain salvation. Their higher position is explained in aphorism 3.26 by seer Vyaasa as -

ta ete saptalokaaH sarva eva brahmalokaaH. videha-prakritilayaaH tu mokShapade vartante, na lokamadhye nyastaa iti.

It means that all the places are pervaded by Supreme Lord GOD. Intellectuals which are termed as videha and prakritilaya, however, having reached the state of quasi-freedom and remains out of the vicious cycle of birth and death for some time, so they are not placed in the state of phenomenal world = consecutive system of birth and death. Here all the living being are categorised according to the mental status and position of 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' is shown as superior. As per internal testimony of this scripture the meaning of 'mokShapade' is given as 'mokShapada-iva'. So the 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' remain away from the vicious life-cycle for some time; and what is that time period, that is known by GOD only.

bhava-pratyaya - The meaning of 'bhava' is universe and 'pratyaya' is mean. So when the mean of trance is knowledge of universe, that trance is known as 'bhavapratyaya' = i.e. brought about by the knowledge of objective existence. In this trance the knowledge of creation remains manifested in the mind of yogi. As per aphorism 1.17 all the products of Matter become base of concentration in Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances and he is able to cognize all these object upto the material cause of this universe. He now knows that whole universe is created from Matter and is destructible. So remaining of manifestation of this knowledge in the mind of yogi and trance achieved with this knowledge is called 'bhavapratyaya'.

videha intellectuals do obtain the knowledge of this Matter, but they have not achieved the cognizance of Soul and GOD till now. If the devotee consider this pleasure-full state of mind as his ultimate target (Beatitude Cognitive Trance) and becomes satisfied here only, then such yogi on account of his residual potencies, consider himself in better position, and being satisfied with this state of mind, experience the painless position in the mind. Such devotee remains away from the eternal life-cycle for some-time, on account of his mind with dominance of Illumination Quality, experience and enjoy the fruition of his own residual potencies, in the system administered by GOD, till these residual potencies remain un-fruited.

In the same way, when the yogi moves further after attaining Beatitude Cognitive Trance and obtain the real knowledge of Soul, then on having the experience of cognizance of Soul (= Egoism Cognitive Trance), consider himself in much better position as compared to the other intellectuals and yogis. In this Egoism Cognitive Trance, he cognizes the Soul but this cognizance is with the support of illuminating mind only and as such the mind remain authoritative and his functions do not end here. Such yogi, who becomes satisfied in this state of mind, is known as 'prakritilaya'. This yogi also, on having the cognizance of Matter and its products and thereafter cognizing the Soul, on becoming satisfied from such state of mind, considers that he has obtained all whatever was obtainable and enjoys like the state of salvation. He remains away from the eternal life-cycle as long as his mind, being remained authoritative, does not come back to provide experience and salvation to Soul.

It is to be understood that, as per the scriptures, for salvation one has to perform yogic practices in many lives, on basis of level of means adopted by him. In some cases the Yogi do become satisfied on attaining the state of 'videha' and 'prakritilaya' and do not perform yogic practice further; or they cannot perform further on account of death. Their yogic performance moves further in the coming lives by taking birth in the families of persons dominated by Illumination Qualities, on account of their residual potencies and vehicle of actions, as per the fruition system of GOD.

Most of the explainators have considered the 'bhava-pratyaya' and 'upaaya-pratyaya' as nouns and considered these as categories of Ultra-cognitive Trance. It is not proper to accept these as two types of Ultra-cognitive Trance. It is not proper to call the trance, achieved by  videha and prakritilaya, as Ultra-cognitive Trance. To accept a trance as Ultra-cognitive Trance the following properties / conditions are necessary —

1.         Ultra-cognitive Trance is possible on restraint of all the modifications. (Ref Vyaasa on aphorism 1.1 - 'sarvavritti-nirodhe tu asampraGYaata samaadhiH') And mind restrains the discriminative knowledge taken place in the dominance of Illumination Quality. (Ref Vyaasa on aphorism 1.2 - 'chitishaktiH-apariNaamini-apratisa.nkramaa darshitaviShayaa shuddhaa cha anantaa cha sattva-guNaatmikaa cheyamato vipriitaa vivekakhyaati iti. atastasyaam viraktam chittam taamapi khyaatim niruNadhi. tadavastham sa.nskaaropagam bhavati. sa nirbiijaH samaadhiH. na tatra ki~nchit sampraGYaayat iti asampraGYaataH.');

2.         The mean of Ultra-cognitive Trance is Supreme Desirelessness. (Ref Vyaasa on aphorism 1.18 - 'tasya param vairaagyam-upaayaH');

3.         In the Ultra-cognitive Trance residual potencies only remain. (Ref aphorism 1.18 - 'viraama-pratyaya-abhyaaspuurvaH sa.nskaarasheSho anyaH'); and

4.         In the Ultra-cognitive Trance by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness, the mind, having no object to grasp, becomes as it were non-existent. (Ref Vyaasa on aphorism 1.18 - 'tad-abhyaasa-puurvam chittam niraalambanamabhaava-praaptam-iva bhavati-iti-eSha nirbiijaH samaadhiH-asampraGYaataH').

Now we examine 'the trance taking place on the basis of knowledge of universe', with reference to above qualities of Ultra-cognitive Trance —

1.         In the trance of videha and prakritilaya devotees, the knowledge of universe exists in the mind, so this is not the state of restraint of all modifications. Further in case of videha's the cognizance of Soul and GOD do not take place and in case of prakritilaya's the cognizance of GOD does not take place. So in the absence of discriminative knowledge of Matter and Soul, there is no question of restraint of discriminative knowledge as such.

2.         As per aphorism 1.15 the states of videha and prakritilaya are considered as the scriptural enjoyments, so becoming thrust-less towards these is must for attaining the state of Desirelessness. So the devotees enjoying the states of videha and prakritilaya, on having thrust for these enjoyments, are not in the state of Desirelessness towards these. For such devotees, achievement of Supreme Desirelessness by becoming indifferent towards Qualities on having discriminative knowledge of Soul, cannot be accepted. Further seer Vyaasa had advised that Desirelessness is the highest perfection of complete discriminative knowledge of all the objects - Matter, Soul and GOD. The mere knowledge of universe alone is not accepted as highest perfection in the Vedic scriptures.

3.         In the Ultra-cognitive Trance the residual potencies only remain. In the explanation to this aphorism seer Vyaasa had said for experience the fruits of their residual potencies by videha with the functioning of mind, and prakritilaya also experience like salvation till their authoritative mind does not come back. Whereas in aphorism 1.18 seer Vyaasa had clearly said that - the Ultra-Cognitive Trance is that state of restrained mind, in which all its modifications cease from action i.e. restrained and their impressions = residual potencies only remain. Whereas in case of videha and prakritilaya the knowledge of universe exist in the mind, so all the modifications are not restrained and external objects are available for mind to grasp and function and hence both the states are not the states where residual potencies only remain.

4.         In the states of videha and prakritilaya, there exists the knowledge of universe in the mind, so the mind is having the objects to grasp and mind is performing actively. Therefore this practice is not object-less state of mind.

Further Bhoja in his explanation to this aphorism had clearly stated that - 'teShaam paratattva adarshanaat yogaabhaaso.ayam' i.e. since videha and prakritilaya do not cognize GOD, so their practice of Yoga is just like a glimpse only not the real Yoga. On account of internal testimony of yoga aphorisms, it is clear that trance of videha and prakritilaya is not an Ultra-cognitive Trance.

Some of the explainators had given the meaning of 'bhava' as ignorance, which is against the context. Trance = one-pointed state taking place in the dominance of ignorance is not accepted in the category of Yoga (Ref our explanation to aphorism 1.1). After restraining the ignorance, by Practice and Desirelessness, one is able to start performing the Yogic practice for meditation and concentration. Accepting the ignorance as base, after restraining the modifications, for achieving Cognitive Trance is against the principles laid down by seer Patanjali and seer Vyaasa.

Similarly some explainators have not accepted videha and prakritilaya as Yogi on the basis of preface of Vyaasa to this aphorism. Seer Vyaasa had stated - 'tatra upaaya-pratyayo yoginaam bhavati' i.e. of these, in case of Yogis, the trance is achieved by practice of means. On the basis of this, it is not proper to say that videha and prakritilaya are not performer of Yoga. In the first aphorism seer Vyaasa had said that the trance in the distracted state of mind does not falls under the category of Yoga. After that the one-pointed and restrained states were explained. After advising the means for restrain of modifications, and the Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive trances were explained, now seer Patanjali is advising other means for achieving these trances. videha and prakritilaya states are achieved in the higher states of Cognitive Trances namely Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances. Seer Vyaasa had written in his explanation to this aphorism - 'videhaanaam devaanaam bhavapratyayaH' i.e. videhas are accepted as intellectuals. Further for both of these intellectuals, there is experience like salvation. In the light of above position, not accepting the videha and prakritilaya devotees as performer of Yoga is against the logic and against the principles of seer Patanjali and Vyaasa. It is to be understood that both these states are achieved in the one-pointed state of mind only. The mind of such devotee is in such position where Activity and Inertia Qualities cease to exist and its modifications are dominated by the Illumination Quality. A person, without the dominance of Illuminating Quality or with operative Activity and Inertia Qualities, though being remain involved in the study of properties of Matter and its product and the Soul, but cannot achieve the states of videha and prakritilaya.

The question is why had seer Vyaasa used the word - 'yoginaam' for those who achieve the trance by the means advised in next aphorism? Here the word 'Yogi' is used for the devotees who perform the accessories of yoga with devotion and target to cognize the GOD i.e. to achieve the salvation. As per seer Patanjali 'yoga is restraint of modifications of mind' (aphorism 1.2) and its fruit is - 'In the restrained state of mind, the Soul exists in the conscious form of GOD' (aphorism 1.3). So the devotee who restrain the modifications of mind and target for existing in the form of GOD, are called Yogi. Even as per seer Vyaasa - 'without restrain of all the modifications of mind, the Soul cannot exist in his form'. So the devotee who does not target for cognizance of GOD, but restrain the modifications of Activity and Inertia Qualities and becomes dominated by the Illumination Quality and cognize the Matter and its products, they are known as 'videha' and the devotee who moves further and cognize the form of Soul in the highest Cognitive Trance is known as 'prakritilaya'. Since their target is not to reach up to the highest state of Yoga, so they are not called as 'Yogi'.

          यो वा एतदक्षरं गार्ग्यविदित्वाऽस्मिँल्लोके जुहोति यजते तपस्तप्यते बहूनि वर्षसहस्राण्यन्तवदेवास्य तद्भवति यो वा एतदक्षरं गार्ग्यविदित्वाऽस्माल्लोकात्प्रैति स कृपणोऽथ य एतदक्षरं गार्गि विदित्वाऽस्माल्लोकात्प्रैति स ब्राह्मणः॥ बृ॰ ३.८.१०॥

          अर्थात् हे गार्गि! जो अज्ञानी पुरुष इस अक्षर = ब्रह्म को न जानकर इस लोक में होम और यज्ञ करता है, अनेक सहस्र वर्ष  तप करता है उसका वह कर्म अन्तवत् अर्थात् विनश्वर = नाशवाला होता है। हे गार्गि् जो ही इस अक्षर = ब्रह्म को न जानकर इस लोक से चला जाता है वह कृपण है। और हे गार्गि! जो इस अक्षर = ब्रह्म को जानकर इस लोक से गमन करता है वही ब्राह्मण है॥ अर्थात् परमात्मा साक्षात्कार के बिना किए जाने वाले सभी यज्ञादि शुभ कर्म तथा समाधि आदि आन्तरिक कर्म अन्त वाले है, इस प्रकार के कर्मों से पुरुष मुक्ति को प्राप्त नहीं कर सकता।

          यहाँ यह समझना चाहिए कि शास्त्रों में स्पष्ट रूप से प्रतिपादित किया गया है कि  मुक्ति एक जन्म की साधना से नहीं होती, उसके लिए जन्म-जन्मान्तर की साधना की आवश्यकता होती है। अतः छान्दोग्य और बृहदाराण्यक उपनिषदों में वर्णित श्रेष्ठ लोकों की प्राप्ति को, महर्षि पतञ्जलि और महर्षि व्यास द्वारा विदेह और प्रकृतिलय देवों की गतियों का विस्तारपूर्वक वर्णन जानना चाहिए।  ऐसे साधक या तो इन अवस्थाओं को प्राप्त कर स्वयं ही सन्तुष्ट हो जाते है, और शेष जीवन में आगे नहीं बढ़ते;  या फिर इसी स्थिति को प्राप्त कर शरीरवियोग के कारण आगे की स्थितियों को सम्पादन नहीं कर पाते। इनकी आगे की साधना, अपने संस्कारों और कर्माशय के आधार पर, परमात्मा की व्यवस्था में, श्रेष्ठ कुलों में जन्म लेकर आगे बढ़ती है।

          बहुधा व्याख्याकारों ने भवप्रत्यय और उपायप्रत्यय को असम्प्रज्ञात समाधि के दो भेद माने हैं। वस्तुतः यहाँ “भवप्रत्यय” और “उपायप्रत्यय” दोनों ही संज्ञा शब्द नहीं है। इन्हें असम्प्रज्ञात समाधि के दो भेद मानना युक्तियुक्त नहीं है। भवप्रत्यय के द्वारा होने वाली विदेह और प्रकृतिलय देवों = विद्वानों की समाधि को असम्प्रज्ञात समाधि कहना उचित नहीं है। असम्प्रज्ञात समाधि के लिए निम्न विशेषताएँ, योग्यताएँ, आधार का होना आवश्यक है —

१.       असम्प्रज्ञात समाधि निरुद्धावस्था = सर्ववृत्तिनिरोध में ही सम्भव है (योगसूत्र १.१ पर व्यासभाष्य — “सर्ववृत्तिनिरोधे त्वसम्प्रज्ञात समाधिः”। तथा “चितिशक्तिरपरिणामिन्यप्रतिसंक्रमा दर्शितविषया शुद्धा चानन्ता च सत्त्वगुणात्मिका चेयमतो विपरीता विवेकख्यातिरिति। अतस्तस्यां विरक्तं चित्तं तामपि ख्यातिं निरुणद्धि। तदवस्थं संस्कारोपगं भवति। स निर्बीजः समाधिः। न तत्र किञ्चित्संप्रज्ञायत इत्यसंप्रज्ञातः।” योग० १.२ पर व्यासभाष्य);
