In English:
Preface to Sutra in English : vij~naatavaachyavaachakatvasya yoginaH —

Meaning in English : (yoginaH) The yogi, (vij~naata-vaachya-vaachaka-tvasya) who has come to know the eternal relation between the word "AUM" and "GOD" is to—

Sutra in English : tajjapastadarthabhaavanam.28.

Meaning in English :

(tat-japaH) Repeat the word "AUM" and (tadartha-bhaavanam) to ponder over its meaning i.e. he must understand the properties and conscious form of GOD.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

The yogi must repeat this name and always ponder on its meaning, so that his mind become stable by achieving concentration, Illumination and pleasing-ness; with the result his heart = mind is full of light of GOD and his devotion to GOD is always increasing (Rigvedaadi-bhaashyabhuumikaa - On Worship).

The Yogi must repeat this i.e. constantly repeat it in mind and meditate GOD which is its meaning (Hugli Debate).

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

praNavasya japaH praNavaabhidheyasya cheshvarasya bhaavanam. tadasya yoginaH praNava.m japataH praNavaartha.m cha bhaavayatashchittamekaagra.m sampadyate. tathaa choktam—

svaadhyaayaadyogamaasiita yogaatsvaadhyaayamaasate.

svaadhyaayayogasampattyaa  paramaatmaa   prakaashate. iti.

Meaning In English :

Yogi is (japaH) to repeat (praNavasya) the word "AUM" (cha) and (bhaavanam) meditate (iishvarasya) GOD who is (praNava-abhidheyasya) signified by the word "AUM". (tat) This way (chittam) the mind (asya yoginaH) of this yogi (praNavam japataH) by constantly repeating the word "AUM" (cha) and (bhaavayataH) meditating the (praNavaartham) meaning of the Supreme Soul GOD, who is signified by the word "AUM", (sampadyate) becomes (ekaagram) concentrated = one-pointed. (tathaa cha uktam) And so it has been said that —

(yogam aasiita) Let the yoga be practiced (svaadhyaayaat) through study of Vedas and repetition of "AUM" and (svaadhyaayam) meaning of Vedas and "AUM" be (aasate) effected (yogaat) through Yoga. So (svaadhyaaya-yoga-sampattyaa) by the properties of study of Vedas and Yoga (pramaatmaa-prakaashate iti) one obtains the vision of Supreme Soul GOD.

Vedic Commentary in English :

Seer Patanjali, in aphorism 1.23, had advised devotion to GOD as an important mean to achieve the trance at the earliest. After advising this mean, he had established the existence of a distinct conscious Soul GOD who is creator of this universe. HE alone is omniscient and first teacher of human beings and HIS signifier is said as 'AUM'. Now seer Patanjali is advising to repeat His name 'AUM' and ponder over its meaning. By such pondering the devotee gains the knowledge of GOD, after that he can be fully devoted to GOD and can fully surrender himself to GOD. To attain the devotion to GOD, it is important to understand the real form of the GOD and in order to understand the form of GOD, it is important to ponder on the form of the GOD as advised in Vedic scriptures. By this devotee is not only able to restrain his modifications, but also achieve the state of Supreme Desirelessness.

In this aphorism there is advise of repeating the name 'AUM' and ponder over its meaning. By mere repeating the word 'AUM' will not result in desired results, since there is also an advise of meditating on the form of GOD. We must understand the terms - "repetition" and "pondering on the meaning".

Repetition — It means to repeat a particular word or group of words either orally or mentally. So here repetition of 'AUM' means repeating the word 'AUM' orally or in mind continuously. This repetition should be performed for a long time, continuously, with purificatory acts, continence, knowledge and faith (aphorism 1.14). In the beginning the devotee normally practices to repeat the word orally, after that this repetition is done in mind alone.

Pondering over Meaning — Along with the repetition, the devotee should also ponder over its meaning, otherwise mere repetition will not result in desired way. Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote - "He who praises God like a flunkey, but does not reform his character does himself no good" (Light of Truth - Chapter 7). In the same way mere repetition without pondering over the form of GOD cannot be termed as worship of GOD.

So for the worship of GOD, both repetition and pondering are important. Now what is pondering ? - "To accept an object in its real form, to understand the object as it is, so that the mental conception is without illusion and nescience." And reverse of this is misconception. So meditating on the real form, properties, acts and nature of GOD will be termed as conception = pondering over the form of the GOD; and by meditating otherwise, the devotee will be grasped by ignorance and thereby will remain far from GOD in terms of knowledge.

In this regard Swami Dayanand Saraswati also wrote that mere repetition of name is useless. "Merely taking the name of God is of no use; as the repetition of the word sugar does not give a sweet taste to the mouth, nor does the repetition of the word Neem (Melia azdiracta) imparts a bitter taste to the palate. The sensations of the sweetness and bitterness are produced only when sweet and bitter substances are brought in contact with the tongue.... Question - Please tell us what is the Vedic mode of taking the name of the Lord? Answer - Taking / remembering the name is to be done in the following way — take for instance the name nyayakari (Just) which is one of the many names. Contemplate what it connotes. As God dispenses justice to all and is free from the least taint of partiality, so should you conform your conduct to the requirements of justice and always refrain from doing anything unjust. The contemplation of even one name of the Deity in this way conduces to one’s spiritual welfare" (Light of Truth Chapter 11). He further wrote in this chapter that “Taking the name of the Great God consists in performing great works of righteousness. God is called by hundred different names (such as Brahma, Parameshwara, Ishwara, Niyaayakari, Dayalu, Sarvasshaktimaan, etc.) by virtue of possessing manifold nature, attributes and characteristics. He is called brahma because He is the greatest of all. parameshwara (Great God) because He is the Lord of the powerful, iishwara because He is Almighty, niyaayakaari (Just) because He is Just, never unjust, dayaalu (Merciful) because He is Merciful to all, sarva-shaktimaan (Omnipotent) because He creates and sustains the world and resolves it into its elementary condition by His power alone and does not need the help of another being. He is called vishnu because He pervades all and protects all. He is called mahaadeva because He is the Lord of all devaa = all material and spiritual objects that possess brilliant or useful properties as well as sages, seers and wise men. He is called rudra because He is the cause of the dissolution of the world. Let a man, therefore, try to imbibe His virtues (i.e. to be like God in nature and attributes, etc.). Thus let him be great by the performance of great works. Let him be powerful among the powerful. Let him augment his power. Let him never commit a sinful act. Let him be kind to all. Let him perfect his means of progress. Let him develop technical arts and with their help, make different kinds of things. Let him do unto others as he would be done by. Let him protect all. Let him be learned amongst the learned. Let him diligently punish the wicked and protect the good. In short, moulding one’s nature, attributes and character in accordance with those of God alone constitutes the true method of taking His name" (Light of Truth Chapter 11).

At the time of worship, while repeating 'AUM' the devotee should also know the conscious form, omnipresence of GOD, and also during the worldly affairs accept, believe and act according to the properties, acts, nature of GOD is known as pondering on the GOD. As he must accept and feel that GOD is of conscious form; GOD is existing, conscious, and blissful; GOD is protector; GOD is formless; GOD is omnipotent; GOD is omnipresent; GOD is true Judge; GOD never take birth; GOD is pure; GOD is fruit-giver of our acts; GOD is creator of this whole world; GOD wish our well-being; GOD is merciful; GOD is advisor of his knowledge in form of Vedas; GOD cannot be seen, but sees all; GOD cannot be cognized by sense organs i.e. viewed through eyes etc.; GOD has no visible form; etc. Understanding and pondering on the form of GOD is to accept the properties explained in last 4 aphorisms, and as explained in Vedic scriptures. It is not only to accept the form and properties of GOD, in true form, but it is most important to accept the properties and form of GOD accordingly and apply those during the time of worship as well as worldly affairs. As the GOD is omnipresent and justice-doer, so to accept HIM in the same way and remain away from all types of sins = vices. Devotee must understand that GOD knows all my mental, oral and physical acts, as it is. He must have belief that I always exist within the GOD; I was never outside the purview and existence of GOD and can never be outside the omnipresent GOD; and GOD is even present within me i.e. I am pervaded by the GOD in all respects. In this way devotee will be able to restrain his modifications and attain the steadiness of mind and ultimately become desireless even towards the Qualities of Illumination etc.

By practicing in this way, not only the mind of the yogi becomes steady, but also he is able to understand the glory of GOD. In the beginning, it is not possible to have repetition and meditation on the form of GOD simultaneously, so he should repeat the word 'AUM' first and then meditate on the form of GOD signified by 'AUM'. By the continuous practice of this, yogi becomes able to repeat the word 'AUM' in mind and keep meditating on the form of the GOD simultaneously.

Yamaacharya advised Nachiketa for the worship of 'AUM' in Katha-UpaniShada, as follows -

etaddhyevaakSharam brahm etadevaakSharam param. etaddhyevaakSharam GYaatvaa yo yad-ichchaati tasya tat.

etadaalambanam-shreShTham-etadaalambanam param. etadaalambanam GYaatvaa brahmaloke mahiiyate. Katha-UpaniShada 2.16-17.

i.e. AUM is the eternal,            omnipresent GOD and it only signifies GOD. This is the best word as a signifier of GOD, none other is better than this. By knowing this eternal GOD, the devotee achieves all the worldly and scriptural pleasures whichever he wants in this world. This is the best mean for worship of GOD, in order to cognize HIM, and this is the only way to achieve the pleasure of salvation. By the worship of this, yogi achieves the pleasure and bliss of GOD after getting rid of all types of bondages.

See, 'AUM' is the word to signify GOD, 'AUM' is the signified GOD and 'AUM' is the knowledge. Since the 'AUM' alone is used for the word, meaning and knowledge of GOD, so whatever is "word", that is "meaning", and whatever is "meaning", that is "knowledge", and whatever is "knowledge", that is "meaning and word"; in this way by the one word 'AUM' one should meditate for oneness in terms of the signifying word, meaning and knowledge of GOD. Hence mere repetition of word 'AUM' alone is not fruitful, so yogi should have full knowledge of GOD and his form.

In the higher state of trance, the repetition of word 'AUM' becomes secondary, and meditation of form of GOD remains as primary objective. As in case of Indistinct Argumentative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances the "word" and "knowledge" of the object becomes secondary, and "form of the object" becomes primary for the meditation (Ref aphorism 1.43 and 1.44). Even while defining the trance, seer Patanjali said - "tadeva-arthamaatra-nirbhaasam svaruupashuunyam-iva samaadhiH" (Aphorism 3.3) i.e. trance is cognizance of real form of the object alone and becoming devoid of its own form. So cognizance of form of GOD primarily, and yogi becoming devoid of his own form i.e. not cognizing his form, is achievement of trance. In this way when the repetition of GOD's signifier 'AUM' is left behind and yogi is only cognizing and experiencing the form of GOD alone is the success of trance. In this state yogi achieves the state of Supreme Desirelessness i.e. he does not have any thirst or attachment towards the Qualities of Illumination etc.

Seer Vyaasa had stressed for the performance of Yoga and study of Vedas for obtaining the vision of GOD. Yogi has first to obtain the knowledge of various objects by the study of Vedas and then meditate on that knowledge by becoming concentrated = one-pointed in the state of trance; and in this way he cognizes the objects whose knowledge was obtained from the study of Vedas. In this way he should increase his practical knowledge by study of Vedas and performance of trance. In the beginning he should start from the gross objects, then moving on to the subtle objects and Matter; and then lastly he will be able achieve the knowledge of Soul and GOD. This fact has been established by seer Patanjali by the words 'tataH pratyakchetana-adhigamaH' in the next aphorism.
