Preface to Sutra in English :

Meaning in English :

Sutra in English : viitaraagaviShaya.m vaa chittam.37.

Meaning in English :

(vaa) Or (viitaraaga chittam) the desireless state of mind (viShayam) for its objects, causes the steadiness of mind.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

viitaraagachittaalambanoparakta.m vaa yoginashchitta.m sthitipada.m labhata iti.

Meaning In English :

(vaa) Or (viita-raaga-chittaalambano-parktam) concentrating upon the desireless state of mind for its objects (labhate) causes the (sthiti-padam) steadiness of (chittam) mind (yoginaH iti) of the Yogi.

Vedic Commentary in English :

Another mean for achieving steadiness of mind is concentrating on the desireless state of mind. It means that whose mind has become desireless, by concentrating on such mind, Yogi achieves the steadiness of mind. The 'desireless state for its objects' is meant for - 'the state of mind whose desire is ceased' i.e. who have no desire for the worldly objects or objects made of 'Qualities', or mind is not having any attachment towards the worldly objects / experiences, and concentrating on such desireless mind causes its steadiness. It is worth noting that in such mind afflictions in the form of nescience etc. do not exist.

In the commentary of aphorism 1.11, seer Vyaasa had said - 'sarvaaH-chaitaa vrittayaH sukha-duHkha-mohaatmikaaH' i.e. all the modifications are of the nature of pleasure, pain and illusion. Desire follows the pleasure. Pain is also related to the desire; since on having desire towards some objects, and on not being able to obtain those objects, pain is caused which is on account above desire only. In the same way, desire is also an one of the causes of illusion; since one gets illuted towards the material objects, relatives and other social person on account of desire = attachment only. So desire = attachment is related to all type of modifications in one or other way. By accomplishing the desireless state of mind, steadiness of mind is possible.

In order to become desireless towards the worldly objects, seer Manu had advised as follows —

            avekSheta gatiirnriNaam karmadoSha-samudbhavaaH.

niraye chaiva patanam yaatanaaH cha yamakShaye.

            viprayogam priyaiH-chaiva sa.nyogam cha tathaa.apriyaiH.

            jarayaa chaabhibhavanam vyaadhibhiH-chopapiidanam.

            dehaat-utkramaNam chaasmaat-punaH-garbhe cha sambhavam.

            yonikoTisahasreShu sritiishchaasyantaraatmanaH. Manusrmiti 6.61-63.

In means that one should think = contemplate for experiencing pains and achieving the unwanted life-states of animals etc. on account of defects of actions performed by human beings, and thinks about pain caused at the time of death; so one should perform for achieving salvation. And think about the separation from person, whom one loves, and meeting with the enemies which causes pains, getting effected by the old age and diseases, moving away from the present body on account of death and staying the womb of mother for the next life-state, moving in various types on unwanted life-states on account of fruition of one's vehicle of actions; and in order to avoid such pains one should concentrate in mind for achieving salvation.

In fact one keeps on moving in the life-death-life cycle of the world, on being grasped by the afflictive modification-residual potency-modification cycle which is caused by the existence of afflictions in the form nescience etc., primarily on account of attachment and aversion, in one's acts. So on seeing the defects and pains as above, one can become desireless towards the worldly affairs and involvements.

For the performing concentration of mind, Giita also advised for desirelessness —

            raaga-dveSha-viyuktaiH-tu viShayaanindriyaishcharan.

            aatma-vashyaiH-vidheyaatmaa prasaadam-adhigachchhati. Giita 2.64.

i.e. a well controlled person, experiencing the objects with the organs which are under his control and devoid of attachement and aversion, accomplish the purity and steadiness of mind.

Some of the commentators, in the commentary to this aphorism, had advised for the meditation on the minds of some desireless seers = Yogis of earlier times like seer Vyaasa, Dattatreya etc. in order to achieve the steadiness of mind. The basic intention behind is - as those people became absolutely free by adopting desirelessness, so we must perform in the same way. But such type of indication is not there in the Vyaasa commentary. This was firstly indicated by Vaachaspati Misra in his commentary. And on the basis of that the commentators of present time had advised so. It is not possible, for meditation, to make the base of minds of seers of earlier times on the following grounds —

1.         Seer Patanjali had advised the attainment of knowledge of others' mind in 3.19 as - "pratyayasya parachitta-GYaanam". So by performing Sanyama over the knowledge / modification of others' mind, yogi gets the knowledge of others' mind. There is no mention of knowledge of minds of seers of earlier times. Further in the next aphorism it is said - "na cha tat-saalambanam tasya-aviShayii bhuutatvaat" (3.20) which means that the knowledge of others mind is not along with its objects, since that object of modification in other's mind, is not the subject of Sanyama for this yogi. From this it is clear that by Sanyama over the knowledge of other's mind, yogi gets the knowledge of other's mind, but he do not know the subject / object of that knowledge basing on which such knowledge = modification is manifested in other's mind.

2.         There are two possibilities for the seers of earlier times, i.e. either they got salvation and with the result their minds also got merged into the Matter on achieving the salvation; or they are still in the life-cycle, then their minds, being the part of their subtle bodies, will be along with them only. It means wherever that Soul is existing in the universe, as the fruition system of Supreme Soul GOD, his mind will also be present there only. So it is not possible for any person to know where is that Soul and his desireless mind existing in this universe. So in both the cases the meditation on the mind of such desireless seers is not possible.

But, it is possible to know the characters of such desireless seers, then change and develop our mind according to that knowledge and achieve steadiness of mind. One can achieve the steadiness of mind by performing according to such desireless yogis of the present times, and as per Vedic scriptures, becoming desireless for the worldly affairs, seeing the defects of worldly enjoyments (as per Manusmriti 6.61-63 above), and making one's mind totally desireless towards the material world and material enjoyments. No one can achieve the steadiness of mind without adopting desireless towards the material enjoyments in his life.
