Sutra in English : tatra shabdaarthaj~naanavikalpaiH sa~NkiirNaa savitarkaa samaapattiH.42.

Meaning in English :

(tatra) There (samaapattiH) the cognitive trance, in which (shabdaartha-j~naana-vikalpaiH) the options of word, object and its knowledge are (sa~NkiirNaa) mixed up, is called (savitarkaa) indistinct.

Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss :

Vyaasa Commentary in English :

Meaning In English :

(tadyathaa) And that as follows — (gauH iti) the "Cow" (shabdaH) is a word i.e. spoken with combination of throat, tongue and palate and heard as a sound through ears; (gauH iti) the "Cow" (arthaH) is the object i.e. the physical body of the animal = cow; and (gauH iti) the "Cow" (j~naanam) is the knowledge i.e. the mental modification with regard to the object cow, are (vibhaktaanaam api) although different from one-another in their properties, (driShTam) yet it is seen that (avibhaagena grahaNam iti) these three are cognized as indistinct.

(cha) And on being analysed (vibhajyamaanaaH) the three are different in nature, since (shabda-dharmaaH) the characteristics = properties of word are (anye) different; and (artha-dharmaaH anye) the properties of object are different; and (j~naana-dharmaaH anye) the properties of its knowledge are different; (iti) so (eteShaam panthaaH) their line of existence (vibhaktaH) are distinct.

(tatra) There (gavaadi arthaH) the various objects such as cow etc, (yaH) which are (samaaruuDhaH) present (samaadhi-praj~naayaam) in the trance-consciousness state of (yoginaH) Yogi who (samaapannasya) has achieved the state of trance, (saH chet) if that object (upaavarttate) is cognized (shabda-artha-j~naana-vikalpaanuviddhaH) through the indeterminate notions of word, object = meaning and knowledge, then (saa) that (samaapattiH) cognitive trance named as philosophical argumentation is (sa~NkiirNaaH) mixed up and (uchyate) called as (savitarkaH) "Indistinct".

Vedic Commentary in English :

In the Argumentative Cognitive Trance, gross objects are cognized. Its first type is known as indistinct. In the Indistinct Cognitive Trance, the cognizance of the object is mixed up with the options of word, object and its knowledge i.e. these three are not distinctly cognized. The mixing up of the three are explained by seer Vyaasa by the example of 'Cow' as below —

'Cow' - a word — Cow is a word spoken through the mouth (with the throat, tongue and palate etc.) and is a sound which is cognized by the ear. The properties of the word are -spoken with different stresses, through mouth and its hearing as sound through ears.

'Cow' - an object = the meaning — Cow is an object with the physical body of animal having particular properties like color, form, size, inanimateness etc.

'Cow' - the knowledge — The knowledge of cow is the modification of mind about the object named as 'cow'. Its properties are manifestation of object which takes place on having contact of organ with the object.

For an object, the "word" is different from the "object" and its "knowledge"; "object" is different from the "word" and its "knowledge"; and its "knowledge" is different from the "word" and the "object". But in the normal course of life, these three, though different from one-another, are used as inter-mixed. Not only the word, object and knowledge are different, but their properties, as shown above, are also different from one-another. So the perception of the three as one is an imagination. When somebody says 'Cow' then the hearer of word also perceives the object 'cow' and its knowledge, even though the cow may not be physically available there. Similarly on seeing the object 'cow', the word 'cow' and its knowledge manifests in the mind. And on having the memory of 'cow', the word 'cow' and the physical body of 'cow' is also perceived. Though these three are not one, yet by the word 'cow' the other two automatically follows it, so it is an imagination, i.e. manifestation of other two on the perception of one of these, is experience of mixed up combination of three, and it is imagination.

The state of trance, in which the devotee is cognizing the gross 'object' along with its word = 'indicative name' and its knowledge i.e. mixed up knowledge of these three is cognized, is called as Indistinct Argumentative Cognitive Trance. The cognizance of object is primary target in the trance (Ref aphorism 3.3 - tadeva-arthamaatra-nirbhaasam svaruupashuunyam-iva samaadhiH), but in the initial stage the indicative word and its knowledge is also available for cognizance along with the object. In fact in the process of Four-steps Realisation method of knowledge (Ref our commentary on the previous aphorism), the devotee first obtain the word-knowledge of the object by hearing and / or study; then by 'logical thinking' on this heard / studied information a proper knowledge of the object takes place; and then the devotee adopts the process of meditation and cognizance in order to cognize the object. This cognizance of object is the ultimate target which is achieved by way of trance. The gross objects are the base of concentration in the Argumentative Cognitive Trance, and its first classification is 'Indistinct' where the cognizance of the mixed up knowledge of 'word', 'object' and 'knowledge' takes place.

The gross objects which are made as base of concentration, as explained in aphorism 1.17, are - five gross objects (= Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Sky), five sense organs, five work organs and the mind, i.e. all the 16 objects which are last in the creation process. Seer Vyaasa had taken the example of 'cow' whose body is created from the gross objects, and perceivable through the organs. The logics and testimony for accepting these 16 objects in the 'gross' category are given in aphorism 1.17.
