Sutra in English : suukShmaviShayatva.m chaa.a.ali~Ngaparyavasaanam.45.

Meaning in English :

(cha) And (suukShma-viShayatvam) the province of subtle elements / objects (paryavasaanaam) reaches up to (ali~NgaH) Nature = Matter.

Meaning In English :

(suukShmaH viShayaH) The subtle element (paarthivasya aNoH) of atoms of earthly class = earth is (gandha-tanmaatram) the odoriferous ether; (aapyasya) the subtle elements of liquid atom is (rasa-tanmaatram) the gustiferous ether; (taijasasya) the subtle elements of fiery atom is (ruupa-tanmaatram) lumniferous ether; (vaayaviiyasya) the subtle element of gaseous atom is (sparsha-tanmaatram) the tangiferous ether; and (aakaashasya) the subtle element of spacious atom is (shabda-tanmaatram iti) the soniferous ether. (teShaam) The subtle element = cause of these five ethers is (aha~NkaaraH) the conception of individuality = Pure-egoism. (suukShmaH viShayaH) The subtle cause of (asya api) the concept of individuality  = Pure-egoism is (li~Nga-maatram) Pure-Beness = Phenomenal Objective Existence. (suukShma-viShayaH) The principle subtler (li~Ngamaatrasya api) of this = Pure-Beness too is (ali~Ngam) the Matter. (cha) And (na asti) there is nothing (param suukShmam) more subtler than (ali~Ngaat) the Matter.

(nanu) The question is raised that (asti puruShaH suukShma iti) since the Soul = GOD is more subtler than the Matter, then why it is said that there is nothing subtler than Matter ? (satyam) Yes, the Soul is more subtle than the Matter, but (yathaa) as (saukShmyam) the subtlety (ali~Ngasya) of the Matter is (param) more than (li~Ngaat) the Pure Phenomenal Existence = Pure-Beness, (evam) such subtlety (na cha) is not (puruShasya) of the Soul. (kintu) Since (puruShaH) the soul = GOD (na bhavati) is not (anvayikaaraNam) the material cause (li~Ngasya) of the Pure Phenomenal Existence,  (tu) on the other hand (bhavati) it is (hetuH iti) only instrumental cause. (ataH) For this reason (saukShmyam) the subtlety of (pradhaane) the Matter (vyaakhyaatam) is described as (niratishayam) not liable to be exceeded.

Vedic Commentary in English :

The Meditative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance take place on the basis of subtle elements / objects. Now what are these subtle elements and what is limit of their province?  Seer Patanjali said that the province of the subtle elements is up to Matter which is the root material-cause of the creation. Seer Vyaasa had named these subtle elements in his commentary.

The subtle elements of gross objects (earth, water, fire, air and sky) are the five ethers — odoriferous, gustiferous, lumniferous, tangiferous and soniferous ethers respectively. Subtle element of these five ethers is Pure-egoism which is said as Conception of Individuality; subtle element of Pure-egoism is Pure-beness and subtle element of Pure-beness is Matter which is equilibrium state of three Qualities. In this way these are eight subtle elements in number. Matter, not being the products of any other element, is said as subtlest element. But Pure-beness, Pure-egoism, ethers are the work products of their respective previous element and are the material-cause of their next products in sequence. This classification is as per Saankhya Philisophy (1.61) given by seer Kapila. Matter is said as subtlest in this sequence.

On the other hand GOD is said as more subtle than the Matter in various scriptures, as—

indriyebhyaH paraa hi-arthaa arthebhyaH cha param manaH.

manasaH tu paraa buddhiH-buddheH-aatmaa mahaan paraH.

            mahataH parama-vyaktamavyaktaat puruShaH paraH.

                                                                                    (Katha-UpaniShada 3.10-11)

The subjects of sense-organs are certainly subtle than the organs; and the mind is more subtle than these five subjects, and the decision state of mind = brain (buddhi in vedic literature) is more subtle than the modification stage of mind (known as mana in vedic literature); the Pure-beness  is subtler than the decision state of mind. The Matter (= the equilibrium state of Qualities) is more subtle than the pure-beness; and Soul (the conscious object) = GOD is more subtle than the Matter; and nothing else is subtle than the GOD. GOD is the subtlest object, this is the highest degree of subtleness.

In the light of the above testimony it is said that - 'nothing is subtle than the Matter' is not correct, since GOD is said as more subtle than the Matter. In this regard seer Vyaasa said that subtlety of the Matter is with regard to material-cause. As the various products i.e. Pure-beness, Egoism etc. are created from the Matter, the same is not the case with regard to the Soul. GOD is the instrumental-cause of this universe, not the material-cause. For the cause and work sequence, Matter is the subtlest object than all other products and having the characteristics of changeability. On the other hand GOD, being the subtlest of all, is not changeable, and the Universe is not made from the form of GOD. So the root-cause of all the work-products is Matter, not the GOD. GOD is the creator and controller of Universe.

So the basis of concentration for the Meditative Cognitive Trance are the subtle objects which are eight in number starting from five ethers to Matter. It should be understood here that the sense and work organs are not included in subtle objects; and in the testimony of Katha-UpaniShada, as given above, objects of sense organs are said as subtle than the organs.
