Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : The six schools of philosophy namely — Mimaansaa, VaisheShika, Nyaya, Yoga, Saankhya and Vedanta, written by Vedic Seers and saints, are called ‘Upaang = Sub-limbs of Vedas’.
Comment in English : Notes —
1. Mimaansaa — (also called ‘Puurva-Mimaansaa’) is a school that focuses on the exegesis of the Vedas, philology, and the interpretation of the Vedic rituals, written by Seer Jaimini.
2. VaisheShika — closely related to the Nyāya school, this school focused on the metaphysics of substance, and the theory of atoms, written by Seer KaNaada.
3. Nyaaya — this school focuses on logic and epistemology. It accepts six kinds of evidence : (1) perception, (2) inference, (3) comparison and analogy, (4) postulation, derivation from circumstances, (5) non-perception, negative/cognitive proof, and (6) word testimony of past or present reliable experts. This school defends a form of direct realism and a theory of substances (dravya), written by Saint Gautam.
4. Yog — the theistic school of Patanjali, which assumes the metaphysics of Saankhya, focuses on Yogic Practice. It explains the path of cognition of self, GOD, and achievement of salvation.
5. Saankhya — a philosophical tradition that describes the universe as consisting of two independent realities: Purusha (= two – the Supreme Soul (one), and Souls (innumerable)) and Prakṛiti (= combination of three qualities of illumination, activity, and inertia, an inanimate object, which is the material cause of the universe), written by Seer Kapila.
6. Vedaanta — (also called Uttara Mimaansaa), focuses on interpreting the philosophy of the Upanishads, particularly the soteriological and metaphysical ideas relating to the Supreme Soul, written by Seer Vyaasa.
