Component Word : abhaava pratyaya aalambanaa vRRittiH nidraa.
Sutra in English : abhaavapratyayaalambanaa vRRittirnidraa.10.
Meaning in English : (nidraa) Sleep is (vrittiH) mental modification = activity which (aalambanaa) has for its objective substratum (abhaava-pratyaya) non-knowledge of activities = modifications relating to the state of dream and awakening.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : The fourth - sleep is the mental modification which is in the state of nescience and ignorance. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa on Worship).
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : saa cha samprabodhe pratyavamarshaat pratyayavisheShaH. kathama sukhamahamasvaapsam. prasanna.m me manaH praj~naa.m me vishaaradiikaroti. duHkhamahamasvaapsa.m styaana.m me mano bhramatyanavasthitam. gaaDha.m muuDho.ahamasvaapsam. guruuNi me gaatraaNi. klaanta.m me chittam. alasa.m muShitamiva tiShThatiiti. sa khalvaya.m prabuddhasya pratyavamarsho na syaadasati pratyayaanubhave. tadaashritaaH smRRitayashcha tadviShayaa na syuH. tasmaat pratyayavisheSho nidraa. saa cha samaadhaavitarapratyayavanniroddhavyeti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (cha) And (saa samprabodhe) on awakening from sleep, (pratyavamarshaat) because of memory, (pratyaya-visheShaH) a type of knowledge = experience exists. (katham) Which type of knowledge = experience? (aham) I (sukham asvaapsam) slept comfortably, because (me manaH) my mind is (prasannam) happy, and (praGYaam me vishaaradii-karoti) rendering my intellect bright; or (aham) I (duHkham asvaapsam) slept distressingly, since (me manaH) my mind is (styaanam) slack = sluggish and (bhramati-anavasthitam) is wandering and unsteady; (aham) I (asvaapsam) slept in (gaaDham muuDhaH) great stupidity, since (me gaatraaNi) my limbs are (guruuNi) heavy, (me chittam) my mind is (klaantam) tired, (alasam) lazy and (muShitam iva tiShThati iti) stands as it is absent.
(pratyaya-anubhave asati) If sleep is not recognized as a mental modification, then (pratyavamarsho) this type of calling back (na syaat) would certainly not exist in a person. (cha) And (sa khalu ayam prabuddhasya) on awakening for him, (smritayaH na syuH) there would be no memories (tadaashritaaH) dependent thereupon i.e., the state of sleep, and (tad-viShayaa) having that for their object. (tasmaat) Therefore (nidraa) sleep is (pratyaya-visheSho) a particular type of knowledge = mental activity. (saa cha) And this activity (niroddhavya) is to be checked (samaadhau) in trance (itara pratyayavat iti) like any other type of mental modification = activity.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the case of perception, the object is cognized in its real form; and in the case of perversion object is cognized otherwise; in the case of imagination is the knowledge without the existence of an object. On the other hand, in the case of sleep, the knowledge is more peculiar than the above three types of modifications, its base being the non-knowledge and hence treated as a separate modification. In sleep, the dominance is of Inertia property, so it is also, said as deep sleep (= suShupti in Sanskrit literature). At the time of awakening the working organs, sense organs, and mind are active. At the time of dreams working organs and sense organs are inactive and the mind is active which results in dreams. At the time of deep sleep, even the mind also, becomes inactive along with all other organs. So, the experiences of organs and mind are not available during the period of sleep. So, the absence of knowledge is also, a type of knowledge that takes place during sleep.
To understand the meaning of this aphorism, let us understand the real form of sleep as given in the scriptures. Seer of upaniShada defines it as - "yatra supto na ka.nchana kaamam kaamayate na ka.nchana svapnam pashyati tat suShuptam" (Maandukya-upaniShada 5) i.e., where a sleeping person does not wish any subject nor sees any dream or experience any mental thinking, is called the state of deep sleep. Thus, in this state, the person is totally unrelated to worldly objects and is dreamless.
Seer Kapila had declared the similarity of sleep with trance and salvation on account of the experience of a painless state and GOD by saying - "samaadhi-suShupti-mokSheShu brahmaruupataa" (Saankhya 5.116). Here someone can say that on account of the absence of worldly pleasure-pain in the state of sleep, it is not to be treated as a mental modification. To remove any such suspicion Seer Patanjali had used the word modification in the aphorism itself, and Seer Vyaasa had clearly advised restraining the sleep also, along with other modifications. The reason for such advice is that in the state of sleep, Inertia Quality is dominant since qualities of Illumination and Activity are suppressed.
As in the case of cognitive trance the modifications of Activity and Inertia are restrained and in the case of ultra-cognitive trance all the modifications are restrained and there is no question of the existence of worldly modifications in the case of salvation, so, is not the position in case of sleep since on awakening there is a memory of a type of experience and/or knowledge. These are the types of experiences during the sleep —
1. When during sleep the Activity Quality is suppressed and the Illuminating Quality is little active, then on awakening the person says that I slept comfortably since my mind is happy and rendering my intellect bright. (This sleep is known as 'with the dominance of Illumination Quality');
2. When during sleep the Illuminating Quality is suppressed and the Activity Quality is a little active then on awakening the person says that I slept distressfully since my mind is slack = sluggish and is wandering and unsteady. (This sleep is known as 'with the dominance of Activity Quality');
3. When during sleep both the Activity and Illuminating Qualities are suppressed and there is the total dominance of Inertia Quality then on awakening the person says that I slept in great stupidity since my limbs are heavy, my mind is tired, lazy, and stands at it is absent. (This sleep is known as 'with the dominance of Inertia Quality').
Now if sleep is not accepted as mental modification, then there should not be such types of memories on awakening, since any type of memory cannot be there without experience. If the experience of its form and non-knowledge in sleep is not accepted as a modification, then such memories cannot be accepted during awakening. So, this memory, which cannot be there without experience, proves sleep is a mental modification.
On ascertaining sleep as a mental modification, its restrain is specifically prescribed, to achieve the state of trance, since this is also, an obstacle for the trance. Its restrain is to be performed effort fully like all other modifications. Sleep modification is also, a type of concentration but it is with the dominance of Inertia Quality. Since it is the stupefied state of mind, it is opposite to the states of Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive trances, so, its restraint is a must to move on the path of Yoga. But for normal life sleep is best for rest and to achieve calm amidst worldly disturbances and pains, so, its total restraint is not possible.
Sleep is compared with the trance. During sleep, there is the inactivity of organs and mind which results in the ending of activities, and thereby a type of steadiness is achieved. But this steadiness is on account of Inertia Quality and is totally different from the steadiness of trance. Sleep, being the state of non-knowledge, is impure steadiness, whereas trance is illuminating and pure steadiness.
