Ancient seer Meaning in English : (divyagandha-samvit) The cognizance of super-physical = subtle smell (yaa) which (asya) the devotee gets (dhaarayataH) by concentrating (naasikaagre) upon the fore-part of the nose (saa) that is (gandha-pravrittiH) higher olfactory sense activity. (jihvaagre rasa-samvit) The cognizance of subtle taste appearing by concentrating upon the fore-part of the tongue is called higher taste activity. (taaluni ruupa-samvit) The cognizance of subtle color appearing by concentrating over the palate is called higher color activity. (jihvaa-madhye sparsha-samvit) The cognizance of subtle touch appearing by concentrating in the middle of the tongue is called higher touch activity. (jihvaa-muule shabda-samvit iti) The cognizance of subtle sounds appearing by concentrating on the root of the tongue is called higher sound activity.
(etaaH) These five (vrittayaH) higher sense-activities (utpannaaH) appearing in the devotee (nibadhnanti) cause the (sthitau) steadiness (chittam) of mind, (sa.nshayam vidhamanti) destroy the doubts, (cha) and (dvaarii-bhavanti) become the entrance to (samaadhi-praj~naayaam iti) state of cognitive power achievable through trance.
(etena) By this (pravrittiH) sense-activity (utpannaa) caused by (chandra-aaditya-graha-maNi-pradiipa-rashmyaadiShu) concentrating on the rays of the moon, the sun, the planet, the jewel, and the lamp, etc, is also, (veditavyaa) to be understood (eva) as (viShayavati) sense perception.
(yadyapi) Although (artha-tattvam) the object (avagatam) known by (tat-tat shaastra-anumana-aacharya-upadeshaiH) the respective science = scripture, inference or teaching of the learned teacher (bhavati) is (sadbhuutam eva) of course true (with regard to its properties) (hi) because (eteShaam) these (= respective science, inference and learned teacher) (yathaa-bhuutaartha-pratipaadana-saamarthyaat) are capable of establishing the true nature of the properties of the object; (tathaa-api) yet (yaavat) as long as (ekadesho-api kashchit) even a portion of the object = subject (na bhavati) is not cognized (sva-karaNa-samvedyo) by one's own senses and mind, (taavat) till then (sarvam) everything is (parokSham iva) remains unbelievable = unknown only; and (driDhaam buddhim) the firm ground is (na utpaadayati) not created with regard to (sukShmeShu artheShu) the knowledge of subtle objects = subjects (apavargaadiShu) such as state of salvation.
(tasmaat) Therefore (shaastra-anumaana-aacharya-upadeshopo-dvalanaartham) to confirm the objects = subjects known through respective science, inference, and teachings of learned teachers, (avashyam eva) it is necessary that (kashchit arthavisheShaH) some particular object = subject should be (pratyakShii-karttavyaH) perceived by oneself.
When (tatra) out of the subtle objects = subjects, (tad-upadiShTaartha) taught as above, (eka-desha pratyakShatve sati) one portion of any object /subject is perceived, then (sarvam sukShma-viShayam) all subtle objects = subjects (aapavargaat api) up to the salvation also, (shraddhiiyate) become believable. (etat artham eva) It is for this reason, i.e., to make one believe in Yogic science and its results, only (idam) this (chitta-parikaram) mental embellishment (nirdishyate) is taught, so, that (aniyataasu vrittiShu) on knowing the undetermined = unstable form of these sense activities, and with the result (upajaataayaam) on the appearance of (vashiikaara-sa.nj~naayaam) supremacy of consciousness i.e., desirelessness (tat viShayaayaam) in these objects, Yogi (samartham syaat) becomes capable of (pratyakShii-karaNaaya) perceiving (tasya-tasya arthasya iti) all those objects = subjects of such modifications. (tathaa cha sati) And when this happens (asya) this Yogi (bhaviShyanti) will get (shraddha-viirya-smriti-samaadhayaH) faith, energy, memory, and trance (apratibandhena iti) without any obstacles.
Vedic Commentary in English : After explaining the important means of 'Regulation of Breath' as a means for steadiness of mind, Seer Patanjali explains the other means for steadiness of mind by these aphorisms. In this aphorism cognizance of subtle objects is described as the steadiness of mind.
In the subtle objects - smell is the property of earth, taste is the property of water, color is the property of fire, touch is the property of air and sound is the property of sky = space. By concentrating on the fore-part of the nose, a devotee is able to cognize the super-physical = subtle smell. Similarly, by concentrating upon the fore-part of the tongue, cognizance of super-physical = subtle taste; by concentrating over the palate, cognizance of super-physical = subtle color; by concentrating in the middle of the tongue, cognizance of super-physical = subtle touch; and by concentrating in the root of the tongue, cognizance of super-physical = subtle sound take place. These cognizances are, respectively called higher olfactory sense activity, higher taste activity, higher color activity, higher touch activity, and higher sound activity. Seer Vyaasa had clearly mentioned that sense activity caused by concentrating on the rays of the moon, the sun, the planet, the jewel, and the lamp, etc., is also, to be understood as sense perception, i.e., it is included in super physical color.
In this way, more subtle means for the concentration of the mind, starting from the cognizance of subtle objects, are explained in the coming aphorisms. The conception of the commentators, who had stated for concentration on the godly idols along with the gross objects for Argumentative Cognitive Trance, is abrogated by means prescribed in these aphorisms. Neither Seer Patanjali had accepted any gross object, as a base for concentration for the steadiness of mind, either primary or secondary means, nor Seer Vyaasa had mentioned any such mean in his commentary. So, any such conception is not only against the principles of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa but also, is imaginary, wrong, and against the Vedas. In fact, till the time of Mahabharata, there was nothing like idol worship in place of GOD, and no such precedent is available in this regard. So, Swami Dayanand Saraswati said in this regard—
"By this idol worship cannot be accepted. Since nowhere these are accepted as God. As these idols are inanimate objects, so, the Yogi accepts them as it is. The practice of Yoga is to divert the external modification inward. It is nowhere written to concentrate on external gross objects since steadiness of mind cannot take place in the objects with parts. And, if it can take place, the minds of people are involved in the spouse, children, property and other affairs of the world, but none of the minds is steady and calm" (Hugli Debate - on Idol worship).
These five higher sense activities, appearing in the devotee, cause the steadiness of mind, clear the wrong knowledge and doubts, and become the base for entrance to trance-power. This fact had been declared in the commentary on aphorism 1.1 as - "... trance taking place in the one-pointed state of mind shows an existing object in its real form ...". So, when the real form of all the objects will be cognized, then all the doubts and false knowledge will automatically destroy.
The means for steadiness of the mind are the base for achieving the cognitive trance. In this way, cognizance of subtle objects, mentioned in aphorism 1.45, stabilizes the Meditative Cognitive Trance.
Seer Vyaasa said that the true properties of objects are explained in the various scriptures. But the devotee should cognize at least an object or a part of it through his own senses and mind. In such a case, all the subtle objects and subjects, which are described in the scriptures along with the state of salvation, become believable like the perceived object or subject.
But these higher sense activities are not the ultimate target of Yoga. All these super-physical cognizances come under the visible and invisible = subtle objects. It is necessary to achieve the state of Desirelessness towards these objects to achieve the higher planes in a cognitive trance. So, by maintaining Desirelessness, the mind becomes capable of perceiving all subjects and objects. In this way by the practice of means of faith, energy, memory, and trance, as explained in aphorism 1.20, the devotee achieves the higher state of Yoga without any obstacles.
