In English:
Component Word : yathaa abhimata dhyaanaat vaa.
Sutra in English : yathaabhimatadhyaanaadvaa .39.
Meaning in English : (vaa) Or one can attain the state of steadiness of mind by (yathaa-abhimata dhyaanaat) concentrating on any one object or subject = knowledge as described in previous aphorisms (1.35-1.38) as means of steadiness of mind.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Or, the various means of steadiness as described from "the cognizance of subtle smell by concentrating upon the fore-part of the nose" (yoga 1.35) to "concentrating upon the knowledge of sleep" (yoga 1.38), the yogi should concentrate on any one of the above means, wherever he has choice = predilection, he should concentrate there only. (Hugli Debate)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : yadevaabhimata.m tadeva dhyaayet. tatra labdhasthitikamanyatraapi sthitipada.m labhata iti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yadeva) Whichever the mean of steadiness of mind (abhimatam) is liked by the Yogi, (tadeva dhyaayet) there only he should concentrate. (tatra labdha-sthitikam) On becoming steady in that object = subject he (labhate) attains (sthitipadam) the steadiness (anyatra-api iti) in other objects = subject = knowledge also.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali had advised various means for achieving steadiness of mind from 'viShayavatii vaa pravrittiH-utpannaa manasaH sthitinibandhanii' (aphorism 1.35) to 'svapnanidraa-GYaanaalambanam vaa' (aphorism 1.38). All these means are important to purify the mind and achieve its steadiness. But it should not be confused that every devotee is to adopt all the above means to achieve the steadiness of mind, so, Seer Patanjali had advised in this aphorism that one can attain the steadiness of mind by any mean as advised above as per his choice and he should concentrate there only.
Seer Vyaasa said that a devotee achieves steadiness of mind by concentrating on any means of his liking = choice. And on becoming steady in that subject = object, he can attain steadiness in other subjects = objects also. In such a case he is not required to put extra labor into concentrating on other means.
Swami Dayanand very clearly said in this regard that - from "the cognizance of subtle smell by concentrating upon the fore-part of the nose" by which yogi cognizes the super-physical = subtle smell which is called as higher olfactory sense-activity; to "concentrating upon the knowledge of sleep" i.e., concentrating on the knowledge of sleep - the yogi should concentrate on any one of the above means, wherever he has choice = predilection, he should concentrate there only.
Seer Patanjali had advised the various means, as per scriptures, for steadiness of mind in these aphorisms; and by adopting any of these means, the steadiness of mind is achieved. Further Seer Patanjali had used the word 'or' with all these aphorisms which means one can adopt any of these means.
Bhoja while writing his commentary on this aphorism said to concentrate on any external object, and navel plexus, etc. (= various Chakras in the body) as internal objects. This is against the principles of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, and hence not acceptable. Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had not prescribed performing Sanyama in any chakra other than the “navel plexus”. The performance of Sanyama in various chakras was first prescribed in Hathayoga only. The real purpose of chakras and their harmony is not related to Yoga and attainments. So, attaining steadiness of mind by performing concentration in chakras is not desired here. The various commentators after the Bhoja have given the explanation as per their wish to the term 'yatha-abhimat' = 'as liked = desired'. They have even prescribed a concentration on an idol of some god of one's liking i.e., Shiva, Durga, Vishnu, Ganesh, Sun, etc. which is totally against the principles of Yoga as explained by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa and also, against the principles of Vedic scriptures. Such type of concentration cannot result in one-pointedness = steadiness of mind. Seer Patanjali had not advised for concentration on gross objects in any of the above means, nor had advised these objects for meditation in this scripture. So, the steadiness of the mind is not possible on the basis of concentration on such objects. Even some of the modern commentators = teachers of Yoga are prescribing some means like leaving the mind uncontrolled, laughing, performing as per mental modification, etc., but these means are not capable of manifesting steadiness of mind.
In the same way, some of the commentators have advised to adopt the various means as advised in other scriptures. But these commentators had not given an example of any such mean, which is not prescribed by Seer Patanjali. Seer Patanjali had advised all possible means for steadiness and purity of mind which are helpful and acceptable to achieve the fruits of Yoga.
