Ancient seer Meaning in English : (kShiinavritteH iti arthaH) The meaning of "kShiina-vritte" is (pratyastamita) ending = disappearance of (pratyayasya iti) the modifications that arise due to Activity and Inertia properties in the mind. For that mind (abhijaatasya maNeH iva iti) "like a transparent crystal" (driShTaanta-upaadaanam) example is given. (yathaa) As (sphaTika) the crystal (uparaktaH) becomes colored (upaashraya-bhedaat tat tat ruupaH) by the colors of the objects placed beside it, and (nirbhaasate) recognized (upaashraya-ruupaakaareNa) according to the form of the object only; (tathaa) similarly (chittam) the above type of concentrated mind (i.e., without the modifications resulting from Activity and Inertia properties) (graahya-aalambanoparaktam) colored by the gross and subtle objects, (graahya-samaapannam) taking the shape of the objects presented to it, (nirbhaasate) appears (graahya-svaruupaakaareNa) in the form of the gross or subtle object.
(tathaa) Similarly, the mind (bhuuta-sukShma-uparaktam) colored by the subtle elements, (bhuuta-sukShma-samaapannam) taking the shape of subtle elements, (bhavati) appears (bhuuta-sukShma-svaruupaabhaasam) in the form of subtle elements. (tathaa) Similarly, the mind (sthuula-aalambana-uparaktam) colored by the gross objects = elements, (sthuula-ruupa-samaapannam) taking the shape = form of gross objects = elements, (bhavati) appears (sthuula-ruupaabhaasam) in the form of gross objects = elements. (tathaa) Similarly, the mind (vishva-bheda-uparaktam) colored by the distinctions of the world coming into contact, (vishva-bheda-samaapannam) taking the form of distinct objects of the world, (bhavati) appears (vishva-ruupaabhaasam) in the form of distinctions of the world.
(tathaa) Similarly, (driShTavyam api) the same is also, to be known (grahaNeShu indriyeShu) in the case of sense organs which are means of receiving knowledge. The mind (grahaNaalambana-uparaktam) colored by the subtle sense organs, (grahaNa-samaapannam) taking the form of the contacted sense organ, (nirbhaasate) appears (grahaNa-svaruupaa-kaareNa) in the form of that sense organ.
(tathaa) Similarly, the mind (grahiitri-puruShaalambana-uparaktam) colored by the knower = the Soul, (grahiitri-puruSha-samaapannam) taking the form of knower = the Soul, (nirbhaasate) appears (grahiitri-puruSha-svaruupaakaareNa) in the form of Soul =the knower. (tathaa) Similarly, the mind (mukta-puruShaalambana-uparaktam) colored by the released = freed Soul, (mukta-puruSha-samaapannam) taking the form of the released Soul, (nirbhaasate) appears (mukta-puruSha-svaruupaa-kaarena iti) in the form of released Soul.
(tat) This (evam) way (chetasaH) the mind, (abhijaata-maNi-kalpasya) like the transparent crystal, (yaa tat-stha-tada~njanataa) depending upon the objects contacted, i.e., (grahiitri-grahaNa-graahyeShu puruSha-indriya-bhuuteShu) grahiitri = puruSha = Soul, grahaNa = indriyaani = sense organs, and graahyeShu = bhuut = gross and subtle objects = elements, (teShu sthitasya) colored by these objects and taking the form of the respective contacted object (tadaakaaraapattiH) appears in the form the objects contacted to it, and (saa) this is (uchyate) called as (samaapattiH iti) cognitive trance.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali described four types of cognitive trance on account of various objects of concentration in the form of argumentative, meditative, beatitude, and egoism. What is the state of mind in the cognitive trance? Or which state of mind, which has achieved the illuminating nature, is to be known as cognitive trance? This is explained in this aphorism.
When the devotee on the path of yoga, destroys the modifications of 'Activity' and 'Inertia' Qualities by the practice of accessories of yoga and performance desirelessness, then the modifications of the mind are primarily affected by 'Illuminating Quality'. In this way, by the performance of various purificatory acts, the steadiness of illuminating the mind is achieved. The trance is achieved in such a steady and one-pointed mind. What is the form of that cognitive trance? What is the form of mind in that state? This has been said by an example - "like a transparent crystal".
As a pure transparent crystal appears in the color of red, yellow, blue, green, etc. on account of a red, yellow, blue, or green object placed before it; similarly, the illuminating mind also, colored by various objects = remaining contacted with the various objects, taking the shape of the objects contacted with, appears in the shape of those objects = in the form of those objects. This state of mind is called a cognitive trance.
As the base of concentration for the mind, the various objects are classified into three categories - the knower = the soul; the organs; and the gross and subtle objects. The gross objects are directly available for concentration and the atoms which are the material cause of the gross objects, are taken as subtle objects; the external and internal organs in the form of work organs and sense organs are taken as organs, as well as mind, the egoism, the conception of Pure Beness is to be included in the organs since the Soul achieves knowledge of the external world through these. Similarly, the sense organs are the power of the senses, not the external eyes, etc. The external body organs of eyes etc. are included in the gross objects. So, all the objects of the world and the Soul are included in these three categories.
In the aphorism, for cognizance, the sequence of knower, organs, and objects is prescribed. But for taking the base of concentration, the devotee is to start with the gross objects, then subtle objects, organs, and lastly Soul is to be taken as a base for concentration. For this reason, Seer Vyaasa gave this sequence in his commentary. First of all, he had prescribed the base of gross and subtle objects for concentration; then the appearance of the mind in the form of various distinctions of the world coming into contact is explained. After the cognizance of gross and subtle objects, the base of organs, through which the gross and subtle objects are cognized in the normal course of life, is taken for cognizance; and lastly, after making the external objects as a base of concentration, the knower = the Soul is accepted as base of concentration. In the commentary of Seer Vyaasa, with regard to the base of "released = freed Soul", the persons who became eligible to get freed, are to be accepted as the base of concentration, not the emancipated Souls, since such souls cannot become available for concentration.
In this way by making the above objects as a base of concentration, Yogi cognizes these objects in the cognitive trance. In fact, in the cognitive trance, the mind being colored with the various objects, cognizes those objects in their true form, i.e., by concentrating on the gross and subtle objects, the real knowledge of these objects is perceived; by concentrating on the organs, the real knowledge of organs is perceived; and by concentrating on the knower = the Soul, the real knowledge of Soul is perceived. But the devotee has to first obtain the verbal knowledge of these objects, as given in the various Vedic scriptures, then only he will be able to cognize those objects, in the state of cognitive trance, in their true form (Ref aphorism 1.49 - 'shrutaanumaan-praGYaabhyaam-anyaviShayaa visheShaarthatvaat'). Before meditation and cognizance, verbal knowledge of various objects by way of hearing and/or study is a must. So, without the verbal knowledge of various targeted objects before reaching the state of meditation and cognizance, the devotee cannot be benefitted from the cognitive trance. In this regard we must understand the four stages of knowledge as explained by Swami Dayanand Saraswati in chapter 9 of 'Light of Truth' on the basis of Vedic scriptures —shravaNa chatuShThayaa (= Four steps Realisation Method) is as follows:-
1. shravaNa = Listening is to listen most attentively with a calm mind to the discourse or speech of a learned man and more so if the subject be Divine science because it is the most abstruse and the subtlest of all the sciences.
2. manana = Logical thinking is thinking over, what one has heard, in retirement, and removing doubts if there be any by questioning the speaker. Questions may sometimes be asked even in the middle of discourse if the speaker and the audience think it is proper.
3. nidhidhyaasana = Meditation. When all doubts are cleared after hearing a discourse and thinking over it, let the enquirer enter into the superior condition and see for himself with the help of yoga (= trance) whether it is the same as he had heard and reasoned out or not. This is called Nidhidhyaasana = Meditation.
4. saakShaatakaara = Cognizance is the resulting correct knowledge of the nature, properties, and characteristics of the desired object.
Some of the commentators have classified the argumentative and meditative trance for gross and subtle objects, beatitude cognitive trance for the organs, and egoism cognitive trance for the cognizance of the Soul. But this classification is not as per Seer Vyaasa. There is no such indication in the Vyaasa commentary. For understanding the real form of the four cognitive trances, refer to Vedic commentary on aphorism 1.17 in this book.
