Sutra in English : tataH punaH shaantoditau tulyapratyayau chittasyaikaagrataapariNaamaH.12.
Meaning in English : (tataH punaH) After the trance-modification of mind, when (shaanta-uditau) subsiding and rising (pratyayau) cognitive acts (tulya) are similar, then it is called (ekaagrataa-pariNaamaH) one-pointed modification (chittasya) of the mind.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : samaahitachittasya puurvapratyayaH shaantaH uttarastatsadRRisha uditaH. samaadhichittamubhayoranugata.m punastathaivaa.a.a- samaadhibhreShaaditi. sa khalvaya.m dharmiNashchittasyaikaagrataa-pariNaamaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (samaahita-chittasya) In the mind, which is in the state of trance modification, (puurva-pratyayaH) the former cognitive act (shaantaH) subsides, and (uttaraH) after that (tat-sadrishaH) the similar cognitive act (uditaH) rises. (samaadhi-chittam) The mind inclined towards trance (anugatam) follows (ubhayoH) both types of cognitive acts; (punaH) and (tathaa eva) the same type of cognitive act continues in sequence, in the mind, (aasamaadhi-bhreShaat iti) up to the end of trance.
(saH khalu ayam) This type of modification is called (ekaagrataa-pariNaamaH) one-pointed modification (dharmiNaH chittasya) of the characterized mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : Trance modification taking place in the mind, dominated by Quality of Illumination, is known as Cognitive Trance, and takes place in the one-pointed state of mind. Here yogi makes various objects as a base for trance. In what way the one-pointedness takes place in those objects, is explained by Seer Patanjali in this aphorism.
After achieving the trance modification, on an object = subject where the yogi concentrates, after subsiding of knowledge of that object, he again manifests a similar type of knowledge. And the continuation of this sequence is called a one-pointed modification of the mind. In this way in the one-pointed modification of the mind, subsiding and rising of similar cognitive acts of the targeted object = subject, continue up to the end of the trance. It means that when in the Argumentative Cognitive Trance, the yogi makes the base of gross objects, senses, etc., and achieves trance on these objects, then cognitive act/knowledge, of the targeted object alone, of precedent moment subsides and the same type of cognitive act/knowledge manifest in the present moment, and by the continuation of similar cognitive act/knowledge during the trance; and in this way, the mind is said to be concentrated on that subject = object.
During the trance modification, on the manifestation of cognitive act/knowledge of any object = subject other than the targeted object, the trance ends. In this way, the continuation of similar cognitive acts/knowledge, of the targeted object, is with the efforts of the Yogi alone. The mind cannot cognize any object on its own.
In the eternal sequence of the life-death-life-cycle, due to the dominance of worldly potencies, and non-stop practice of all-pointedness, the devotee has to put strong efforts to maintain the state of one-pointedness. For this purpose, the devotee should obtain the verbal knowledge of the object, on which trance is required to be achieved, from the Vedas and Vedic scriptures which will help him to maintain the concentration on that object = subject; otherwise, one-pointed modification state will not last long. So, in order to increase the time-slab of one-pointed modification, Yogi should practice the means of verbal discriminative knowledge (as achieved from Vedic scriptures) and Desirelessness. By this one-pointed modification, the yogi is able to cognize the various subject = object in the trance; not in any other state of mind before this one.
