Preface to Sutra in English : ato yogina upaattasarvasaadhanasya bubhutsitaarthapratipattaye sa.myamasya viShaya upakShipyate —
Meaning in English : (ataH) Hereafter (upakShipyate) is introduced the (viShayaH) subject (sa.nyamasya) of Sanyama to be performed (yoginaH) by the Yogi (bubhutsitaartha-pratipattaye) with the object of obtaining knowledge of desired objects = subjects (upaatta-sarva-saadhanasya) when he has mastered all the accessories of Yoga —
Sutra in English : pariNaamatrayasa.myamaadatiitaanaagataj~naanam.16.
Meaning in English : (sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama = Concentration, Meditation, and Trance (pariNaama-traya) over the three-fold changes of an object, Yogi (atiita-anaagataj~naanam) gets the knowledge of the past and future of that characterized object.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : dharmalakShaNaavasthaapariNaameShu sa.myamaadyoginaa.m bhavatyatiita-anaagataj~naanam. dhaaraNaadhyaanasamaadhitrayamekatra sa.myama uktaH. tena pariNaamatraya.m saakShaatkriyamaaNa-matiitaanaagataj~naana.m teShu sampaadayati.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (sa.nyamaat) By performing Sanyama (dharma-lakShaNa-avasthaa-pariNaameShu) over the changes of characteristic, secondary quality, and condition, of an object (yoginaam) Yogi (bhavati) get (atiita-anaagata-j~naanam) the past and future knowledge of the characterized object. (dhaaraNaa-dhyaana-samaadhi-trayam) The triad of Concentration, Meditation, and Trance (ekatra) on a particular object = subject (uktaH) is called (sa.nyamaH) Sanyama.
On (saakShaat-kriyamaaNam) doing the direct cognition (pariNaama-trayam) of three-fold changes of the object (tena) by Sanyama, (teShu) Yogi (sampaadayati) achieves (atiita-anaagata-j~naanam) the past and future knowledge of the targeted object = subject.
Vedic Commentary in English : This is the first attainment of this chapter. When a yogi performs Sanyama on characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes of any substratum = characterized object, then he obtains the knowledge of past, present, and future of that object. The characteristic, secondary quality, and condition changes take place in organs and gross objects. So, the yogi attains the past and future knowledge of the characteristic change which takes place in the organs and gross objects. Does he know that what is the material cause of the object available as characteristic change? And he also knows that before coming to the present state of existence, what were the various characteristic changes, that took place, in the root material cause; and also has the future knowledge of the object, i.e., what will be the next characteristic changes for that particular object. On the basis of this Sanyama yogi attains the knowledge of the physical bodies of various living beings; i.e., he attains the past knowledge of the bodies in the form of "what are the material causes of these bodies", and attains the future knowledge of the bodies in the form of their destruction process.
There is no reference, in the aphorism as well as in the Vyaasa commentary, about the time knowledge in this regard. So, it should be understood that past and future knowledge of the object is not with reference to the time period. It means that on the basis of this Sanyama yogi, neither knows, unless some other source of information is available, the time of manifestation of a particular object; nor knows that when this object will get destroyed. It also means that on the basis of this Sanyama, he does not know that when a particular living being is born and when he will die in the future. This is also to be understood with regard to other characterized objects.
Seer Patanjali had prescribed characteristics, secondary quality, and condition changes in organs and gross objects. So, by Sanyama on these changes, the yogi knows the past and future knowledge with regard to these objects only. With regard to other objects, such as the eternal Soul and Matter, where these changes do not take place, a yogi cannot attain the past and future knowledge for these objects just like the organs and gross objects, since it is not possible to perform such Sanyama on such eternal objects. So, if somebody describes the past and future knowledge of eternal objects like the Soul, then it should be understood that he is talking baselessly.
