Ancient seer Meaning in English : (karma) Acts which (aayuH-vipaakam) fruits as life-period (dvividham) are two-fold — (1) (sa-upakramam) which are fast-in-fruition, (cha) and (2) (nir-upakramam) which are slow-in-fruition. (tatra) In this regard (yathaa) as (aardram vastram) a wet cloth, (vitaanitam) well spread (shuShyet) dries (laghiiyasaa kaalena) in a short time, (tathaa) similar (sa-upakramam) is a fast-in-fruition act. (cha) And (yathaa) as (tadeva) the same wet cloth, (sampiNDitam) when gathered up, (samshuShyet) dries up (chireNa) in a long time (evam) similar (nir-upakramam) is a slow-in-fruition act. (vaa) Or (yathaa) as (agniH) fire (muktaH) thrown into (shuShke kakShe) dry hay, and (yuktaH) accompanied (vaatena) by wind (samantataH) in all directions (dahet) burns it (kShepiiyasaa kaalena) in a short time, (tathaa) such is (sa-upakramam) fast-in-fruition act. (vaa) And (yathaa) as (saH eva agniH) the same fire, however, (nyastaH) applied (kramashaH) in sequence to (avayaveShu) detached pieces (triNaraashau) of straw out of a heap (dahet) burns them (chireNa) in a long time, (tathaa) similar (nir-upakramam) is a slow-in-fruition act.
(tat) That (karma) act (aayuShkaram) which provides a life-period (eka-bhavikam) in a life-state is (dvividham) two-fold — (sa-upakramam) fast-in-fruition, (cha) and (nir-upakramam) slow-in-fruition. (tat-sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama over these acts, Yogi gets (j~naanam) knowledge (aparaantasya) of death i.e., (praayaNasya) detachment of Soul from the body.
(vaa) And (ariShTebhyaH iti) by the portents also knowledge of death is obtained. (ariShTam) A portent is (trividham) three-fold — (aadhyaatmikam) personal, (aadhibhautikam) elemental, (cha) and (aadhidaivikam) divine. (tatra) Of these (aadhyaatmikam) personal portents are — (na shriNoti) one does not hear (ghoSham) hearable sounds (svadehe) in his own body (pihita-karNaH) on stopping the passage of the ears; (vaa) or (na pashyati) do not see (jyotiH) light (netre avaShTabdhe) on pressing = closing the eyes.
(tathaa) And (aadhibhautikam) elemental portents are — (pashyati) one sees (yama-puruShaan) the persons who cause death or destruction of breath; (pashyati) see (pitriin) the ancestors (atiitaan) those had passed away in past, (akasmaat) suddenly.
(tathaa) And (aadhidaivikam) the divine portents are — (pashyati) one sees (svargam) heavenly world = another world (vaa) or (siddhaan) achievers of the past (akasmaat) suddenly; (vaa) or see (sarvam) everything (vipariitam iti) contrary to its properties and/or nature.
(anena) By these portents (vaa) also (jaanaati) yogi knows (upasthitam) the proximity (aparaantam iti) of death.
Vedic Commentary in English : When yogi performs Sanyama over the fast-in-fruition and slow-in-fruition acts, which fruits as life-period, gets the knowledge of death. It means he knows that the death will take place in the near future or after a time period.
Fast-in-fruition acts are those which provide fruits in the near future; as a wet cloth, which is well spread, dries in a short time. On the other hand, slow-in-fruition acts are those which provide their fruits in a long time; as the same wet cloth put gathered up dries up in a long time.
Both the acts, done in the previous lives as well as in the present life, contribute to the lifetime. In the present life, taking pure and nutritive foods, exercising, performing continence, etc. makes the body strong which results in a longer life period. On the other hand, impure and non-nutritive foods that destroy the body like consumption of alcohol, smoking, drugs, and extra physical pleasure, etc. result in the destruction of the body, and thereby the lifetime is reduced. Apart from these acts which directly affect the strength of the body, there are some other acts prescribed in the scriptures that directly or indirectly affect the body and thereby lifetime, such as —
abhivaadanashiilasya nityam vriddhopasevinaH.
chatvaari tasya vardhante aayuH-vidyaa-yasho-balam. Manusmriti 2.121.
One who is always soft and well-mannered serves the intelligent and aged persons, his four things - lifetime, knowledge, fame, and power, always increase.

By condemning the intellectual having the knowledge of GOD, one loses his lifetime.
rajasaa.abhiplutaam naariim narasya hi-upagachchhataH.
praGYaa tejo balam chakShuH-aayuH-chaiva prahiiyate.
taam vivarjayatastasya rajasaa sambhiplutaam.
praGYaa tejo balam chakShuH-aayuH-chaiva pravardhate. Manusmriti 4.41-42.
One who is having a physical relationship with a woman during menstruation, his knowledge, power, eye-vision, and lifetime get reduced. And one who does not go for a physical relationship with the woman in menstruation, his knowledge, power, eye-vision, and lifetime increases.
In this way, various types of acts are described in the scriptures which affect the lifetime. The acts which have a direct relationship with physical health, that should be treated as fast-in-fruition acts; others are to be treated as slow-in-fruition acts. Out of the above, foods, exercises, the performance of continence, etc. directly affect the body, hence giving their fruits fast, hence are to be treated as fast-in-fruition acts. On the other hand, slow-in-fruition acts are not able to be fruited fast, such acts provide their fruits either in the present life when they find some instrumental cause for their fruition, or these provide fruits in the form of life-states along with the lifetime and life experiences (Refer commentary on aphorism 2.13).
However, by performing Sanyama over the fast-in-fruition and slow-in-fruition acts, a yogi cannot know that when - i.e., on which day, at which time, and at which place death will take place. Neither Seer Patanjali nor Seer Vyaasa had used any such word in the aphorism or given any indication in this regard, nor they had given testimony of any scripture for this.
Some modern commentators accept that the knowledge of death takes place with reference to time and place. Bhoja had also accepted this conception in his commentary, which gave air to such misconception. But this conception is against the principles described in the Vedic Scriptures, hence not acceptable. The time and place of death in not pre-fixed in the fruition system of GOD. (For this please refer to chapter 5 of my book - "Karm and Karmphal Mimaansa" on "Aayu = Lifetime".)
Query:- There is a reference in the life history of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, that he knew his death-time in advance. He had said some three-four years before his death that he would not see the year Samvat 1941. And he expired during Samvat 1940. So, he knew his death time in advance.
Solution:- To whom he had said so, is not known. There is no such reference in this regard in any of his letters. On the other hand, on 21/08/1883, about two and quarter months before his death, he wrote a letter to Munshi Samarthdaan —
"The fourth ashtaka of Rigveda has been completed, tomorrow first chapter of the fifth ashtaka will be completed and the sixth Mandala will be completed today. With the grace of GOD translation of Rigveda will be complete in one year. It will take one and half years for the translation of Samaveda and Atharvaveda." (Ref page 767 of part 2 of "Letters and Advertisements" published by Ramlal Kapoor Trust.)
On 30th Oct 1883, he expired. He had no intuition of death even 2 months and 10 days before his death. So, this suspicion has no base. By propagating these baseless rumors, people do not understand that they are doing harm to the fundamental principles.
On the other hand, one also gets the knowledge of death by portents explained in Ayurveda, and even common people do come to know about this. These are the types of portents explained in Ayurveda —
1. Personal Portents — These portents are mainly related to the body and mind. As on closing the passage of ears, if one does not hear the inside sounds; and on closing the eyes, if one does not see the light etc., then it is an indication of nearby death.
2. Elemental Portents — These portents are related to other living beings. In this regard, Seer Vyaasa had said that one suddenly sees the ancestors and "Yam-purusha". "Yam-purusha" is taken as "envoy of God of death" in the "Garuda Purana" a Hindu scripture, and most of the commentators have taken the same meaning; but this is not the correct meaning. Bhoja said that a person with a defective face or a person having wickedness = a sinful mentality. From the meaning of Bhoja, it is clear that the above-said: "Garuda Purana" was not in existence till the time of Bhoja or he has not accepted the "Garuda Purana" as true scripture. The true meaning of "Yam-purusha" can be understood from the following scriptural testimonies —
A. vaajinam yamam (Rigveda 8.24.22); yamaH suuvamaano viShnuH sambhriyamaaNo vaayuH puuyamaanaH (Yajurved 5.57); ayam vai yamo yo.ayam (vaayuH) pavate (Shatapatha Brahamana 14.2.2.11 on Yajurveda 38.9); from the above testimonies it is clear that air is named as "yama". On the basis of this when there is obstruction of air = breath in the body, then it is to be understood as "Yam-purusha"; it means when there is obstruction of the breath, it is a sign of death.
B. ye duShTaan yachchhanti nigrihnanti te yamaa nyaayaadhiishaH. The judges who sentence the evil-doers and protect the virtuous and just people, are known as "yama". (Chapter 4, Light of Truth). So, viewing the judges and persons involved in the justice system i.e., a slaughterer who hangs the victim, by the evil-doers is also known as viewing "Yam-purusha".
C. Viewing of a person who has a wicked mentality and wants to harm others or kill them (as the terrorist in the present society), is the viewing of "Yam-purusha"; since these people kill others without any reasoning for their vested self-interests.
In the same way as the basis of "pitriloko yamaH" (Kaushitaki Brahamana 16.8) and "yamo vaivasvato raajetyaaha tasya pitro vishaH" (Shatpatha Brahamana 13.4.3.6) viewing the ancestors of the past is also said as a portent.
3. Divine Portents — These portents are based on the other substratum or places. It is described as when one sees everything contrary to its properties, or suddenly sees a heavenly world that is not normally seen; or sees the achievers of the past; these are examples of divine portents.
In fact, when death is near, the power of the organs and body deteriorates, and viewing such inconsistent knowledge shows the proximity of death. Even the common persons do have knowledge of death by the portent. But yogi has more specific knowledge of death in a more certain way by performing Sanyama over the fast-in-fruition and slow-in-fruition acts and by portents.
