Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yathaa) As (paramaaNuH) an atom is (apakarSha-paryantam) subtlest part (where the minuteness reaches its limit) (dravyam) of a substance; (evam) similarly (kShaNaH) a moment is (parama-apakarSha-paryantaH kaalaH) a division of time where the minuteness reaches its limit. (vaa) Or (yaavataa samayena) the time taken (chalitaH) by a moving (paramaaNuH) atom (jahyaat) to leave (puurva-desham) the space occupied by it and (upasampadyeta) reaches (uttara-desham) the next point of space, (saH kaalaH) that time (kShaNaH) is called a moment. And (pravaaha-avichchhedaH tu) non-cessation of flow (tat) of those moments (kramaH) is a succession of moments.
(kShaNa-tat-kramayoH) The moments and their succession (vastu-samaahaaraH na asti) are not considered as a group (iti) therefore (muhuurtta-ahoraatraadayaH) Muhuurata = a time of 2 two ‘ghati’ = 48 minutes, day and night, etc. are (buddhi-samaahaaraH) aggregates of mental conceptions. (saH khalu ayam kaalaH) This time, a collection of moments, (vastu-shuunyaH api) which is not a substantive reality also, and (buddhi-nirmaaNaH) is a mental creation, and (shabda-j~naana-anupaatii) following the verbal knowledge (avabhaasate) appears (vyutthita-darshanaa-naam laukikaanaam) to the common people whose minds are involved in out-going activities or whose minds are not concentrated, (vastu-svaruupa iva) as if it is an objective reality.
(kShaNaH) The moment, (tu) however, (vastu-patitaH) is a substantive reality, and (krama-avalambii) is the base for the succession. (cha) And (kramaH) succession is (kShaNa-anantaryaatmaa) in the nature of the sequence of moments. (yoginaH) Yogi (kaalavidaH) who knows the time (aachakShate) calls (tam) that (kaalaH iti) by the name of time.
(cha) And (dvau kShaNau) two moments (na) do not (saha bhavataH) co-exist, (cha) and (kramaH na) there is no succession also (dvayo sahabhuvaH) for two co-existent moments since (asambhavaat) co-existence of two moments is not possible. Here the question arises then - What is succession? (aanantaryam) The continuity (yat) which is there (puurvasmaat) from the previous moment (uttarasya bhaavinaH kShaNasya) to the next following moment, (saH) which is called (kramaH) succession. (tasmaat) For this reason (ekaH kShaNaH) one moment (eva) alone (varttamaanaH) is present i.e., existing in the present, and (puurva-uttara-kShaNaaH) the antecedent and post-cedent moments (na santi iti) do not exist i.e., are not available. (tasmaat) Therefore (na asti) there cannot be (tat-samaahaaraH) collection of moments (in the form of day and night etc.)
(ye tu) And which (bhuuta-bhaavinaH kShaNaaH) are past and future moments (te) they (vyaakhyeyaaH) are to be described as (pariNaama-anvitaa) existing in the past state and futuristic state of change. (kritsnaH lokaH) The whole world (anubhavati) experience (pariNaamam) change (tena ekena kShaNena) in that one present moment and (khalu amii sarve dharmaaH) all these characteristics (tat-kShaNo-paaruuDhaaH) are manifested = established in that present moment.
(sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama (tayoH kShaNa-tat-kramayoH) over the moment and its succession, (tayoH saakShaat-karaNam) direct cognition = knowledge of both is obtained, (cha) and (tataH) from that direct cognition (vivekajam j~naanam) knowledge born-of-discrimination (praadurbhavati) is manifested.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali had advised Sanyama over a moment and its succession for having knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. In aphorism 3.54, it is said as intuitional, has everything for its sphere of operation, has all conditions for its sphere of operation, and is without the want of succession. With regard to the distinctive knowledge of Matter and Soul, for the cognizance of Soul, Seer Patanjali had advised Sanyama over the notion of self, in aphorism 3.35. But after having the cognizance of Matter and its products, which are changeable in nature, by the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', discriminative knowledge of Matter and Soul gets more deep-rooted in the mind of this yogi; since in such state by knowing the inferiority of changeable, inanimate Matter and its products which are for the purpose of Soul, as compared to that of Soul, the yogi does not get involved in the attachment for the Matter and its products.
Seer Vyaasa said that an atom is the subtlest part of a substance, in the same way, the subtlest part of the time is known as the "moment". In this regard the relation between the atom and moment is explained as the time taken by a moving atom to leave the space occupied by it and reach the next point of space, that time is known as "moment". The non-cessation of the flow of those moments is a succession of moments.
Moment and its succession are not considered as a group, therefore the terms of the day, night, etc. are only the aggregates of mental conceptions and are not substantive reality. These conceptions, although not being the substantive reality, but created by verbal knowledge, are commonly used and accepted in human behavior, hence false knowledge only. On the other hand, the moment is a substantive reality, and is also a base for succession; and the sequence of moments is known as succession. This succession of moments is called "time". In fact, two moments cannot co-exist, only and only one moment, the present moment, is always available. In the absence of the existence of two moments at a time, their succession is also not possible. In such a situation, succession is clarified as the continuity of the previous moment to the next following moment. The previous moment exists in the past state of change and the coming moment exists in the futuristic state of change. On account of this succession of moments, the past and future secondary qualities of an object get explained.
The whole world of experience, comes into existence in the present moment and all the characteristics are manifested in the present moment of time; and this present moment becomes past in the next moment and the future moment becomes available as the present moment.
By performing Sanyama over the moment and its succession, yogi cognizes both of them, and all that is available in the present moment along with their past and future secondary qualities changes; and this knowledge is known as knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. With this knowledge, a yogi is able to know the real changeable form of all the products of Matter. This 'born-of-discrimination' knowledge alone, as explained in the next aphorism, makes the distinction between two similar objects.
Bhoja and some of the commentators had said that the other means to achieve discriminative knowledge, as explained in aphorism 3.49, is knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' i.e., performing Sanyama over the moments and their succession. In fact, discriminative knowledge, as explained in aphorism 3.49, refers to the discriminative knowledge of Mind and Soul, and that is not the subject of this aphorism. The prime reason for this is that the change of time does not take place in eternal objects; the two properties of knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' on account of distinction of time, as explained in 3.54 further, are that this knowledge has all conditions for its sphere of operation and is without the want of succession. Of these properties, the meaning of the first property is that Yogi knows all the past and futuristic states and conditions of all the objects in sequence and all respects; and the meaning of the second property is that he takes in all the changes in secondary qualities and conditions in all respects and that too in one moment. These two properties are applicable in the characteristic changes of the material objects because these have secondary quality and condition changes; but on the other hand, the conscious Soul has neither secondary quality changes nor condition changes, as the movement of time has nowhere accepted, in conscious Soul, in the scriptures and Vedas. As there are past and future characteristics of products of Matter, such types of past and future characteristics = properties are not there in the conscious Soul and GOD. Conscious objects are available in the same form, at all times.
Discriminative knowledge of Mind and Soul is of a higher level as compared to knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' on account of Sanyama over the moment and its succession. The reasons for this are —
1. Knowledge is 'born of discrimination' on account of Sanyama over the moment and its succession is limited to the objects = products of Matter, but discriminative knowledge includes the knowledge of the Soul along with that of the mind.
2. Seer Vyaasa seems to be of the same opinion. In his commentary to aphorism 3.55, he clearly said — "When the mind with Illumination Quality, in which the impurities of Qualities of Activity and Inertia are removed, has the notion of distinctness of Soul only, and all seeds of afflictions have been burnt-up, then the mind achieves the state of purity similar to that of Soul only. At that time absence of enjoyment attributable to the Soul, is a purity of the Soul. In this state, whether yogi has obtained various powers of yoga or has not obtained them; and he possesses the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' or does not possess the same, he achieves salvation = absolute independence". It means that for salvation yogi must have achieved the discriminative knowledge of Mind and Soul, and all the seeds of afflictions have been burnt up, but knowledge 'born of discrimination' is not a pre-condition for salvation. From this, it is clear that Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had intended only the knowledge of Matter and its objects from the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', not the knowledge of Soul and discriminative knowledge.
So, the knowledge 'born of discrimination' is related to the objects made from Matter only.

१. क्षण और उसके क्रम में संयम से होने वाले विवेकजज्ञान में प्रकृति और उसके विकारों का ज्ञान रहता है; जबकि सत्त्व-पुरुष भेद ज्ञान में प्रकृति के साथ पुरुष का भी ज्ञान रहता है;
