Ancient seer Meaning in English : (taarakam iti) Intuitional (arthaH) means that (svapratibhottham) knowledge is generated by one's own prescience, (anaupa-deshikam iti) not by teaching from others.
(sarva-viShayam iti) Has everything for its sphere of operation (arthaH) means that (na ki~nchit aviShayii-bhuutam) there is no object which is not a subject (asya) of the knowledge born of discrimination.
(sarvathaa-viShayam iti) Has every condition for its sphere of operation (arthaH) means that yogi (jaanaati) knows (atiita-anaagata-pratyutpannam) all the past and futuristic states and conditions (sarvam) of all the objects (paryaayaiH) in sequence and (sarvathaa) in all respects.
(akramam iti) It is without the want of succession (arthaH) means that he (grihNaati) takes in (sarvam) all the changes in secondary qualities and conditions (sarvathaa) in all respects (eka-kShaNa-upaaruuDham iti) and that too in one moment.
Thus (etat) this (vivekajam j~naanam) knowledge born-of-discrimination is (pari-puurNam) complete and absolute. (yoga-pradiipaH) Light of Yoga is (a.nshaH) a part of (asya eva) this only which (upaadaaya) begins with (madhu-matiim bhuumim) plane of Madhumati = attainment of cognitive faculty and (yaavat asya parisamaaptiH iti) remains up to the end of this knowledge.
Vedic Commentary in English : The properties of knowledge 'born of discrimination', achieved by Sanyama over the moment and its succession, which make the yogi know the subtlest distinction of the objects, are explained in this aphorism. These are as follows:-
1. Intuitional:- Knowledge 'born of discrimination' is said as intuitional. While clarifying it Seer Vyaasa said that the knowledge which is generated by one's own prescience is intuitional. It means that in this knowledge teachings of a preacher = teacher are not required, but in order to know any subject, the yogi performs Sanyama on the moment and its succession related to that object, which results in the additional specific knowledge of that subject = object in addition to the read or heard knowledge, and this way he gets the complete knowledge of the targeted object. In this way, knowledge manifested by his own prescience and yogic achievement is known as intuitional.
Bhoja, on the other hand, defined the property of intuitional as "the knowledge by which the Soul gets rid of the world = vicious life-cycle". In this way, the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' helps the yogi to come out from the life-cycle. Most of the commentators have followed this definition and explained this property accordingly. But this definition is not in tune with the definition of Seer Vyaasa. The knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' is the result of Illumination Quality, and as such is inferior to the Soul; and in order to achieve Ultra-cognitive Trance, desirelessness from this knowledge is a must. so, the afflictions and vehicle of action do not come in the burnt-up state with the help of knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', hence it cannot be said as a means to get rid of the life-cycle. So, the meaning given by Seer Vyaasa is more appropriate. However, with the help of knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' yogi gets the specific knowledge of various objects and thereby his modifications move towards the knowledge of Soul, and in this context, it can be said as one of the important meant for moving towards Ultra-cognitive Trance. But in order to achieve his ultimate target of salvation, a yogi is required to become desireless even toward the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'.
2. "sarvaviShayam" = Has everything for its sphere of operation:- Knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' has all objects in its sphere, i.e., the yogi is able to have the distinctive knowledge of all the subjects, by performing Sanyama over the moment and its succession related to the concerned object. Here all the objects include all the products of Matter. It does not mean that yogis can have knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' on any subjects without performing Sanyama.
3. "sarvathaviShayam" = Has all conditions for its sphere of operation:- It means that yogi is able to know past and futuristic knowledge of all the available objects, by above type of Sanyama, in sequence and all respects. It means by knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', manifested by performing Sanyama as above, the yogi is able to know the past secondary quality and future secondary quality changes and condition changes of the targeted object, i.e., the yogi knows that the object was in which state in the past, and what will be the future change of the object. So, the yogi knows the secondary quality and condition changes of an object in all respects.
4. "akramam" = Without want of succession:- While clarifying the meaning Seer Vyaasa said that yogi takes in all, in all respects, in one moment. On the basis of this, some of the commentators wrote that yogis know multiple objects in one moment simultaneously. But the meaning of "all" is not "all the available objects", but is "all the secondary qualities and condition changes of one object". So, the meaning of without want of succession is to be understood as - the object that is available at present, came in the present state of manifestation after passing through many past states, the yogi knows those all past state changes simultaneously in one moment, by the knowledge 'born-of-discrimination'. For example, in the case of a jar (made from mud), first of all, earth = mud, change into the form of sod, by which the jar came into manifestation; and this jar will become break down into pieces in the future and which will again change in the form of mud again. In the same way, condition changes do take place with every moment from the time of its manifestation, and it becomes old as compared to every previous moment. Yogi on the basis of this knowledge 'born-of-discrimination', is able to know all the changes of Jar simultaneously in one moment.
On the other hand, if a yogi is able to perform Sanyama on more than one object at a time, then simultaneous knowledge of all such objects can be accepted. Since the mind has the capacity to get related to one object at a time, so, only one object will be available for Sanyama at a moment, hence simultaneous knowledge of many objects is not possible at a moment. However, it is possible that yogis can achieve knowledge of all the stages of the product simultaneously at one moment.
With the above four types of properties, knowledge 'born-of-discrimination' is complete and absolute in itself. Such knowledge starts from the trance-faculty and remains manifested till the state before Ultra-cognitive Trance. Yogi by knowing that - this knowledge, being the result of Illumination Quality, is inferior to that of Soul and hence becomes desireless from it and moves on the path of cognizance of Soul, which is his ultimate target.
