Sutra in English : CLASSES AND STAGES OF LIFE
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Now subjects of classes of men and stages of life are described. It is to be known that the life state of men is one, and it is proved byVedas. Testimonies in this regard are written in the chapter on Cosmology. The verse‘ब्राह्मणोऽस्य मुखमासीद्’“braahmaNo.asya mukhamaasiid” (Yaju31.11) dealing with four classes of men have already been explained in that chapter. Some of the testimonies given in the scriptures ofBraahmaNaandNirukta, for explaining verses ofVedas, on classes of men, are also given here.
Of men, there are four classes – learned, ruler, trader, and service class. As perVedas, there are two classes – (1)Aryaand (2)Dasyu.The testimony in this regard is —‘विजानीह्यार्य्यान्ये च दस्यवो॰’ “vijaaniihyaaryyaanye cha dasyavo...” (Rigveda1.51.8) i.e., GOD advises that – “O Soul! You know two classes of men – (1)Aryai.e., having best qualities and (2)Dasyui.e., having evil nature, etc. such as dacoit. And from the verse‘उत शूद्रे उत आर्ये’“uta shuudre uta aaryye” (Atharvaveda19.62.1) there are two categories i.e., learned, ruler and traders are classified asArya, and service class is termed asAnaarya =one who had not attained knowledge. And from the verse‘असुर्या नाम ते लोका॰’“asuryaa naama te lokaa...” (Yajurveda40.3) there are two categories namelydevaandasurai.e., learned and foolish. And war between these two is termed a “war of devasura”. The classification of learned, ruler, trader, and service is done on the basis of the acts of men.
varNo vRRINoteH.Nirukta2.3
(varNo...) The word ‘varNa’ = class means ‘one to be chosen’ or ‘worthy of choice’, or ‘that to which one is appointed or selected with due regard to one’s qualities and actions’.

Shatapatha5.1.1
(brahma hi braahmaNaH) That man is entitled to the position of learned (first class, termed as ‘BraahmaNa’) who is endowed with knowledge ofVedas, devoted to the Supreme Lord, and possesses noble qualities of high learning. (kShatram.n hiindraH) Similarly, that man deserves to be a warrior (second class, termed as ‘kShatriya’) who is glorious, illustrious, and devoted to the protection of subjects in virtue of his ability to destroy enemies and ready to fight; (raajanyaH) such type of men become rulers.

iShavo vai didyavaH.Shatapatha5.4.4
The two arms of the second class of ruler and/or warrior are (1) (mitraaH) give happiness to all, (2) (varuNaH) and possess excellent qualities; (vaa) or (viiryyam) prowess and physical valor (raajanyasya) are two arms of a ruler or warrior. (apaam rasaH) The strength of a ruler grows by conferring happiness and delight on people. (iShavaH) The arrows = weapons and missiles of a ruler (didyavaH) should always shine.
The stages of life are also four-fold – (1) Studentship (=brahmacharya), (2) Householder (=gRRIhastha), (3) Forest-dweller (=vaanaprastha), and (4) Renunciation of the world (=sannyaasa). Out of these, from the age of five or eight years up till forty-eight years, is the time of studentship. Its division will be advised later in five great duties. During the stage of studentship = celibacy, one should acquire true knowledge and education. During the stage of a householder, one should have the best conduct, improve the acquisition of the best things, and true education to children. In the life of a forest-dweller, one should have a solitary life, communion with GOD, and ponder over the purpose of knowledge. During the stage of renunciation, one should strive to attain the highest bliss of emancipation of the Supreme Lord and minister to the happiness of all by preaching true knowledge. In this way, by four stages of life, one should attain four ends of human life i.e., virtue = righteousness, wealth, desires, and emancipation. Out of these, during the stage of studentship, one should duly acquire noble qualities of real knowledge and good education. The stage of studentship is the base of all stages. By proper reformation of this stage, all other stages of life become easy; and on its turning bad, all stages of life get destroyed.
The following are pieces of evidence for life of studentship —

Atharvaveda11.5.3
(aachaarya upa...) The first birth of man is one, which takes place from the womb of a mother. The second is wherein the preceptor is the father and the education is the mother. One who does not have a second birth does not achieve a human-ship. Therefore all men should acquire this. When a child goes near to preceptor at the age of eight, then is named as student = celibate (=brahmachaariorbrahmachaariNii), since they get ready for knowledge ofVedasand GOD.
The preceptor = imparter of knowledge and learning, having initiated a celibate = student, invests him with sacred thread (=yagyopavita), instructs him/her to remain firm in his vows, and bears him, as it were, in his womb-like a fetus for three days and three nights i.e., give him all kinds of directions and explain him the proper procedure of the study. When he attains all learnings and becomes a scholar and is regarded as born of knowledge. Then on the fourth day, glorious learned assembles to see him. They joyfully honor and praise him by saying – “Due to our good fortune and favor of the Supreme Lord, you have become learned amongst us for the benefit of entire humanity”.

(iyam samit...) With fuel for benevolent act (=agnihotra), celibate = student renders earth, shining region, and middling region and renders all beings dwelling in these regions, happy with his learning and fire-oblations. (lokaam...) He fills with joy all living beings by (samidhaa) benevolent acts (=agnihotra), (mekhalayaa) symbols of celibate life, (shrameNa) his hard work, (tapasaa) as well as righteous conduct, teaching, and preaching.

(puurvo jaato brahma...) The word celibate =brahmachaariis derived from the root ‘char’ to move by adding the noun ‘Brahma’. Thus it means one who moves in the study ofVedasis a celibate; (dharmam vasaanaH) performs severest austerities, knowsVedasand GOD, is first in four stages of life (in graded order), and is a glory to other stages. (tapasaH) By performance of righteousness, (udatiShThat) he excels all and remains firm in good conduct. For this reason, (devaaH) all learned people praise him (brahma jyeShTham) who surpasses all by his learning and knowledge and who regards GOD as greatest of all, (amRRItena) is endowed with Supreme Bliss and salvation, (braahmaNam) because of his knowledge of GOD, and (jaatam) has become a well-known scholar ofVedas.

Atharvaveda11.5.17
(brahmacharyyeNa) By practicing celibacy, a King protects the kingdom i.e., has a special ability to protect subjects. The preceptor also by acquiring knowledge through the performance of celibacy, is able to seek celibates as his pupils, and not otherwise. In this regard, there is a testimony ofNirukta1.4 —
aachaaryyaH kasmaadaachaaram graahayatyaachinoty-arthaanaachinoti buddhimiti vaa.
i.e., a preceptor is so, called because he forms character, or collects righteousness, or cultivates understanding.

Atharvaveda11.5.18
(brahmacharyyeNa) Similarly, by observing celibacy, a maiden when attains her youth, obtains a young man to be her wedded husband of similar qualities, and not otherwise. She cannot wed earlier nor with a person of dissimilar qualities. The words ‘ox’ and ‘horse’ denote all-mighty animals. Such animals and a horse desire to defeat their adversaries, other animals, in battle through celibacy. It is, therefore, clear that all men must practice celibacy.
brahmacharyyeNa tapasaa devaa mRRItyumupaaghnata.
indro ha brahmacharyyeNa devebhyaH sva raabharat.Atharvaveda11.5.19
(brahmacharyyeNa tapasaa devaa) The learned, by the power of celibacy, study ofVedas, knowledge of Supreme Lord, purificatory acts, and performance of righteousness overcome pains on account of birth and death, but not otherwise. As by observing celibacy, i.e., by obeying laws prescribed by GOD verily, the Sun is able to illuminate and provide happiness to organs of senses, similarly, no one can rightly achieve happiness in learning without celibacy.
Therefore, all three stages of human life i.e., of house-holder, etc. can be full of pleasure only if these are preceded by observance of celibacy. Otherwise, there can be no branches, in the absence of a root. Strong trunks, fruits, flowers, shade, etc. come into being only when the root is there.
STAGE OF A HOUSE-HOLDER
The undermentioned verses refer to stage of house-holder’s life.

Yajurveda3.45
It is proper for a householder when he has learned all sciences, then marry a lady with similar qualities, and both should follow the rules of married life, which are already explained in chapters on ‘Marriage’ and ‘Appointment for progeny’. Whatever is particular now is explained — (yad graame) may all our righteous deeds, which we have performed as house-holder, residing in village (or cities) e.g. dissemination of knowledge, procreation of off-springs, promulgation of noble social order and other acts, resulting in universal benefit; (yadaraNye) during stage of forest-dweller e.g. realization of GOD, a study of scriptures, performance of purificatory acts; (yatsabhaayaam) acts resulting in benefit of society and (yadindriye) good acts of senses and mind, be for attainment of GOD and emancipation. (yadenashchakRRImaa...) We should remain away from vice and evil acts and thoughts, through mind, speech, and action of body, and be beneficial for all.

nihaaram cha haraasi me nihaaram niharaaNi te svaahaa.Yajurveda3.50
(dehi me) GOD ordains that performing as per social rules is a cause of development for householders. We should give and take things, as per truthful deeds. You should speak to one another in the following manners – (ni me dhehi ni te dadhe) ‘Give me knowledge, wealth, etc. for my benefit; I shall also give you in return. Assume for me, good nature, liberality, and good manners, I shall also treat you in the same way. Deal with me righteously in trade i.e., sale, purchase, and gift, etc., and I shall also deal with you similarly. The word ‘svaahaa’ denotes that we should all associate with one another in speaking truth, believing truth, acting as per truth, and listening to truthful speech. May all our transactions and dealings be guided by truth.
In this way, dealings of house-holders be accomplished. Since those who act for benefit of all, they all prosper.

(upahuutaa iha...) O Supreme Lord! May we have, with Your grace, an abundance of domestic animals i.e., cows, etc., land, sense-organs (power of), knowledge, light, and pleasure in our life as house-holder. (ajaavayaH) May sheep and goats be favorable to us. (atho annasya kii...) In addition to aforesaid objects, may we have, in our residence, the sweetest juices of edible things. (kShemaaya vaH shaantyai...) (There is a change of person here – the second person for the third person. Addressing objects it is stated) O you Objects! i.e., those which have been mentioned above, we acquire you for my protection and pleasure. By obtaining you, may we (shivamshagmam) attain the joys of this world and the bliss of emancipation. According toNighanTu, the word ‘sham’ is a synonym of ‘pada’ and is the name of worldly happiness. May all men living a life of house-holder, promote two-fold happiness which had been referred to above for the benefit of others also.
STAGE OF FOREST DWELLERS

(trayo dharma...) There are three branches of righteousness in all stages of life, i.e., study, performance of rituals (benevolent acts), and charity (giving the best qualities of education, etc.). In the first stage of celibacy, the celibate resides with a preceptor at his abode for practicing austerities, attaining a good education, and performing righteousness. The second stage is the life of the householder. In the third stage as a forest-dweller, even at the cost of his discomforts, pondering always in his heart and retiring in a solitary place, he should determine what truth is and what is false. All these three stages of life i.e., celibacy, etc., are places of merits, and abodes of happiness. These are given names of ‘stages’ (aashramaa) since meritorious acts are performed in these stages.
There are three branches of righteousness — (1) study of true sciences; (2)Yajna= performing of best deeds; (3) charity i.e., giving best qualities of knowledge, etc. The first is austerity i.e., study of true science asVedas; the second is study while dwelling in the house of a preceptor; the third is knowledge of all science by pondering on GOD. Having all types of prosperity, through these acts, is the duty of men. (Meaning given inHindi).
STAGE OF RENUNCIATION
Having acquired knowledge and determined GOD and righteousness in the life stage of celibacy, then having put to practice what he had learned and thus developing his knowledge in the life stage of house-holder, and then retiring to a lonely place in the forest and determining conduct and things are right and what is wrong, and finalizing duties of forest-dweller, he should renounce the world and become a renunciator (Sannyaasii).
There are three options for the stage of renunciation. The first option is that – after completing the stage of celibacy, one should become a householder, after the stage of a householder, he should become a forest dweller, and thus a forest-dweller should become a renunciator. The second option is that – one should renounce the world on the day when he becomes desireless from the world, he may enter the stage of renunciation directly from the stage of house-holder, without entering the stage of forest-dweller. The third option is that one may become a renunciator directly from the stage of celibacy, i.e., having duly completed the stage of celibate, one may directly enter the stage of renunciator without going through the stages of house-holder and forest-dweller. An option is ordained regarding all stages except the stage of celibacy, but the practice of the stage of celibacy is unavoidable and is essential for everyone. Since, without the stage of celibacy, no other stage is possible.

(brahmasa.nstha...) The fourth i.e., renunciator, who stands firm in GOD, (amRRItatvam eti) attains immortality i.e., Supreme Bliss.

(tametam vedaa...) Members of all stages of life, particularly renunciator, desire to know the Supreme Lord, Lord of all Creatures, through study, preaching, and listening toVedas, and by means of performing according toVedicteachings. (brahmacharyeNa...) A man becomes a thinker (=Muni) by knowing GOD, practicing celibacy, doing austerities, performing righteousness, devotion, intense love, benevolent acts, imperishable knowledge, and performing virtuous deeds. The renunciator renounces the world with a keen desire to realize GOD, who is most worthy to be seen. (etada brahma...) The noblest intellectuals (=braahmaNa), who know GOD, are free from all doubts, endowed with perfect knowledge, expellers of doubts of others, learned and aspire to know GOD, but do not desire to have children and householders life. (te ha sma...) The particle ‘ha’ is here in the sense of ‘clearness’ and ‘sma’ means full of delight. They, with delightfully shining faces, say “What should we do with children?” i.e., we have nothing to do with them. The sole object of our desire is the most Beautiful GOD.
Thus in this way, (vyutthaaya) renouncing (putraiShaNaayaashcha) desire to beget children, (vittaiShaNaayaashcha) desire and efforts for gaining material wealth, and (lokaiShaNaayaashcha) desire for public fame, honor, and aversion from scandal, (bhikShaacharyam cha...) they live on alms i.e., enter the stage of renunciator. Since a man who possesses the desire to beget children, certainly has a desire for worldly wealth; and who has a desire for wealth, he certainly has a desire for public honor; and a person who has a desire for public fame and honor has two other desires also i.e., begetting children and acquiring wealth. But a man who desires to attain salvation and GOD is free from all these three desires. No wealth of this world can ever be equal to the wealth of bliss of the Supreme Lord. One who is established in GOD has no more liking for all worldly fame and honor. Being compassionate to mankind, he promotes happiness in this world by preaching truth. His main object is universal benevolence and the establishment of truth.
praajaapatyaamiShTim niruupya tasyaam sarvavedasam hutvaa braahmaNaH pravrajed.Shatapath.
(praajaapatyaa...) The renunciator, having performed acts in honor of GOD (Prajapati), and fully ascertained all this in his heart, (sarvavedasam...) burns his sacred thread and lock of hair, and mind absorbed in deep thought and meditation, renounces the world and enters the stage of renunciation.
Only perfectly learned persons, free from all attachments and aversions, and whose thoughts are always for the well-being of mankind, are entitled to become a renunciator; not men who are of shallow learning and knowledge. For renunciator, regulation of out-breathing and in-breathing is their Fire-oblation (=agnihotra), keeping away mind and senses from defects = sins, and performance of truth and righteousness is also his Fire-oblation. But the performance of Fire-oblation is the duty of all men in the previous three stages of life; whatever is in the form of the performance of external activity, merely is not the duty of the renunciator. Preaching truth is his ‘Duty towards GOD’ (=brahma-yajna); communion with the Supreme Lord is his ‘Fire-oblation’ (=deva-yajna); reverence to men of knowledge is his ‘Duty towards intellects’ (=pitRRI-yajna); spreading knowledge among ignorant, compassion and non-injury to all living-beings is his ‘Duty towards living beings(=bhuta-yajna); and wandering about for well-being of mankind, pridelessness, honoring all men by preaching truth is his ‘Duty towards guests’ (=atithi-yajna). Hence, the Five Great Duties, as described above, consist of knowledge and performance of righteousness. But the worship of the Supreme Lord, who is one without a second, and possessed of attributes as Almighty, etc., and performance of righteousness are common duties of all members of all stages.

MuNDakopaniShada3.1.10
(vishuddhasattvaH) As a man with a pure mind, (jaayate) attains (tam tam lokam taa.nshcha kaamaan) all those places and desires which (kaamayate yaa.nshcha kaamaan) he cherished for himself, and (yam yam lokam manasaa) other places in his mind. Therefore, (bhuutikaamaH) he who is desirous of glory and welfare, (aatmaj~nam) should always respect and honor the renunciator who knows self and the Supreme Lord. By their association and company and by honoring them alone, a man can obtain blissful worlds and all desires. No one should show respect to hypocrites who preach falsehood and those whose main aim is their self-interest because showing respect and regard to them serves no purpose and it results in misery and suffering.
These four stages are described as perVedasand prudent based on reasoning. Since all men should spend their first stage of life learning true sciences; and after attaining knowledge, one should go for the house-holder stage for the well-being of the world. And for true knowledge and well-being of the world, one should have proper knowledge of GOD, who is the Supreme Lord of the whole world while sitting in a solitary place, and advise all persons for all good conducts. And one should also go for the stage of renunciation to remove all doubts of people and get true sciences ascertained. Without this, it is very difficult to end partiality completely.
