Preface to Sutra in English : FIGURES OF SPEECH
Sutra in English : FIGURES OF SPEECH
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : Now we shall describe briefly various figures of speech. First of all, we proceed to explain a figure of speech called ‘Simile’ (=upamaa). A complete Simile is one when its four constituents viz. subject of comparison (=upameya), the object of comparison (=upamaan), a word expressing Simile, and common property, are fully expressed, e.g.
sa naH piteva suunave.agne suupaayano bhava.Rigveda1.1.9.
The other variety of similes is the Elliptical Simile (=lupta-upamaa) which is of eight kinds when any one or more of the above elements are unexpressed. These are—
1.vaachaka-luptai.e., in which word implying comparison is left unexpressed, e.g.bhiimabaliii.e., brave likeBhiima. (Here word ‘iva’ signifying comparison is left out.)
2.dharma-luptai.e., in which common property is unexpressed, e.g.kamalanetraH. (Here word showing a common quality of beauty is omitted.)
3.dharma-vaachaka-luptai.e., in which common quality and word denoting Simile are left-out, e.g.purusHa-vyaaghraH. (Here words showing comparison and common property are omitted.)
4.vaachakaouameya-luptai.e., in which words indicating comparison and object of comparison are elided, e.g.vidyayaa paNditaayante. (Here words indicating comparison and object of comparison are not expressed).
5.upamaana-luptai.e., in which subject of comparison is left out.
6.vaachakopamaan-luptai.e., in which word showing comparison and the subject of comparison is left out.
7.dharma-upamaana-luptai.e., in which reason and subject of comparison are left out.
8.dharma-upamaana-vaachaka-luptai.e., in which three elements reason, subject, and word expressing comparison are left out.
The example for these four kinds of Simile iskaakataaliiyo gurushiShyasamaagamaH, i.e., the meeting of preceptor and pupil is unexpected like that of a crow and palm fruit.
Now figure of speech called metaphor (=rupaka) is taken. In this, the object of Simile is made as a subject of Simile and no difference is identified between them or to say that there is a complete identification between them. With reference to a greater or lesser or equal degree of identification, it is of six types —
1.adhika-abheda-rupakai.e., a complete or greater degree of identification, e.g.ayam hi savitaa saakShaadyena dhvaantam vinaashyate, i.e., He is verily the sun as he expels darkness, i.e., He is complete in knowledge.
2.nyuna-abheda-rupakai.e., lesser degree of non-difference, e.g.ayam patanjaliH saakShaadbhaaShyasya kRRItinaa vinaai.e., He is verilyPatanjalibut is not author ofMahaabhaaShya.
3.anubhaya-abheda-rupakai.e., in which there is a distinction without a difference, e.g.iishaH prajaamavatyadya sviikRRItya samaniititaami.e., king or GOD protects people resorting to impartiality.
4.adhikataadruupya-rupakai.e., higher degree of identification, e.g.vidyaanande hi sampraapte raajyaanandena kim tadaai.e., no need of regal joys when bliss of knowledge is secured.
5.nyuunataaadruupya-rupakai.e., deficient identification, e.g.saadhviiyam sukhadaa niitirasuuryyaprabhavaa mataa, i.e., this fair statesmanship brings all joys but it has no origin from sun.
6.anubhyataadruupya-rupakai.e., an identification which is neither complete nor incomplete, e.g.ayam ghanaavRRItaatsuuryyaadvidyaasuuryyo vibhajyate, i.e., as the sun is covered by clouds, let this sun of knowledge shine.
The figure of speech called Paronomasia (=shleShaH) is that in which such words are used as capable of expressing more than one meaning. It is of three kinds—
- prakRRItaaneka-viShayaHi.e., where all meanings expressed are applicable in context, e.g.navakambalo.ayam manuShyaH, i.e., this man has ‘nava’ (means new or nine) blankets. Here word ‘nava’ means either new or nine, and both meanings are relevant in context.
Alsoshveto dhaavatii.e., it may mean either a white man runs or a dog runs from here;ala.mbusaanaam yaataai.e., it may mean either carrier of straw is strong or carrier of gourds; and also ‘agnimiide’ where the word ‘agni’ may mean GOD or fire.
2.aprakRRItaaneka-viShayaHi.e., where only one meaning is applicable in context, e.g.hariNaa tvadbalam tulyam kRRItinaa hitashaktinaa, i.e., it may mean that either your prowess is equal to that of a powerful lion or that your prowess is equal to that of Omnipotent GOD, as word ‘hari’ expresses both meanings – GOD and lion.
3.prakRRItaaprakRRItaaneka-viShayaHe.g.uchcharabhuuriyaanaaDhyaH shushubhe vaahiniipatiH, i.e., here ‘vaahiniipati’ may mean lord of armies or lord of rivers.
In this way, there are many other figures of speech. All of them could not be mentioned here. Those will be explained, in our commentary, wherever they occur.

Rigveda1.89.10
In this verse, the word ‘aditiH’ is used to mean shining upper region and many others, etc. In commentary also we shall take the word ‘aditiH’ in the same sense. The other meanings of this word are — shining upper region, intermediate region, mother, father, son, worldly deities, etc. We shall not cite this verse everywhere, we have thought it proper to quote it here once and for all.
