Meaning in English : (yogaH) Yoga (uddiShTaH) has been described (samaahita-chittasya) for the person whose mind is concentrated. (katham) How may (vyutthitachittaH) one with the outgoing state of mind i.e., whose mind is in either disturbed, stupefied, or distracted state, can (api) also (yoga-yuktaH syaat) perform Yoga i.e., move towards concentration, (etat aarabhyate iti) is explained in this chapter:—
Sutra in English : tapaHsvaadhyaayeshvarapraNidhaanaani kriyaayogaH.1.
Meaning in English : (tapaH) Purificatory action, (svaadhyaaya) study and (iishvara-praNidhaanaani) devotion to GOD is (kriyaa-yogaH) "Yoga of Action".
Vyaasa Commentary in English : naatapasvino yogaH siddhyati. anaadikarmakleshavaasanaachitraa pratyupasthitaviShayajaalaa chaashuddhirnaantareNa tapaH sambhedam-aapadyata iti tapasa upaadaanam. tachcha chittaprasaadanam-abaadhamaanamanenaa.a.asevyamiti manyate. svaadhyaayaH praNavaadi-pavitraaNaam japo mokShashaastraadhyayanam vaa. iishvarapraNidhaanam sarvakriyaaNaam paramaguraavarpaNam tatphalasa.mnyaaso vaa.
Meaning In English : (yogaH) Yoga (na siddhyati) cannot be attained (atapasvinaH) by one who does not perform purificatory actions. (ashuddhiH) The impurity which is (anaadi-karma-klesha-vaasanaa-chitraa) in mind colored by potencies = impressions of beginning-less vice-virtue actions and afflictions (cha) and (pratyupasthita-viShayajaalaa) presenting the network of external enjoyable, which are the cause of bondage, that (na aapadyate) cannot be (sambhedam) destroyed (tapaH antareNa) without performing purificatory action. (iti) For this reason (tapasaH) purificatory action (upaadaanam) has been prescribed as the first mean. (cha) And (tat) that purificatory action (iti manyate) is considered as action (aasevyam) worth performing (anena) by a devotee (chitta-prasaadanam) as it purifies the mind, and (abaadhamaanam) not becoming a hindrance for it.
(svaadhyaayaH) The study is (japaH) utterance of (praNavaadi-pavitraaNaam) "AUM", the name of GOD, and other purifying verses (vaa) and (kokSha-shaastra-adhyayanam) reading and understanding the scriptures which describe and advise the absolute freedom.
(iishvara-praNidhaanam) Devotion to GOD i.e., making HIM the motive of all actions is (arpaNam) dedicating (sarva-kriyaaNaam) of all the actions to (paramagurau) the Supreme Teacher - GOD (vaa) and (tat phala-sa.nnyaasaH) renunciation of their fruits.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the first chapter, we have explained the means of performing yoga - devotion to GOD by practice, desirelessness, faith, energy, memory, trance, discernment, etc., and with the result achievement of Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trances and thereby cognizance of gross and subtle objects, and cognizance of Soul and GOD resulting in the achievement of absolute freedom.
In the commentary to aphorism 1.1 Seer Vyaasa said — "tatra vikShipte chetasi vikShepa-upasarjaniibhuutaH samaadhiH na yogapakShe varttate." i.e., the trance in the distracted state of mind does not fall under the category of Yoga, because of unsteadiness appearing in close sequence in the mind, due to disturbing energy. In comparison to the one-pointed state of mind, the disturbed, stupefied, and distracted states of mind are known as the outgoing state of mind. How will a man, with an outgoing state of mind, be able to move on the path of Yoga? For this Seer Patanjali had advised three means in the form of "Yoga of Action". A person with an outgoing state of mind can move on the path of Yoga by performing "Purificatory Action", "Study" and "Devotion to GOD" in his daily life. These three are the last three Observances of accessories of Yoga.
Purificatory Action:- While advising purificatory action Seer Vyaasa said that a person who does not perform "Purificatory Action" or is not able to perform it, cannot attain any success on the path of Yoga. In the eternal life-cycle of the Soul, the mind is colored by potencies of virtue-vice acts performed and afflictions during this beginning-less life-cycle; and impurities of such mind present the network of external enjoyments only in the form of products of Matter, in the present life, with the result the bondage of actions and afflictions and their potencies become more and more complex. Such impurity cannot be destroyed without performing Purificatory Action. It is also said in Manusmriti — "tapasaa kilviSham hanti" (Manu. 12.104), i.e., the devotee destroys the thoughts of evils and afflictions by Purificatory Action.
Now, what is Purificatory Action? For this Seer Vyaasa said in aphorism 2.32 as — "tapo dvandva-sahanam. dvandvaaH cha jighatsaapipaase shiitoshNe sthaanaasane kaaShThamaunaakaaramaune cha. vrataani chaiShaam yathaayogam krichchhri-chaandraayaNa-saantapanaadiini". i.e., Purificatory Action is the endurance of the pairs of opposites = desire to eat and desire to drink, heat and cold, standing and sitting, and absence of speech and absence of facial indication, and performing vows such as fast of Chaandrayaana and Saantaapana. Vows of Krichcha, Chaandraayana, and Saantaapana are explained in the 11th chapter of Manusmriti - i.e., the procedure of Praajaapatya Vow in 11.211; Krichchha Saantapana Vow in 11.212-214; Chaandraayana Vow in 11.216-217.
For what reason the endurance of pairs of opposites are to be performed? For performing vice or for performing acts that are restrained or not prescribed in the scriptures? No. Whatever is prescribed about the Purificatory Action in the Vedic scriptures, performing those acts alone for the endurance of pairs of opposites is Purificatory Action. i.e., —
- Always performing virtue by adopting continence and self-controlled is Purificatory Action. (Light of Truth - Chapter 4)
- ritam tapaH satyam tapaH shrutam tapaH shaantam tapo damastapaH shamas-tapo daanam tapo yajyastapo brahma-bhuuh-bhuvaH-suvaH-brahmaitadupaasvaitat-tapaH. Taittiriiya 10.8.1.
i.e., adopting the reality, accepting the truth, speaking the truth, hearing the Vedic scriptures, controlling one's mind from vicious acts, controlling sense organs from evil acts and diverting to virtue acts, remaining calm by cessation of anger, etc., spreading the pure qualities of true knowledge, etc., performing Yagyas and with the company of intellectuals obtaining the knowledge of all objects like earth, heaven, sun, etc., and by the performance of Yoga, control of breath, worshipping the GOD only, are called Purificatory Action. (Sanskaar-vidhi)
- vedbhyaaso hi viprsya tapaH paramihochyate. (Manu. 2.141)
i.e., certainly the study of Vedas is the highest Purificatory Action for the Braahaman = intellectual in this world.
- aa haiva sa nakhaagrebhyaH paramam tapyate tapaH.
yaH sragvyapi dvijo.adhiite svaadhyaayaH shaktito.anvaham. (Manu. 2.142)
i.e., the intellectual, who has moved into the second phase of life i.e., got married and moved into the family life, studies Vedas with full efforts daily, he is certainly performing Purificatory Action at full strength with his body.
- praaNaayaamaa braahmaNasya trayo.api vidhivat-kritaa.
vyaahrati-praNavaih-yuktaa viGYeyam paramam tapaH. (Manu. 6.70)
i.e., the performance of three types of control of breath (= external, internal, and total restraint) along with the repetition of "AUM" and the seven "bhuuH bhuvaH svaH mahaH janaH tapaH satyam" as per the procedure of scriptures is the highest Purificatory Action of the Braahman = intellectual desiring GOD.
Performance of Purificatory Action as above causes purity, stability, and calmness of mind. As regards the vows, as prescribed above, are to be performed as per the strength of the body only, So, that these should not cause any defect = irregularity in the body and result in disturbance of mind i.e., such vows should not become a hindrance on the path of Yoga.
Study:- For Study, Seer Vyaasa advised for an utterance of the sacred name "AUM", and other purifying verses, reading and understanding the scriptures advising absolute freedom. Repetition of "AUM" is advised by Seer Patanjali in aphorism 1.28, i.e., with the repetition of "AUM" one should ponder on its meaning also. We have already explained this concept in aphorism 1.28. By study, Seer Vyaasa had also advised the study of scriptures advising salvation. Further the word "adhyaaya" from the Sanskrit root "adhipoorvaka i~Ng adhyayane" which also means for the study of self = Soul.
SeerManu had declared the study of Vedas as the best Purificatory Action (Manu. 2.142). Vedas, being the teachings of GOD, are also the scripture of salvation. So, the study of Vedas is the most important part of the study. On understanding the importance of study our ancient seers had attached study with every act of life, as —
ritam cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. satyam cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. tapaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. damaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. shamaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. agnayaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. agnihotram cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. atithayaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. maanuSham cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. prajaa cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. prajanaH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. prajaatiH cha svaadhyaaya-pravachane cha. satyamiti satyavachaa raathiitaraH. tapa iti taponityaH paurushiShTiH. svaadhyaaya-pravachane eveti naako maudgalyaH. taddhi tapastaddhi tapaH. Taittiriiya Aaranyaka 7.9.
(ritam cha) It is proper for human beings that - they should keep worshipping GOD by increasing their knowledge; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (satyam cha) Believe and speak the subjects as these known in yourself after testing through eight types of testimonies like direct cognition etc.; also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (tapaH cha) Remain confirmed in the religion = truth after completing the first phase of life of attaining knowledge by continence; also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (damaH cha) Control one's sense organs from vice and laziness and keep them involved in virtue; also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (shama cha) Keep one's Soul and mind in the performance of virtue; also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (agnayaH cha) From the knowledge of Vedas and material objects fulfill the four targets i.e., virtue, monetary enjoyments, worldly enjoyments, and salvation, and develop various material knowledge; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (agnihotram cha) Make the world happy by purification of water and rainwater by performing Yajyas (in the Fire-oblation); also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (atithayaH cha) Always respect and keep companionship of persons who are truthful, intellectuals, and well-wishers of living beings; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (maanuSham cha) Always do well-being of humanity by proper ruling and control of all types of affairs for the fulfillment of virtue, monetary enjoyments, worldly enjoyments, and salvation; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (prajaa cha) Make your children virtuous and hard-working by proper upbringing, make them intellectual by knowledge; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (prajanaH cha) Perform for bringing up the next generation and always safeguard your child to be born in all ways and by proper feedings and medicines to the mother; also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (prajaatiH cha) Always safeguard the boy and girl child and their mother at the time of birth and afterward; and also keep studying and teaching the Vedas. (Rigvedaadibhaashya-bhuumika - Vedoktadharma-vishaya)
The Seer in the shatapatha braahmaNa had praised the "Study" as —
athaataH svaadhyaaya-prasha.nsaa. priye svaadhyaaya-pravachane bhavato yuktamanaa bhavatyaparaadhiino.aharahararthaan saadhayate sukham svapiti paramachikitsaka aatmano bhavati-indriyasa.nyamaH-chaikaaraamataa cha praGYaavriddhiH-yasholokapakthiH.
ye ha vai ke cha shramaaH. ime dyaavaa-prathivii.aantareNa svaadhyaayo haiva teShaam paramataa kaaShThaa ya evam vidvaant-svaadhyaayamadhiite tasmaat-svaadhyaayo.adhyetavyaH.
yadi ha vaa apyabhyaktaH. alankritaH sahitaH sukhe shayane shayaanaH svaadhyaayamadhiita.aaa haiva sa nakhaagrebhyaH-tapyate ya evam vidvaan svaadhyaayamadhiite tasmaat-svaadhyaayo.adhyetavyaH. shatapatha 11.5.7.1,2,4.
i.e., the Study and teaching of Vedas are worthy wanted activities since by these acts the mind becomes knowledge-full and does not come under the authority of others. By daily performance, one attains virtue, monetary enjoyment, worldly enjoyments, and salvation, lives life peacefully, becomes the physician of his Soul, controls the sense organs, and rests in the bliss of GOD. In this way, trance-cognition increases, and enjoyment / blesses of this world and the next world becomes superior. (1). Whatever vows = purification acts there are between this earth and heaven, "Study" is the best among all such acts. One should perform a "Study of Vedas" for the above reason. (2). Even if the body is with the worldly enjoyments or the person is sleeping with the comforts or is living with comforts i.e., in whatever conditions, and if the person performs "Study of Vedas", then he is performing vows / purificatory acts with the full strength of his body. (4). The main object of the above is that one should "Study" Vedas by any means. For this if one can perform vows, it is good; if one cannot perform vows, cannot leave his house, cannot leave worldly enjoyments, cannot sleep on earth or sleep on a luxurious bed, then also there is no loss, but he must "Study" the Vedas. The study of Vedas should not be avoided under any circumstances, as it is the best purificatory action = vow.
vedopakaraNe chaiva svaadhyaaye chaiva naityake.
naanurodho.astyanadhyaaye homamantreShu chaiva hi. Manu. 2.80.
There is no option for performing the Study of Vedas, performing daily virtuous acts i.e., worshipping of GOD, Yajya (= benevolent act), etc., i.e., these are to be performed under every circumstance.
To show the achievements of "Study", it is said —
sarvaan-parityajedarthan-svaadhyaayasya virodhinaH.
yathaa-tathaa.adhyaapaya.nstu saa hi-asya kritakrityataa. Manu. 4.17.
Whatever is against the "Study" and virtuous acts, should be avoided; keeping the Study of true knowledge in any way is the achievement for the man.
svaadhyaaye chaiva yuktaH syaat-nityamaatmahiteShu cha. Manu. 4.35.
One should always remain involved in the "Study" of Vedas and the improvement of self = Soul.
svaadhyaaye nityayuktaH syaad-daive chaiveha karmaNi. Manu 3.75.
It is required for every person that he should remain involved daily in the "Study" and worshipping of GOD.
svaadhyaayena japaiH-homaih-traividyenejyayaa sutaiH.
mahaayaGYaiH cha yaGYaiH cha braahmeeyam kriyate tanuH. Manu. 2.3.
By Study-teaching, logical thinking, meditating, performing various Yajyas (= benevolent acts), the study of Vedas with meaning, its relation with objects, etc. .... this life-state is made of intellectual.
yathaa yathaa hi puruShaH shaastram samdhigachchhati.
tathaa tathaa vijaanaati viGYaanam chaasya rochate. Manu. 4.20.
As one knows the scriptures in their true meaning, So, the real knowledge increases and one remains interested in that knowledge.
In this way, we see that it is not possible to proceed further on the path of Yoga without the "Study of Vedas".
Devotion to GOD:- The third important means of Yoga of Action is Devotion to GOD. This is not only an important means to achieve the trance for the devotee at a higher stage, but also it is important for beginners on the path of Yoga. Devotion to GOD means that "the devotee should dedicate all his actions to the Supreme Lord and renunciate the wish for their fruits". There is no better means than this to cease any desire, attachment, aversion, greed, etc. from the mind. By Devotion to GOD, the person gets freed from worldly attractions, interests, wants, and afflictions. Whole-hearted Devotion to GOD is possible only when the yogi makes GOD his ultimate target and accepts HIM as his supreme teacher and performs according to the teaching of the GOD as given in Vedas. His devotion to GOD increases in proportion to his performance as per the teaching of GOD and increases of knowledge of GOD in his mind.
When the fruits of actions are not desired, then worldly attractions = attraction of Matter cease; in this way, he also gets rid of duals of pleasure-pain, gain-loss, respect-disrespect, etc. When the GOD becomes supreme lovely, then the desires of the world, earth, and family cease to exist; and when these desires cease to exist, then GOD alone becomes the base and target of life. A detailed explanation of devotion to GOD is given in aphorism 1.23 above
The achievement of Yoga of Action is given in the next aphorism by Seer Patanjali— "Afflictions are attenuated and trance is achieved".
