Sutra in English : samaadhibhaavanaarthaH kleshatanuukaraNaarthashcha.2.
Meaning in English : (samaadhi-bhaavanaarthaH) Bringing about Trance (cha) and (klesha-tanuu-karaNaarthaH) attenuating afflictions.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : sa hyaasevyamaanaH samaadhim bhaavayati kleshaa.mshcha pratanuukaroti. pratanuukRRitaankleshaanprasa.mkhyaanaagninaa dagdhabiijakalpaa-naprasavadharmiNaH kariShyatiiti. teShaam tanuukaraNaatpunaH kleshairaparaamRRiShTaa sattvapuruShaanyataa-maatrakhyaatiH suukShmaa praj~naa samaaptaadhikaaraa pratiprasavaaya kalpiShyata iti.
Meaning In English : (hi) It is certain (saH) that = Yoga of Action, (aasevyamaanaH) which is properly performed, (bhaavayati) brings about (samaadhim) trance, (cha) and (pratanuu-karoti) attenuates (kleshaan) afflictions. The yogi (kariShyati) will make, (pratanuu-kritaan kleshaan) the attenuated afflictions (dagdha-biija-kalpaan) like the burned seeds, (prasa.nkhyaana-agninaa) by the fire of High Intellection, which (aprasava-dharmiNaH iti) will become as characterized by unproductiveness (i.e., these afflictions will not be able to produce its results). Then the mind, (teShaam tanuukaraNaat) after their attenuation, (punaH aparaamriShTaa) will never again be touched (kleshaiH) by afflictions; and having (sukShmaa praj~naa) subtle cognition (sattva-puruSha-anyataa-maatra-khyaatiH) come up to the discrimination of the distinct nature of the Soul and the Matter and its products, (samaapta-adhikaaraa) having the whole of its duty fulfilled (kalpiShyate) become capable of (prati-prasavaaya iti) resolving into its real cause i.e., Matter.
Vedic Commentary in English : By the performance of Yoga of Action, the devotee attains trance, and afflictions present in his mind become attenuated.
What is the meaning of attenuation = weakening of afflictions? Seer Vyaasa in the commentary to 2.4 said — tanutvam-uchyate - pratipakShabhaavanopahataaH kleshaaH tanavo bhavanti i.e., "Tenuity means the afflictions become tenuous on being suppressed by habituation of contraries". And habituation of contraries is defined by Seer Patanjali in 2.34 as "Violence etc. being sins, are of 81 types, result in infinite pain and ignorance; and such type of thought is called habituation of contraries". As for the restraint of violence etc., habituation of contraries is performed, So, one should habituate the contraries for the restraint and cessation of afflictions also. Because of these afflictions, only the Soul is bonded in the life-death-life-cycle in this world and experiencing pains since eternity. Without cessation of these afflictions, and without having discriminative knowledge, one cannot achieve salvation.
As per Bhoja also, the meaning of tenuity is stoppage of functioning and causes of afflictions. Nescience is the cause of the other four afflictions namely Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death (Ref Yoga 2.4). SeerKanaada in his VaisheShik Philosophy said - "defects of organs and defects of residual potencies are the cause of nescience = false knowledge" (VaisheShika 9.2.10). Similarly performing against the teaching of Vedas i.e., the performance of vice, and having a company of wrong-doers are the causes of nescience. As per SeerGautama in Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.2 - "result of nescience is the generation of defects; the result of defects is involvement in right-wrong acts, the result of these acts is rebirth; and its ultimate result is pain"; hence pain is the ultimate result of nescience.
And if this nescience is not destroyed, then what? On this SeerYamaa said to Nachiketa in Katha-UpaniShada 2.5 —
avidyaayaamantare varttamaanaaH svayandhiiraaH paNditammanyamaanaaH. dandramyamaaNaaH pariyanti muuDhaa andhenaiva niiyamaanaa yathaa.andhaaH.
i.e., the person in the darkness of nescience, thinks that “I know the scriptures and I am a logical thinker”, and in this way believes himself as intellectual, So, moves on the path of wrong = vice, with a distracted mind, gets involved in illusion, and having the company of a person who is affected by nescience, moves like the blind man and get pains. Hence the person who himself is attached to nescience or has the company of a person who is involved in nescience, both fell into the ocean of pains.
By the performance of Yoga of Action = Purificatory Action, Study, and Devotion to GOD, all afflictions are weakened. Purificatory Action is the performance of virtue, the performance of truth by mind, speech, and action, the bearing of pain-pleasure, gain-loss, respect-disrespect, etc. Hence by the performance of Purificatory Action when the target of the devotee becomes truth, then the false knowledge = nescience gets automatically weakened. Seer Patanjali also said that the result of Purificatory Action is the removal of impurities and defects in the mind. (Yoga 2.43).
Study means the study of Vedas, repetition of "AUM" and other sacred hymns. So, by the study of Vedas and Vedic literature, the devotee obtains the true knowledge of GOD, Soul, and Matter; with the result, the false knowledge = nescience gets destroyed.
Similarly, by the performance of Devotion to GOD, the defects of attachment, aversion, greed, egoism, etc. of the devotee are removed. With a result, their cause (= nescience) also gets weakened. When the devotee is able to accomplish Devotion to GOD in full strength, then there remains no room for nescience, etc. in his mind.
Apart from the weakening of nescience etc., by the performance of three accessories of Yoga of Action, with the dominance of Illumination Quality in the mind of the devotee, there is the beginning of concentration level in his mind, and with the result, he achieves Cognitive Trance at a higher stage. Even as per Seer Patanjali in 2.45, achievement of trance is the result of Devotion to GOD.
At this stage, the yogi makes these attenuated afflictions like the burnt-up seed by the discriminative knowledge of Soul and Matter. In such a state these afflictions, like the burnt-up seeds, are not able to perform their functioning i.e., do not result in defects and virtue-vice acts. In this way, on becoming like burnt-up seeds of these afflictions, Yogi gets the trance-consciousness, which is not touched by the afflictions, which gives him the cognizance of subtle objects, Soul and GOD. Such mind (= with trance-cognition), stops the authority of Qualities i.e., stoppage of functioning of Qualities, having fulfilled his duty of providing salvation to the Soul, become capable of resolving into its real cause = i.e., Matter. As a result, the Soul gets freedom from the vicious life-cycle and achieves salvation.
