Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 36
In English:
Component Word : satyapratiShThaayaam kriyaaphalaashrayatvam.
Sutra in English : satyapratiShThaayaa.m kriyaaphalaashrayatvam.36.
Meaning in English : (satya-pratiShThaayaam) On the establishment of veracity in mind, speech, and acts, (kriyaaphala-aashrayatvam) the actions of this Yogi become fruitful.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The result of truthfulness is — that when the person, on determination, believes in truth, speaks the truth, and acts as per truth only, then whichever deserving work he performs or wishes to perform, becomes fruitful. (Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : dhaarmiko bhuuyaa iti bhavati dhaarmikaH. svargam praapnuhiiti svargam praapnoti. amoghaasya vaagbhavati.
Meaning In English : When such a yogi says to another person (dhaarmikaH bhuuyaaH iti) "Be virtuous", then that person (dhaarmikaH bhavati) becomes virtuous. And if he says (svargam praapnuhi iti) achieve pleasure = heaven, then that person (svargam praapnoti) attains the state of heaven = pleasure. Thus (vaak) speech (asya) of this yogi (bhavati) becomes (amoghaa) effective = fruitful.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism result of truthfulness is explained. The Yogi who accomplishes truthfulness in mind, and speech, and acts in all ways, at all times, without any contraries, his speech becomes fruitful. Seer Vyaasa said that if such Yogi says to anybody "Be virtuous", then that person becomes virtuous by the effect of such speech of Yogi. In the same way, if he says "achieve pleasure = heaven", then that person attains the state of heaven = pleasure-ness.
The conception of fruitfulness is also given in the Vedas —
— Those who perform as per truth only, an accomplishment of their wish is not hindered in any way. (Rigveda 6.16.18 - Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
— Those who speak the truth, act according to the truth, and believe in truth, accomplish all their wishes and make other people intelligent. (Rigveda 7.43.4 - Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
So, the conception of Vedas, i.e., the accomplishment of the wishes of Yogi whose conduct is based on truth, is said as fruitfulness in this aphorism.
But this has to be considered in this regard whether merely by the words of a Yogi, can anybody become virtuous? Or can any vice-doer attain pleasure, merely by the words of Yogi? To what extent such a conception is correct? As per the epic of Mahabharata, Seer Vyaasa and Lord Krishna who were great Yogi of their times had explained the worst results of war and showed the fear of disaster to Dhritraastra and Duryodhana, but they had not become virtuous, and with the result fearful destruction took place in the war. Were the Seer Vyaasa and Lord Krishana not performing truthfulness? Accepting this will be contumacy!!!
In the same way, there is the advice of performing truthfulness to the Souls for their well-being, by the Supreme Lord GOD in the Vedas; and HE even gives the indication of virtue-ness / vice-ness in the heart of every human being on having the thought of any act; whether all person become virtuous even after such advise and indication? Only those persons who read, understand, and perform according to the advice as given in Vedas, become virtuous, not others. So, one who does not perform, on account of Nescience, vicious potencies, and ill-association, according to the advice of Yogi, cannot become virtuous and attain pleasure.
So, while writing on this aphorism Swami Dayanand wrote that whatever deserving work he performs or wishes to perform, those become fruitful. So, here whatever works can be accomplished those only get accomplished. So, Yogi will say "be virtuous" to such persons where there will be a possibility of becoming virtuous.
The person performing as per acts prescribed in the Vedic scriptures gets pleasure as a fruit of his acts; but the Yogi receives pleasures in the present as well as future lives on account of practicing truth by mind, speech, and body at all times. The vow of truthfulness is said as the best vow in the Vedas. As in his commentary to Yajurveda 1.5, Swami Dayanand wrote — "GOD has prescribed the virtue to be performed by the human beings which is justified, tested and truth and bring well being to alls and is a mean of all pleasures in this world and salvation, this alone is to be practiced."
In Vedas, the fruits of the practice of truthfulness are described as —
— The Yogi who practices truthfulness and makes the people fearless, attains intelligence and becomes pleasure-full by giving away vice and illusion (Rigveda 6.3.2)
— The devotee receives the bliss of GOD by performing truthfulness. (Saamaveda 1395)
— GOD gets cognized in the hearth which is full of truth. (Saamaveda 54)
The Seer of Mundaka-upniShada declares this in the following way —
satyena labhyastapasaa hi-eSha aatmaa samyag-GYaanena brahmacharyeNa nityam. (Mundaka UpaniShada 3.1.5) i.e., GOD is cognized by the regular practice of truth, purificatory action, true knowledge, and continence.
So, the Yogi receives all types of worldly and salvation pleasures through the performance of truthfulness.
