Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 38
In English:
Component Word : brahmacharyapratiShThaayaam viiryalaabhaH.
Sutra in English : brahmacharyapratiShThaayaa.m viiryalaabhaH.38.
Meaning in English : (brahmacharya-pratiShThaayaam) On the establishment of continence in mind, speech, and acts (viirya-laabhaH) physical and mental vigor and strength of yogi increase.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : Performance of continence is — when one does not marry in childhood, control the sex organ, keeps studying, and teaching of Vedas, controls sexuality even after marriage (i.e., perform sex in order to have children, not for merely physical pleasure), and abandon adultery in mind, speech and acts with the women other than a wife; then vigor and power increase in two ways — one of body and other of mind. With the increase of these, a person lives with much pleasure.
(Rigvedaadibhashyabhuumika - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : yasya laabhaadapratighaanguNaanutkarShayati. siddhashcha vineyeShu j~naanamaadhaatum samartho bhavatiiti.
Meaning In English : (laabhaat) On attainment of (yasya) vigor = power, yogi (utkarShayati) increases (guNaan) his qualities, (apratighaan) without any obstructions. (cha) And (siddhaH) having attained the power, he (bhavati) becomes (samarthaH iti) capable of (aadhaatum) imparting (j~naanam) knowledge (vineyeShu) to the learners.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism result of continence is explained. The Yogi who accomplishes continence in mind, speech, and acts in all ways, at all times, without any contraries, his physical and mental vigor, and strength increase. The yogi with the vow of continence increases his virtuous properties without any obstruction and makes them superior. In fact, the accumulated serum in the body increases the subtlety of the mind, and the same serum works as an instrument to achieve the subtlest knowledge of GOD.
The person who does not perform continence becomes powerless in body and mind — "he, in whose body the reproductive element is nor preserved, becomes impotent, void of good qualities, and suffers from spermatorrhoea and such like diseases. He is, in fact, a ruined man, through loss of health, strength, intellect, courage, pluck, energy, patience, and such other good qualities." (Light of Truth - Chapter 2). On the other hand, various benefits of continence are said to —
1. "Those who do not stop performing the vow of continence, they become free from diseases and attain virtue, wealth, enjoyment and salvation." (Light of Truth - Chapter 3).
2. The result of life-long continence is explained as —
evam charati yo vipro brahmacharyamaviplutaH.
sa gachchhatyuttamasthanam na chehaajaayate punaH. (Manusmriti 2.224)
The intellectual who performs the vow of continence throughout the lifetime attains the best place i.e., salvation, and does not take birth in this world again i.e., gets freed from the stream of life and death.
3. Attainment of long life also takes place, by achieving physical strength —
"Those who attain knowledge with continence in a virtuous way in the first phase of life, ........ and perform the virtuous deeds as above, they enjoy pleasure by living long life within the intellectuals, the make others enjoy pleasures." (Yajurveda 34.51 - Swami Dayanand)
"Those who attain knowledge from the intellectuals by performing the vow of continence for a long time, and perform accordingly, they are never short-lived." (Yajurveda 34.52 - Swami Dayanand)
In this regard, chapter 11.5 of Atharvaveda is to be studied which is on this subject. In this chapter, the benefits of continence are explained in detail. The gist of this chapter is that Yogi can achieve the ability to cognize GOD by performing continence, not otherwise. Such Yogi alone is capable of cognizing the GOD and achieving salvation.
Another benefit of the performance of a vow of continence is that such a devotee is capable of imparting his knowledge to the learners. So, the Yogi who performs continence is totally capable to attain true knowledge and impart it to others.
