Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 39
In English:
Component Word : aparigrahasthairye janmakathantaasambodhaH.
Sutra in English : aparigrahasthairye janmakathantaasambodhaH.39.
Meaning in English : (aparigraha-sthairye) On the stability of non-avariciousness in mind, speech, and acts (janma-kathantaa-sambodhaH) yogi gets the knowledge of questions like - how and why births take place?
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : The fruits of non-avariciousness are — when the person remains away from organ-pleasure-ness and has control of his senses then his mind tends to the good qualities and reasons to the questions like - Who am I? From where I came? What should I do? and, by which act I shall get welfare? etc.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : asya bhavati. ko.ahamaasam kathamahamaasam ki.msvididam katha.msvididam ke vaa bhaviShyaamaH katham vaa bhaviShyaama ityevamasya puurvaantaparaantamadhyeShvaatmabhaavajij~naasaa svaruupeNopaavarttate. etaa yamasthairye siddhayaH.
Meaning In English : (asya bhavati) These words are related to the aphorism, i.e., Yogi gets the above knowledge. (kaH) Who (aasam) was (aham) I ? (katham) How (aasam) was (aham) I ? (kimsvit) What is (idam) this life = birth? (kathamsvit) How (idam) this birth took place? (vaa) Or (ke) what (bhaviShyaamaH) shall we be in the coming birth? (vaa) And (katham) how (bhaviShyaamaH iti) shall we be?
(evam) In this way (aatma-bhaava-jij~naasaa) desire of knowing the self (upaavarttate) arises (svaruupeNa) automatically (asya) in the mind of this yogi, (puurvaanta-paraanta-madhyeShu) for the past, future and present lives.
(etaa) These are (siddhayaH) attainments, which are achieved (yamasthairye) on the stability of Restraints.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism result of non-avariciousness is explained. The Yogi who accomplishes non-avariciousness in mind, speech, and physical acts in all ways, at all times, without any contraries, gets the knowledge of reasons for past, present, and future births.
The devotee on seeing the defects of earning, preservation, destruction, attachment, violence, etc. gives up the efforts for attaining the means for organ pleasure-ness. He gives up the modifications of mind for attaining such material enjoyment, as he understands that greed = wish = avariciousness for such enjoyment is a total hindrance to his target of self-cognizance. So, on knowing the avoid-ability of these material enjoyments, he practices remaining away from the thoughts of these. The thought of non-avariciousness not only includes the present means of material enjoyment but also the wish = greed of spiritual attainments of subtle enjoyments in future births. Such Yogi desiring to destroy the causes of births, wishing for salvation, does not even wish to have the birth in the future.
When the Yogi with the above state of mind tends toward self, then he has curiosity about the births and their causes. As — Who was I in the last birth? How was I in that life-state i.e., for what reasons I was in that life-state? For what reasons I am in this present birth? How did this birth take place? What shall I be in the future birth? How and for what reasons I shall be there? In this way, he wants to know about the births and their reasons. By becoming desireless from all types of material enjoyments, and having no attachment even towards the body which is the base of worldly enjoyments, attains the true knowledge of causes (i.e., the vehicle of actions, afflictions of Nescience, etc., and residual potencies existing in the mind) of taking births. In this way, Yogi attains knowledge of previous and future births and their causes. Seer Patanjali had described the attainment of knowledge of previous life-states by having direct cognition of residual potencies in aphorism 3.18. So, by knowing his residual potencies he attains the knowledge of his previous births.
These five types of attainments are achieved by practicing the Restraints without any contraries. The Yogi by purifying his conduct towards other living beings and making it defect-less in all ways, moves on the path of self-cognition, and performs Observances for internal purification. Now the attainments of Observances are explained.
