Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 55
In English:
Component Word : tataH paramaa vashyataa indriyaaNaam.
Sutra in English : tataH paramaa vashyatendriyaaNaam.55.
Meaning in English : (tataH) On achievement of Abstraction, there is (paramaa) supreme (vashyataa) control (indriyaaNaam) over the senses.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : By not coming into contact with their objects i.e., on being restrained from their objects, the senses come under complete control, So, that whenever the devotee proceeds to worship GOD, he is able to restrain his mind and senses. (Meaning of Sanskrit Text given by Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
When the person becomes the controller of senses, then he can drive his mind to the object wherever he wishes; and on getting the light of knowledge, he always likes the truth, never untruth. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : shabdaadiShvavyasanamindriyajaya iti kechit. saktirvyasanam vyasyatyenam shreyasa iti. aviruddhaa pratipattirnyaayyaa. shabdaadisamprayogaH svechChayetyanye. raagadveShaabhaave sukhaduHkhashuunyam shabdaadij~naanamindriyajaya iti kechit chittaikaagryaadapratipattireveti jaigiiShavyaH. tatashcha paramaa tviyam vashyataa yachchittanirodhe niruddhaaniindriyaaNi netarendriyajayavatprayatnakRRitamupaaya-antaramapekShante yogina iti.
Meaning In English : (kechit) Some say that (avyasanam) non-attachment (shabdaadiShu) to the sound = words etc (objects of senses) is (indriyajayaH iti) the conquest of senses. What is attachment here? (vyasanam) Addiction to an object is (saktiH) attachment, since (vyasyati) it draws away (enam) the devotee (shreyasaH iti) from salvation. And (pratipattiH) enjoyment of (aviruddhaa) un-prohibited and prescribed objects in the scriptures (nyaayyaa) is justified.
(anye) Others say that (shabdaadi-samprayogaH) contact of senses with their objects i.e., sound = words, etc. (svechchhayaa) subject to one's wish i.e., not under the force of potencies of enjoyment, (iti) is the conquest of senses.
(kechit) Others say that (shabdaadi-j~naanam) obtaining the knowledge of the sound = words etc. (raaga-dveSha-abhaave) in the absence of attachment and aversion for the objects, and (sukha-duHkha-shuunyam) without their causing pleasure and pain to the knower, (indriyajayaH iti) is the conquest of senses.
(jaigiiShavyaH) Saint JaigiiShavya says that (apratipattiH) non-initiation of senses towards their objects (chitta-aikaagryaat eva) on account of one-pointedness of the mind, (iti) is the conquest of senses.
(cha) And (iyam vashyataa) this fourth type of control, (tataH) as compared to the first three types, is (paramaa tu) the highest (yat) since (chitta-nirodhe) on restraint of mind (indrayaaNi) the senses are also (niruddhaani) restrained. In this case (yoginaH) Yogi = devotee (na apekShante) does not stand in need (upaayaantaram) of employing other means (itara-indriya-jayavat prayatna-kritam iti) like those employed in the conquest of other organs =senses.
Vedic Commentary in English : By the practice of Abstraction, the devotee achieves supreme control over the sense-organs. It means that such a devotee can drive his mind to the object = subject as per his wish. Swami Dayanand Saraswati clearly wrote in Sanskrit in this regard that — "the state when the sense-organs are being averted from their objects, is called the state of sense-victory; and such devotee can concentrate on the internal objects i.e., Soul and GOD whenever he wishes to do so. So, for internal devotion and worship, attainment of the state of sense victory is a must, otherwise, the devotee will not be able to proceed further on the path of Yoga and cannot achieve Concentration, Meditation, and Trance.
Now, what is the state of sense victory? Various intellectuals had different opinions on this subject, which are as follows —
1. According to some preachers, non-attachment = non-addiction to the objects of senses is the conquest of senses. What is attachment here? Here addiction to an object is that attachment, which draws away from the devotee from salvation. It means that achievement and enjoyment of worldly objects which are not prohibited and prescribed in the scriptures is not a defect and is not a hindrance to sense-victory.
2. Some intellectuals believe that contact of senses with their objects, which is not under force of potencies, but subject to one's wish, is the sense victory. It means that whenever he wants to receive or grasp the objects, then he does so, not otherwise.
3. Some other intellectuals believe that obtaining the knowledge of the objects, in the absence of attachment and aversion to the objects and without their causing pleasure and pain to the knower, is the victory of senses. So, when the person is with attachment and aversion, to the experience of pleasure or pain, then that state is not sense-victory.
4. As per Saint Jaigiishavya non-initiation of senses towards their objects on account of one-pointedness of the mind is the victory of senses. This conception is said as per Seer Patanjali and is acceptable to Seer Vyaasa also.
In fact, in the first three types of control of senses, even without addiction, even with one's wish, and even without attachment-aversion, the senses are in contact with their respective objects; and on such contact, the external objects will be made available to the mind and in this way, restraint of modifications will not be there. In this position, the devotee will not be able to achieve the states of one-pointedness and restraint. And such type of attainment of worldly objects may not be causing pains at present, but the pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation will take place in the future. The result of this will be that with the dominance of the same type of potencies in the mind, the life-cycle will continue for the person. So, these first three options are not a state of victory of sense for the devotee. However, these states are better as compared with that of a person who is totally involved in the enjoyment of worldly affairs. So, the devotee should perform to achieve the state of sense-victory by restraint of mind.
