Padas Name : Saadhana Paada / Means
| Sutra No : 54
In English:
Component Word : svaviShayaasamprayoge chittasvaruupaanukaara ivendriyaaNaam pratyaahaaraH.
Preface to Sutra in English : atha kaH pratyaahaaraH —
Meaning in English : (atha) Now (kaH) what is (pratyaahaaraH) abstraction —
Sutra in English : svaviShayaasamprayoge chittasvaruupaanukaara ivendriyaaNaa.m pratyaahaaraH.54.
Meaning in English : (pratyaahaaraH) Abstraction is that by which (indriyaaNaam) senses (asamprayoge) do not come in contact (sva-viShaya) with their objects and (chittasya svaruupa-anukaara iva) follows the nature of mind, as it were.
Swami Dyanand Saraswati Gloss : When the mind is brought under control, it does not wander from the contemplation of GOD to other objects. This is the restraint of senses, of whom and how? It is to be understood that as the mind becomes fixed in the essence of GOD, So, the senses also are brought under restraint, i.e., senses, etc. are brought under control with the control of the mind. (Meaning of Sanskrit Text given by Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
Abstraction is when the person controls his mind, then the senses are controlled automatically since the mind only drives the senses to their objects.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Vyaasa Commentary in English : svaviShayasamprayogaabhaave chittasvaruupaanukaara iveti chittanirodhe chittavanniruddhaaniindriyaaNi netarendriyajayavadupaayaantaram-apekShante. yathaa madhukararaajam makShikaa utpatantamanuutpatanti nivishamaanamanunivishante tathendriyaaNi chittanirodhe niruddhaaniityeSha pratyaahaaraH.
Meaning In English : (sva-viShaya-samprayoga-abhaave) In the absence of contact with their objects, the senses (chitta-svaruupa-anukaara iva iti) initiate the nature of the mind, as it were. (chitta-nirodhe) When the mind is restrained (indriyaani niruddhaani) the senses are also restrained, (chittavat) like the mind. Further, the devotee (na apekShante) does not stand in need (upaayaantaram) of other means (itara-indriya-jayavat) for control of other senses, (yathaa) just as (makShikaa) bees (anuutpatanti) fly after, as (madhukara-raajam) the queen bee (utpatantam) fly, and (anunivishante) sit after (nivishamaanam) as the queen sits down; (tathaa) similarly (indriyaaNi) senses (niruddhaani) become restrained (chitta-nirodhe) as the mind is restrained. (eShaH pratyaahaaraH iti) This is Abstraction.
Vedic Commentary in English : The literal meaning of Abstraction is that sense-organs do not contact their respective objects; and this position is not possible without the control of the mind.
Ear, skin, eye, tongue, and nose are the five sense organs and their respective subjects are sound, touch, form, taste, and smell (of the objects). The five sense-organs grasp their respective objects = subjects. Whichever sense-organ is in contact with the mind, that sense-organ makes available the respective object = subject to the mind by grasping. The speed of the mind being too high, it appears that it is in contact with all the sense-organs at the same time, So, that all the sense-organs are grasping their respective subjects = objects at the same time. In fact, the mind comes into contact with one sense-organ at a time, and at that time that sense-organ alone grasps its object = subject. So, at the time of working of one sense organ other sense organs do not grasp their respective subjects = objects, and at that time these senses follow the nature of the mind. But due to the high speed of the mind, such restraint of sense-organs does not come to the knowledge of the person.
For the restraint of modifications of the mind, first of all, a devotee is to become desireless towards the available objects in the external world; and sense-organs are the means of contact with these external worldly objects. So, the restraint of sense-organs is one of the prime tasks for a devotee. When the sense-organs of the eye etc. become averted from their respective external objects and follow the nature of the mind, then this stage is called abstraction.
Even though the sense-organs are the direct means of contact with the external objects, yet these remain in the control of the mind. So, Swami Dayanand Saraswati said that "when the person controls his mind, then the senses are controlled automatically since the mind only drives the senses to their objects."
This fact is explained by Seer Vyaasa also that by the restraint of mind, sense-organs are also restrained, i.e., do not come in contact with their respective objects. In this regard, an example is given that just as bees fly, after as the queen bee flies, and sit after as the queen sits down. In the same way, sense organs also follow the mind.
Sense-organs only come into contact with the external worldly objects, these are not able to contact the internal objects; on the other hand, the mind grasps both the external and internal subjects. The mind alone makes available the external objects, grasped by the sense-organs, to the Soul. When the mind becomes restrained from the external objects and remains in contact with the internal subjects/subjects, then on not having the external objects for grasping, the sense-organs, which grasp the external objects, also become restrained. This fact is explained by Swami Dayanand Ji as follows — "when the mind is brought under control, it does not wander from the contemplation of GOD to other objects. This is the restraint of senses ..." When the mind is concentrated on internal objects i.e., the Soul and GOD, So, it remains averted from the external objects, then the senses are also restrained. Why? Since the internal objects are not grasped by the sense-organs. So, when the mind is not diverted to external objects, the sense organs are restrained automatically.
Compliance of desirelessness is a must for attaining abstraction. Desirelessness is not having a thirst for perceptible and scriptural objects and or enjoyments. (Ref - driShTa-anushravika-viShaya-vitriShNasya vashiikaara sa.nGYaa vairaagyam. Yoga 1.15). On having the attachment and thirst for the enjoyment of external objects in the mind, the sense-organs, which follow the mind, cannot become averted from these objects.
Attainment of three internal accessories of Yoga i.e., Concentration, Meditation, and Trance depends on the attainment of Abstraction. The internal journey of the devotee, on the path of Yoga, starts only after attaining the Abstraction. The first five accessories of Yoga, up to Abstraction, are external only. So, studying and listening to the knowledge of GOD, a study of Vedas and Vedic scriptures, compliance of desirelessness, etc. are to be considered as important means for attaining the Abstraction. In this way by restraint of mind, sense-organs are also restrained.
In this regard on "pratyaahaareNa sa.nsargaan" Manusmriti 6.72, Swami Dayanand wrote that — "the defects of contact are to be removed by Abstraction ...." i.e., by removing the defects of contact with the external objects and adopting the characteristics of GOD, all defects and impurities are to be burnt-up. Abstraction is said as an important means for purity and defect-less-ness of external and internal organs in the Vedic hymns, since the devotee with the pure and defect-less sense-organs, devoid of defects of external objects, can become desireless towards worldly enjoyments. Wherever there is advice to make the sense-organs strong, there is also an advice of purification of the whole character of oneself to make the senses pure. (Ref - Yajurveda 34.1-6, and 4.28).
In this way for removing the defects of contact, the mind is to be restrained, and sense-organs are to be controlled by averting them from external objects.
