Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 14
In English:
Component Word : sa tu diirghakaalaH nairantarya satkaaraasevitaH dRRiDhabhuumiH.
Sutra in English : sa tu diirghakaalanairantaryasatkaaraasevito dRRiDhabhuumiH.14.
Meaning in English : (sa tu) And this Practice, (asevitaH) being well attended to (diirgha-kaala) for a long time, (nairantarya) without interruption and (satkaaraH) with devotion, is (driDha-bhuumiH) firmly rooted.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : diirghakaalaasevito nirantaraasevitaH satkaaraasevitaH. tapasaa brahmacharyeNa vidyayaa shraddhayaa cha sampaaditaH satkaaravaandRRiDhabhuumirbhavati. vyutthaanasa.mskaareNa draagityevaanabhibhuutaviShaya ityarthaH.
Meaning In English : (diirghakaalaasevitaH) Well attended to for a long time, i.e., throughout a lifetime, (nirantaraasevitaH) without interruption and (satkaara-asevitaH) with devotion i.e., (sampaaditaH) brought about (tapasaa) by purificatory action, (brahmacharyeNa) by continence, (vidyayaa) by knowledge of Vedic literature (cha) and (shraddhayaa) by faith in the truth, (bhavati) it (i.e., Practice) becomes (driDha-bhuumiH) deeply rooted (satkaaravaan) with welcome devotion. (iti-arthaH) The meaning is that its operation is (anabhibhuuta-viShayaH) not conquered (draagityeva) at once (vyutthaana-sa.nskaareNa) by the impressions = residual potencies of the experiences of the external world.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the eternal life-cycle of the Soul, in order to experience the fruits of his vehicle of actions, the mental modifications normally flow towards worldly affairs. The stream of mind flowing on the path of worldly affairs results in material experiences for the Soul. The base of this stream is nescience, whereas the stream flowing for welfare flows on the path of discriminative knowledge only.
The devotee can start the flow of mental modifications on the path of welfare by practice alone. In order to start this flow, the main means advised is - achieving the discriminative knowledge. To achieve discriminative knowledge, a devotee has to perform the accessories of Yoga, but these are to be performed for a long time (i.e., throughout a lifetime), without any interruption of any kind and with full devotion. By such practice only, the Soul is able to achieve the state of salvation. Seer Patanjali had advised three means to make the practice firmly rooted—
1. Attended for a long time - Performance of accessories of Yoga is to be done for a long time = for the lifetime. Otherwise, it cannot be said when the eternally accumulated vehicle of residual potencies of material enjoyments will become strong, on the manifestation of any cause for them, and divert the stream on the path of the material world.
2. Attended without interruption - Performance of accessories of Yoga is to be done without interruption. Since the mental stream was flowing on the path of material experiences for so, many life-states, now to make the mental stream flow on the path of discriminative knowledge, it is necessary to have excessive labor and caution. As a rope on the stone-head of a well causes impressions on the stone by regular movement, similarly by long-time and regular performance, the mental stream will start flowing on the path of welfare.
"indram praatarhavaamaha indram prayatyadhvare. indram somasya piitaye." Rigved 1.16.3 advised for continuous practice - For the success of Yogic performances and restraint of modifications devotee has to worship the GOD regularly on a daily basis. Similarly, - "archata praarchat priyamedhaaso, archata. archantu putrakaa uta puram na dhriShNvarchat." Rigveda 8.69.8 advises that - For restraint of modifications, practice, and concentration of GOD is to be performed with devotion and faith regularly throughout the life so, that the fruits of Yoga can be achieved easily.
When the continuity of the practice of accessories of Yoga is stopped, then the residual potencies of material enjoyments divert the mind on the lucrative path of worldly enjoyment, and the person, being flowing on the path of nescience, entangles in the vicious cycle of life and death.
3. Attended with devotion - The devotee has to perform the accessories of Yoga with devotion. Seer Vyaasa had further advised the devotion as —
A. With Purificatory Action - The performance of accessories of Yoga is to be done with purificatory action. What is purificatory action? As per Swami Dayanand - "Purity of feelings, believing in truth, speaking the truth and doing as per truth, check the mind from vice, check the organs from vicious acts; i.e., perform virtuous acts from the mind, senses, and body, study of Vedas and true scriptures, behave as per the teachings of Vedas, etc. are known as purificatory acts. Mere burning the body by hot metal etc. is not a purificatory act." (Light of Truth - Chapter 11). As per Seer Vyaasa - Accessories of Yoga are to be performed, even after bearing pleasure-pain, gains-losses, respect-insult, for a long time and without interruption, since yoga cannot be attained by one who does not perform purificatory actions. The impurity which is in mind colored by potencies = impressions of beginning-less vice-virtue actions and afflictions, and presenting the network of external enjoyable, which are the cause of bondage, that cannot be destroyed without performing purificatory action. So, the practice is to be done with purificatory action.
B. With Continence - The performance of accessories of Yoga is to be done with continence. The devotee should remain away from means that are an obstacle to maintaining continence i.e., reading vulgar literature, see vulgar pictures = movies, taking an interest in vulgar talks, listening to vulgar music, adopting eight types of cohabitation, etc., otherwise, the strength of the body will deteriorate, one will not be able to perform the accessories of Yoga with required will power and strength. The vital power saved, in this way, will be helpful and work as fuel to understand the subtlest knowledge of Supreme Soul GOD.
C. With Knowledge - Accessories of Yoga are to be performed with real knowledge i.e., the devotee has to keep on studying and teaching the Vedic scriptures. Without real knowledge, discriminative knowledge cannot be achieved. So, for obtaining real knowledge one has to keep on studying and teaching the Vedas and Vedic scriptures. The Seer of Taittareeya-upaniShada had prescribed the study and teaching of Vedas along with every action in the lifetime.
D. With Faith - Accessories of Yoga are to be performed with faith. The meaning of faith is the act from which truth is adopted and having belief in righteousness, Vedas, and Vedic scriptures. So, accessories of Yoga are to be performed with the faith that with its performance discriminative knowledge will be achieved, the Soul will 'exist in his own form' and with cognizance of GOD salvation will be achieved. This concept had been established very strongly in Vedic literature, as—
yadaa vai shraddadhaatyatha manute. naashraddadhan manute. shraddadhadeva manute. shraddhaatveva vijiGYaasitavyeti. shraddhaam bhagavo vijiGYaasa iti.
(Chhandogya-UpaniShada 7.19.1)
Seer Sanatkumar advised Naarada - 'When a person has faith, then he meditates; when he does not have faith, he does not meditate but meditates only after faith. So, it is important to know the real form of faith (= belief in truth). Then Naarada says - I want to know the concept of faith." So, for the success of Yoga and cognizance of GOD, meditation is a must and for meditation, faith is very important.
For achieving the knowledge of GOD by the Soul, Seer Pippalaada advises Kabandhee who wishes for the knowledge of GOD as —
athottareNa tapasaa brahmacharyeNa shraddhayaa vidyayaatmaanaman-viShyaadityamabhijayante. (Prashna-upaniShada 1.10)
At the time of a virtuous state of mind, to obtain the knowledge of GOD one has to control the Soul with purificatory action, continence, faith, and study of Vedic literature.
It seems that Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the teaching of upaniShada in this aphorism. So, for the devotee, it is very important to perform purificatory action, continence, a study of Vedic scriptures, and faith. By the ‘Practice’, as advised above, one is able to restrain his outward mental modifications and such Practice does not get suppressed by the outward potencies accumulated in mind, and thereby able to divert his mental stream on the path of welfare.
