Samaadhi Paada / Trance / 13
Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 13
In English:
Component Word : tatra sthitau yatnaH abhyaasaH.
Sutra in English : tatra sthitau yatno.abhyaasaH.13.
Meaning in English : (tatra) Of the Practice and Desirelessness, (abhyaasaH) Practice is (yatnaH) the efforts = desirable action (sthitau) to secure the steadiness of mind.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : chittasyaavRRittikasya prashaantavaahitaa sthitiH. tadarthaH prayatno viiryamutsaahaH. tatsampipaadayiShayaa tatsaadhanaanuShThaanam-abhyaasaH.
Meaning In English : (sthitiH) Steadiness is (prashaanta-vaahitaa) the undisturbed calm flow of mind, (avrittikasya chittasya) when it is free from modifications. (prayatnaH) Efforts to (tadarthaH) secure that steadiness is (viiryam) putting in energy and (utsaahaH) maintaining mental aspirations towards that.
(tat-sampipaadayiShayaa) With the willingness to perform the above-said effort, (tat-saadhana-anuShThaanam) restoring to its means (abhyaasaH) is called Practice.
Vedic Commentary in English : Out of two means for restraint of modifications, the activities performed for the steadiness of mind are called Practice. In the explanation of the last aphorism Seer Vyaasa had mentioned - "viveka-darshanaabhyaasena vivekasrotra udghaaTyata" i.e., by habituating the mind to the experience of true knowledge of Mind and Soul its flow towards discrimination is opened. Discriminating knowledge is the knowledge of the difference between the Soul and Matter.
For the Cognitive Trance, efforts to achieve the steadiness of the mind are made by making it devoid of modifications of Activity and Inertial Qualities; for the Ultra-cognitive Trance, efforts to make the mind, devoid of all modifications, are made. For the efforts, with energy and mental aspirations, the performance of its means is prescribed.
Now, what are the means to be performed? The answer is - that those means, that manifest the discriminative knowledge, are only to be performed. These means are prescribed by Seer Patanjali in aphorism 2.28 —
yogaa.nga-anuShThaanaat ashuddhikShaye GYaanadiiptiH aavivekakhyaateH.
i.e., By the practice of the accessories of Yoga, the impurities of afflictions are destroyed and then the light of wisdom reaches up to discriminative knowledge. On this Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote - "Now the eight accessories of worship are explained, by the practice of these, impurities of nescience, etc. decreases and with the increase in the light of wisdom, Soul attains salvation." So, by the performance of accessories of Yoga, the devotee achieves discriminative knowledge. So, the performance of these is said as Practice.
Residual potencies, accumulated in mind, for so, many life-states since eternity, can only be diverted on the path of welfare by Practice alone. The difficult path of restraint of modifications does become easy by the practice of accessories of Yoga and thereby obtaining discriminative knowledge, for a long time and without interruption. With the decrease of nescience and increase of true knowledge, the steadiness of mind increases, and restraint of modifications is also, accomplished.
But this Practice does not result properly if performed for some time only. So, this Practice is to be performed for a long time without any interruption. This fact is confirmed in the next aphorism by Seer Patanjali.
