Padas Name : Samaadhi Paada / Trance | Sutra No : 40
In English:
Component Word : paramaaNuparamamahattvaantaH asya vashiikaaraH.
Sutra in English : paramaaNuparamamahattvaanto.asya vashiikaaraH.40.
Meaning in English : Now (vashiikaaraH) the power of concentration of (asya) the mind of Yogi is (paramaaNu-parama-mahattvantaH) up to the most minute = atom in the subtle objects and up to the sky in the largest objects.
Vyaasa Commentary in English : suukShme nivishamaanasya paramaaNvanta.m sthitipada.m labhata iti, sthuule nivishamaanasya paramamahattvaanta.m sthitipada.m chittasya. eva.m taamubhayii.m koTimanudhaavato yo.asyaapratighaataH sa paro vashiikaaraH. tadvashiikaaraatparipuurNa.m yoginashchitta.m na punarabhyaasakRRita.m parikarmaapekShata iti.
Meaning In English : After attaining the position of steadiness by any purification means, now upon (nivishamaanasya) entering into (sukShme) subtle objects, (chittasya) mind (labhate iti) attains (sthiti-padam) steadiness (paramaaNvantam) upon smallest of the small, down to the atom. And (nivishamaanasya) entering into (sthuule) the large = gross objects (sthiti-padam) attain steadiness in (parama-mahattvaantam) largest of the large i.e., sky. (evam) This way (yaH apratighaataH) the unrestrained power of (asya) the mind, (anudhaavataH) moving in (taam ubhayiim koTim) both the streams of objects i.e., gross and subtle, is achieved and (saH) that power is (paraH) eminent = superior (vashiikaaraH) power. (tad-vashiikaaraat) By that superior power, (paripuurNam) matured = developed (chittam) mind (yoginaH) of Yogi (na punaH apekShate) does not again stand in need of (abhyaasa-kritam parikarma iti) mental embellishment which is achieved by practice.
Vedic Commentary in English : What is the power attained by the mind, on achieving the state of steadiness of mind by performing various means of purificatory actions? Seer Patanjali said that such a mind when enters the sphere of subtle objects can concentrate on the most minute atom and become steady there; and when enters the sphere of gross objects can concentrate on the sky = the largest object and become steady there. So, the yogi can make the mind one-pointed on the gross and subtle objects and is able to cognize those objects in true meanings.
By the above state of mind, when it concentrates on the gross objects and achieves one-pointedness for these gross objects, it is the state of Argumentative Cognitive Trance. Its two types "Indistinct" and "Distinct" are explained in the aphorisms 1.42 and 1.43. In the gross objects, the sky being subtle as compared to the earth and sun, etc. is the biggest object among all objects. Mind, while concentrating on the sky, cognizes it with its real properties. Seer Vyaasa had used the word ‘largest in dimension’ whereas Bhoja had clearly used the word sky. So, many commentators have accepted the ‘sky’ as the largest object, whereas some have taken the ‘Sun’ etc. which can be seen by the eyes.
Similarly, in the subtle object, such concentration reaches up to the atom. Here atom is a particle that cannot be divided further. The creation of gross objects from the atom is explained by Swami Dayanand in Chapter 8 of Light of Truth— "The smallest particle which cannot be divided further is called 'atom', 60 atoms make one molecule, a combination of two molecules (= named as 'dvyanuka') is known as gross = physical air, a combination of three 'dvyanuka' is fire, a combination of four 'dvyanuka' is water and combination of five 'dvyanuka' is known as earth." From this, it is clear that the material cause of gross objects like the earth, etc. is an atom. So, while entering the sphere of subtle objects, the mind achieves the one-pointedness in the 'atom'. By concentrating on 'atom', the mind cognizes the real properties of the atom."
In this way, we see that by concentrating on the gross objects, one achieves the knowledge of these objects; and by concentrating on the material cause of these gross objects the cognizance of properties of 'atom' is achieved. Seer Vyaasa said that such a mind is able to concentrate, as per his wish, on all the objects till the desired time and there is no obstruction for him. Such unrestrained power of the mind is known as a superior power, and the mind does not need a practice of any other mental embellishment in order to achieve steadiness.
In the philosophy of Yoga, we are explaining the process of internal cognizance of various objects. So, in this regard, we must understand the concept of external and internal perception = cognizance. While defining direct cognition in aphorism 1.7 Seer Vyaasa said —
indriyapraNaalikayaa chittasya baahyavastu-uparaagaat-tadviShayaa saamaanya-visheShaatmano.arthasya visheSha-avadhaaraNa-pradhaanaa vrittiH pratyakSham pramaaNam.
i.e., on having contact with the external objects by the mind, through sense organs, and the object having both the generic and specific properties, the mental modification cognizing the specific properties of the object is direct cognition. On the other hand, when the base of the mind is the subtle object, then it cannot become the subject of the sense organs. Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had accepted the internal cognizance of subtle objects in this scripture. Seer Kapila defined the internal cognition of the Yogi in direct cognition as follows —
yat-sambandhasiddham tadaakaarollekhi viGYaanam tatpratyakSham.
Saankhya Philosophy 1.89.
i.e., by the relation of an object, the specific knowledge created in the mind of a person, which shows the form of the object is direct cognition.
Here the knowledge created in the mind of a person, by the relation to the object, is accepted as direct cognition. But the mean of the relation of the object and the mind is not specified, so, to avoid this defect, it is said in the next aphorism —
yoginaama-baahyapratyakShatvaat na doShaH. Saankhya Philosophy 1.90.
The internal cognition by the Yogi, which does not take place through the sense organ, is to be included in this definition. So, there is no defect in direct cognition. Normal persons do cognize the external gross objects through the sense organs, but the internal cognition of the Yogi does take place by having the relation of mind with the subtle object = target object. And further —
liinavastu-labdha-atishaya-sambandhaat vaa adoShaH. Saankhya Philosophy 1.91.
i.e., the cognition of subtle objects = invisible through sense organs, to the yogis, without obstructions and on having regular relation of mind, is not a defect. So, the conception of direct cognition is perfect. On the basis of the above only, Seer Patanjali had accepted the authority of mind to cognize the objects from the atom to the largest one the sky. In fact, in order to explain the conception of cognizance of Soul and GOD internally by the Yogi, cognizance of subtle objects is accepted in direct cognition. So, Seer Kapila had given the generic term of 'relation of the object with the mind' for cognition since the Soul and GOD cannot be cognized through the sense organs. In this way, the Soul cognizes the objects = products of Matter and Matter through the mind and cognizes himself and the GOD.
