Ancient seer Meaning in English : (atha iti ayam) The word "Now" stands for (adhikaaraartham) undertaking = authority. (veditavyam) It is to be understood that (shaastram) an authentic discipline of (yoga-anushaasanam) study of Yoga = trance = contemplation is (adhikritam) undertaken here. (yogaH) Yoga is (samaadhiH) trance = contemplation. (sa cha) And that trance is (dharmaH) characteristic of (chittasya) mind which (saarvabhaumaH) takes place in all its planes. (chitta-bhuumayaH) Planes of mind are (kShiptam) disturbed = wandering, (muDam) stupefied = forgetful, (vikShiptam) occasionally steady or distracted, (ekaagram) one-pointed, and (niruddham iti) restrained.
(tatra) Of these (samaadhiH) the trance (vikShipte) in the distracted state of mind (na) does not (varttate) fall under (yogapakShe) the category of Yoga. Why? Because of (vikShepa-upsarjanii-bhuutaH) unsteadiness appears in a close sequence in the mind due to disturbing energy. (yaa tu) And the trance (ekaagre chetasi) which is in the one-pointed state of mind, that (sad-bhuutam-artham pradyotayati) shows an existing object in its real form, (Shinoti cha kleshaan) removes the afflictions, (karma-bandhanaani shlathayati) loosens the bonds of Karma = all types of actions, and (nirodham-abhimukham karoti) inclines towards the restrained state of Mind; and (sa) this trance is (aakhyaayate iti) said (sampraGYaataH yogaH) “Cognitive Trance”. (upariShTaat nivedayiShyaamaH iti) We shall explain further (sa cha) that this trance is of four types namely (vitarka-anugataH) philosophical curiosity, (vichara-anugataH) meditation, (aananda-anugataH) bliss, and (asmitaa-anugataH) egoism.
However, when (sarva-vrittiH) all the modifications = affairs of mind come (nirodhe tu) under restraint, then (asampraGYaataH samaadhiH) that trance is Ultra-cognitive trance.

The word "now" is for authority. The study of Yoga means that the scripture explaining the properties, types, means, and results of Yoga are started now. The word "anushaashan" in Sanskrit means that by which it is explained that is scripture. The use of this word shows that Seer Patanjali had explained the principles of Yoga, which he had learned from his teachers. As per Yajvalkya Smriti and Mahabharata 12.349.65 - "hiraNyagarbho yogasya vaktaa naanyaH puraatanaH" i.e., None but HiraNyagarbha is the ancient teacher of Yoga. And with regard to who is HiraNyagarbha, Vedas clearly declare that the Supreme Soul GOD is the ancient Hiranyagarbha, as —
hiraNyagarbhaH samavartataagre bhuutasya jaataH patireka aasiit.
Rigveda 10.121.1 and Yajuveda 13.4.
means that when the creation had not started, then the one who is the womb of these material objects like the sun, etc. existed. He is the Eternal Lord of this creation.
So, the GOD named as HiraNyagarbha, who had given his knowledge in the form of Vedas, is the ancient teacher of Yoga. The ancient seers had received this knowledge from the Vedas and spread the same in mankind through their pupils. In this chain, Seer Patanjali explained the same knowledge in the form of aphorisms for mankind.
The accepted principle of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyasaa is that by the performance of Yoga, one achieves salvation = absolute independence = existence in his own form. Here the performance of Yoga, as explained in the aphorisms, is the principal means to achieve the state of salvation. This principle had also, been established by other seers in various scriptures, i.e.,
na upadesha-shravaNe api kritakrityataa paraamarshaadrite virochanvat.
Saankhya Philosophy 4.17.
Even after listening to precept = scripture teachings, the non-practice = non-performance according to the teachings, and not meditating on the subject, do not bring the required results; as in the case of Virochana.
bhaavana-upachayaat shuddhasya sarvam prakritivat. Saankhya 3.29.
By the performance of accessories of Yoga, the devotee becomes pure, sacred, modification-less = devoid of residual potencies, and thereby for the salvation of this devotee, all means become helpful for the achievement of his goal.
In the same way, UpaniShads also, explain —
adhyaatma-yoga-adhigamena deva-matvaa dhiiro harSha-shokau jahaati.
Katha-UpaniShada 2.12.
By performance of meditation, the devotee becomes devoid of worldly happiness and sorrow on knowing the omnipresent Supreme Lord, in the present life itself.
mrityuproktaam nachiketo.atha labdhavaa vidyaametaam yogavidhi~ncha-kritsnam. brahma praapto virajo-bhuudvi-mrityu-ranya.apyevam yo vidadhyaatmameva. Katha-upaniShada 6.18.
In his teaching to Nachiketa, Yamacharya describes that the performance of Yoga is the means for the realization of GOD.
Mundaka-UpaniShada 3.2.6.
Here also, renunciation and performance of Yoga are described as means for achieving the knowledge of GOD and complete independence.
In the same way in Yajurveda, it has been declared —
yuje vaam brahma puurvyam namobhirvi shloka.aetu pathyeva suureH.
shriNvantu vishave.aamritasya putraa.aaa ye dhaamaani divyaani tasthuH.
Yajuveda 11.5.
O the people willing to know Yoga! as I, the truthful Yogi, by praising, prayer, and worship, realize the omnipresent GOD in the Soul, as had been done by the previous devotees, you people also, realize HIM in the same way. As the people who had realized the GOD in themselves and thereby became free and existing in delightful places with the grace of GOD, so, you people also, follow the teachings of Yoga. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
So, in this way, one can realize the Self and GOD through the performance of Yoga and achieve salvation.
Yoga is Contemplation = Trance. The word "Yoga" is formed from the Sanskrit root "yuja samaadhou". Trance is the property that takes place in all the planes of the mind. Now, what is the mind. The mind is an object = substratum which is made from the atoms of Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia. These are five planes of mind —
1. Disturbed — This is a wandering state of mind. The mind moves aggressively toward worldly objects on account of the dominance of Activity property, whereas the properties of Illumination and Inertia remain secondary.
2. Stupefied — This is a forgetful state of mind. With the dominance of the Inertia property, there is an excess of sleep, laziness = lethargy, unconsciousness, etc. In this state, the properties of Illumination and Activity remain secondary.
3. Occasionally Steady — This is the distracted state of mind. This state is better than that of a disturbed state. In this state with the little strongness of Illumination property, the mind becomes steady for some time. But on account of the main strongness of Activity property, it moves toward worldly objects again and again. In this state, there is little dominance of Illumination property, but the Activity property disturbs the dominance of Illumination. However, the Inertia property remains secondary. In this state, the mind also, wanders on account of disease, etc.
4. One-pointed — One modification. On account of the dominance of Illumination property and by following the "Practice" and "Desirelessness" (Ref aphorism 1.12) the authoritative stability of mind on one subject = object, is called a one-pointed state of mind. Seer Patanjali has defined it as — tataH punaH shaanta-uditau tulyapratyayau chittasyaikaagrataa-pariNaamaH. 3.12. i.e., the rising of a similar cognitive act after subsiding of the present cognitive act, and the continuation of the flow of similar acts is called a one-pointed state of mind. When this state becomes the nature of the mind, then the mind of the devotee remains as concentrated = one-pointed. In this state of mind, there is a dominance of the property of Illumination and properties of Activity, and Inertial remains as secondary.
5. Restrained — Total Restraint. In this state all the modifications of the mind are restrained, only residual potencies exist. By the practice of supreme desirelessness, one does not remain attached to the Qualities of Illumination, etc., and as a result, the modifications are restrained. By the proper and continuous practice of it, one becomes eligible to achieve absolute freedom from the clutches of Matter i.e., attains salvation.
This has to be understood that these planes are of the mind, not of the Soul. By ignorance and nescience, one believes that these planes are of oneself = Soul and behaves accordingly, and becomes more and more affected by nescience. In reality, the mind is under the control of the Soul and it gets involved in various modifications = acts by the effort of the Soul; and Soul is capable of controlling the various modifications of the mind and can do so.
Out of the five planes of mind, the trance in the plane of occasionally steady state is not considered in the category of Yoga, since it is affected by Activity property. So, the trance in the lower planes i.e., disturbed and stupefied state is also, not in the category of Yoga, since in these states, it is either affected by Inertia or Activity property.
Trance in the state of the one-pointed state is called Cognitive Trance. By this following are achieved by the devotee —
1. It cognizes the real form = nature of an object, i.e., the object is cognized in its real form = with its real properties.
2. It removes the afflictions i.e., nescience, etc. are weakened.
3. It loosens the bonds of actions = Karma; i.e., potencies of virtue, vice, and mixed acts are weakened = loosened.
4. Makes the mind capable of achieving total restraint and Ultra-cognitive Trance.
The Cognitive Trance is of four categories —
1. Argumentative (= Philosophical Curiosity) — Gross objects become the base of trance, and these are properly cognized.
2. Meditation — Subtle objects and Matter become the base of trance and these are properly cognized.
3. Bliss — A state of painlessness, achieved by mental luminosity, is the base of it.
4. Egoism — The soul is the base of it and is cognized.
These cognitive trances are explained in aphorism 1.17, on the other hand when all the modifications of the mind i.e., modifications taking place even on account of the property of Illumination along with that of Activity and Inertia properties, are restrained, then the Ultra-cognitive Trance is achieved.
Query - Trance in the state of one-pointed and restrained planes of mind is considered in the category of Yoga, not in the other three planes. Then what is the nature and form of trance in the other three planes, as Seer Vyaasa had said trance does take place in all the five planes of the mind.
Solution - Trance is not the name of a state in which one sits in a posture and keeping the eyes closed. Seer Patanjali had defined the trance modification, in aphorism 3.11, as —
sarvaarthataikaagratayoH kShaya-udayau chittasya samaadhi-pariNaamaH.
i.e., the trance modification state of the mind is the destruction of all-pointedness and the rise of one-pointedness. All-pointedness is a movement of the mind towards various available objects/subjects. Stopping this all-pointed movement and rise of one-pointedness is the trance modification of the mind. So, in every plane of mind, there is a possibility of some level of destruction of all-pointedness and rise of one-pointedness. In other words, it can be said that the continuous establishment of knowledge on one subject = object in the mind and forgetting the knowledge of all other subjects and objects is the trance modification of the mind. Bhoja in his commentary on 1.17 had clearly mentioned — "samaadhiH bhaavanaavisheShaH" i.e., the specialized thought is trance. Here the specialized thought is meant to particular thought in all respects on the desired subject = object. Now trance in the other three planes is to be understood as follows —
1. In the disturbed state, the mind, on account of Activity property, moves aggressively towards various subjects = objects. The characteristics of Activity = disturbing energy like movement, anguish-ness, sorrow, grief, jealousy, aversion, worldly enjoyment, pride, distraction, unsteadiness, etc. are the nature of the mind. Now the continuity of any of one of the above characteristics = state in the mind and stoppage of all other characteristics is the trance modification of the disturbed state of mind. As one on account of sex (=worldly enjoyment) remains attached to a person of the opposite sex and continually thinks about the same. But due to the dominance of Activity property, being affected by afflictions, the performance of vice, etc. this type of trance modification does not fall in the category of Yoga.
2. In the stupefied state, there is an excess of illusion, and ignorance in the mind on account of Inertia property. In this state, the person remains affected by excess sleep, unconsciousness, illusion, anger, laziness, dirtiness, etc. Now the continuity of any of one of the above characteristics = state in the mind and stoppage of all other characteristics is the trance modification of the stupefied state of mind. As, one remains in anger main on account of any reason i.e. if someone tries to cause physical injury or loss of my property or property of my family, and continually thinking for causing loss to the other person with or without any reason. But due to the dominance of Inertia property, the performance of vice, being affected by afflictions, etc. this type of trance modification is not characterized as Yoga.
3. In the same way it is to be understood in case of a distracted state of mind. In this case, there is an increase in the performance of virtue; one is attached to virtue, GOD, Soul, and like modifications and he tries to concentrate on such subjects. But due to the strongness of Activity property = disturbing energy, the mind diverts towards other objects = subjects again and again and there is a stopping of one-pointedness. So, being affected by the Activity property, this type of trance modification is also, not considered Yoga.
In all the above three states of mind, trance modification is not helpful in achieving salvation. So, the trance modification can take place in all the five planes of mind, but Yoga takes place only in the one-pointed and restrained state of mind.
