Sutra in English : dRRiShTaanushravikaviShayavitRRiShNasya vashiikaarasa.mj~naa vairaagyam.15.
Meaning in English : (vairaagyam) Desirelessness = dispassion is (vashiikaara-sa.nj~naa) the consciousness of supremacy of a person who is (vitriShNasya) free from thirst for (drishTaH) perceptible and (aanushravikaH) scriptural (viShayaH) enjoyments.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : striyo.anna.m paanamaishvaryamiti dRRiShTaviShaye vitRRiShNasya svargavaidehyaprakRRitilayatvapraaptaavaanushravikaviShaye vitRRiShNasya divyaadivyaviShayasamprayoge.api chittasya viShayadoSha-darshinaH prasa.mkhyaanabalaadanaabhogaatmikaa heyopaadeyashuunyaa vashiikaarasa.mj~naa vairaagyam.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (vitriShNasya) A mind free from the thirst of (driShTa-viShaye) perceptible enjoyments such as (striyo-annam-paanam-aishvaryam iti) women, food, drinks and powers of wealth, social rights, authority, etc. which can be available in the present life; and (vitriShNasya) having no thirst for (aanushravika-viShaye) scriptural enjoyments such as (svarga) heaven and (vaidehya-prakritilayatva-praaptau) attainment of the state of Videha and Prakritilaya [1]. And when (samprayoge api) one comes into contact with (divya-adivya viShayaH) such divine [2] and worldly objects, but (viShaya-doSha-darshinaH) due to understanding the defects of all such objects i.e., destruction, changeability, and painfulness, etc., (chittasya) the state of mind (vashiikaara-sanj~naa) with the consciousness of its supremacy, (prasa.nkhyaana-balaat) brought about by virtue of intellectual Illumination, (anaabhogatmikaa) that not to enjoy all such objects, and (heya-upaadeya-shuunyaa) having no feeling of aversion and/or attachment towards all such objects, is called (vairaagyam) Desirelessness = dispassion.
Vedic Commentary in English : Two means - Practice and Desirelessnes are advised for restraint of modifications. By 'Practice' of discriminative knowledge, one has to open the stream towards a path of welfare = salvation; and by Desirelessness one has to remain indifferent towards the enjoyments of the world. Until a person does not have an interest in the spiritual path, till then there is no cause for him to stop his attachment to worldly material enjoyment. Further, in aphorism 1.16 Seer Vyaasa stated that Desirelessness is the highest perfection of complete discriminative knowledge. So, for these reasons, Desirelessness is prescribed after the 'Practice'. By Desirelessness one is able to stop the stream of accumulated residual potencies of worldly material enjoyments, since eternity, existing in the mind. Since by experiencing material enjoyment, a satisfaction of one's wishes is not accepted by the seers, as —
na jaatu kaamaH kaamanaam-upabhogena shaamyati.
haviShaa kriShNavartmeva bhuuya evaabhivardhate. Manu-smriti 2.69.
As put in the fuel and oil in the fire increase the fire, so, by experiencing the material enjoyment lust-ness is not satisfied, but increases. So, for this reason, Desirelessness is advised for self-development and spirituality in life.
Now, what is Desirelessness? The normal meaning of the term is not to have an attachment, desire, and pleasure feeling toward material objects. Seer Patanjali explained this as the state of mind where the person has no thirst for the enjoyment of perceptible objects, i.e., a self-controlled feeling of a person without residua towards material enjoyment, for not having wished to experience these. Perceptible objects are those material enjoyments that can be seen and/or achieved or are achieved through senses i.e., foods, drinks, wealth, authority, etc.; and towards the objects, positions of scriptural enjoyments. The scriptural objects are - as described in Vedic scriptures - "svargakaamo yajet" i.e., perform Yagya for achieving heaven after death from the present body = life, attaining the state of Videha and Prakritilaya, or attaining the experience of subtle color-smell, etc. (aphorism 1.35), and attaining the various authorities and abilities by having Sanyama on various subjects and objects, as explained in the third chapter named 'Vibhutipaada' of this scripture. The mental authoritative modification that is devoid of any such desire is called Desirelessness.
The most prominent and strong means and cause of attachment towards the world is the body of the human being. For this reason, Seer Vyaasa started his explanation with the word "stri" which is meant for a woman. Attachment of a man towards a woman and a woman towards a man is on account of body, foods, drinks, power of wealth, prosperity, social rights, authorities of various types, and various objects available for material enjoyment in the form of color, taste, smell, sound, and touch, are the perceptible objects. Similarly, the subjects advised in Vedas heard from the teachers = seers, pleasure-ness of heaven, wish of wealth and power, etc. in the next life, wish of attaining the state of Videha and Prakritilaya, attainments on account of Sanyama on various objects as explained in the 3rd chapter of this book, are known as scriptural objects. A devotee has to accomplish the thirstless mental position towards these objects. He should not have a wish = desire to attain these objects. It should be understood that various attainments are obstacles for trance (3.37); and Desirelessness is advised towards attainments on account of cognizance of Mind and Soul, for attaining salvation (3.50). In the explanation to aphorism 3.55 Seer Vyaasa clearly stated that for achieving salvation devotees need not have attained powers of Yoga, achievable through Sanyama on various objects = subjects. So, for cognizance of GOD, even the devotee who has attained the various powers of Yoga has to become totally desireless towards these attainments. Otherwise, the existence of the Soul in his form and cognizance of GOD will remain as a dream only.
A yogi comes into contact with the available material objects and subjects. A normal person comes into contact with the available visible material objects; but the yogi comes into contact with the subtle smell, taste, color, touch, and sound by concentrating on the fore-part of the nose, etc. (Aphorism 1.35). Though these types of experiences are helpful in motivating him to move on the path of Yoga, these become an obstacle to the achievement of higher planes of Yoga (Aphorism 3.37). So, the yogi, even on coming in contact with normal and subtle material objects, has to see the defects of these material experiences and see the pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation (aphorism 2.15), and with the help of discriminative knowledge about the real form of these material-experiences, and maintain the mental control of not to enjoy these experiences. He clearly understands that by the experience of these available material enjoyments, he will have to experience various types of pains as a result of such experiences. These material objects are mortal, destroyable, and will get destroyed after a time span, and ultimately one will have to experience pain only. Though whatever pleasure-feeling is there, during the experience time of these material objects, will also, end after that time. Since where there is experience, there is a disease. So, even though one is feeling pleasure, on account of nescience, from material objects during the experience time, ultimately these results in pains only. All-time bliss is not possible from the experiences of material objects. So, by knowing the reality of perish-ability, pleasure-less-ness, and generation of pain-ness of available and achievable material objects, a devotee does not get trapped in these material experiences. He creates an authoritative mental state, devoid of attachment and aversion towards these material experiences that though these material experiences are available, I am not for these. Even on the availability of material experiences, the authoritative control of not experiencing these, on account of the above reasons, is called Desirelessness. Those material objects which cannot be achieved or where one does not have the capacity to obtain them, for those material objects one normally does not have thought to experience them; and even in case of available material objects, if one does not have the wish to experience them on account of one's defects of disability, then this is also, not to be considered as Desirelessness. Since on removal of that defect or disability one will have a strong instinct to avail of these and will start experiencing those material objects in full swing. So, it is important one should understand here that - "What is my position? Whether I do not want to experience the material object on knowing the defects of these for I am not experiencing these on account of my physical-mental-social defects and disabilities?"
This Desirelessness = dispassion towards the available material objects = experiences and scriptural objects = experiences are called the normal and are helpful and become cause to attain Cognitive Trance.
Comment in English : (Hence desirelessness is the state of mind where the person has no thirst for the enjoyments of perceptible i.e., the enjoyments of objects = subjects and positions which are available or can be seen or achieved in this world, and the enjoyments of objects = positions which are scriptural i.e., will be available in the next live-state.) . State of Videha and Prakritilaya are explained in detail in aphorism 1.19.
. Divine objects are subtle objects which do not come in contact with normal sense-organ power.
