Meaning in English : (atha) Now, (katham iti) how is (sampraGYaataH samaadhiH) the Cognitive Trance (uchyate) said to appear (niruddha-chitta-vritteH) in those, whose minds have been restrained (upaaya-dvayena) by the two means i.e., Practice and Desirelessness:—
Sutra in English : vitarkavichaaraanandaasmitaaruupaanugamaatsampraj~naataH.17.
Meaning in English : (sampraGYaataH) The Cognitive Trance is (vitarka-vichaara-aananda-asmitaa-ruupaanugamaat) of four-fold characters namely philosophical curiosity (=argumentation), meditation (=deliberation), beatitude (=elation) and egoism.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : vitarkashchittasyaalambane sthuula aabhogaH. suukShmo vichaaraH. aanando hlaadaH. ekaatmikaa sa.mvidasmitaa. tatra prathamashchatuShTayaanugataH samaadhiH savitarkaH. dvitiiyo vitarkavikalaH savichaaraH. tRRitiiyo vichaaravikalaH saanandaH. chaturthastadvikalo.asmitaamaatra iti. sarva ete saalambanaaH samaadhayaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (chittasyaalambane) A Superficial attempt of teh mind to grasp (sthuula aabhogaH) the gross object is (vitarkaH) philosophical argumentation. An attempt of the mind to grasp (suukShmaH) subtle objects, i.e., starting from subtle elements to Mattar is (vichaaraH) meditation = deliberation. An attempt of the mind to grasp (hlaadaH) bliss is (aanandaH) beatitude. An attempt of the mind to grasp (ekaatmikaa samvit) self = Soul only is (asmitaa) Egoism. (tatra) Of these (prathamaH) first is (savitarkaH samaadhiH) Argumentative trance, (chatuShTayaanugataH) accompanied by all the four i.e., philosophical argumentation, meditation, beatiude, and egoism (But teh sphere of action for the mind is primarily gross objects). (dvitiiyaH) The second is (savichaaraH) Meditative Trance where (vitarkavikalaH) philosophical curiosity = argumentation ends but contains meditation, beatitude, and egoism (But the sphere of action for the mind is primarily subtle objects which end at Matter) (tRRitiiyaH) The third (saanandaH) cognitive trance is based on bliss, where (vichaaravikalaH) meditation ends but contains beatitude, and egoism (But the sphere of action for the mind is primarily bliss = beatitude). (chaturthaH) The fourth where (tadvikalaH) the beatitude also ends, is (asmitaamaatra iti) purely egoistical Cognitive Trance (Where the sphere of action for the mind is to grasp self = Soul only and one realizes teh same). (sarva ete samaadhayaH) All the four Cognitive Trances (saalambanaaH) are achieved through the mind, and these have something to grasp, i.e. there are objects = subjects with whom teh mind gets colored.
Vedic Commentary in English : When the outward modification of Activity and Inertia Qualities are totally restrained by Practice and Desirelessness then Cognitive Trance takes place in the state of mind where Illumination Quality dominates. This is called the one-pointed state of mind. Now, what is Trance? Seer Patanjali defines it as - sarvaarthataikaagratayoH kShayodayau chittasya samaadhi-pariNaamaH (aphorism 3.11) i.e., destruction of all-pointedness and rise of one-pointedness is the trance modification. Bhoja on this has said - 'samaadhiH bhaavanaavisheShaH' i.e., Trance is the specialized thinking. It means that by the continuous and logical thinking of the targeted object, devoid of any other thinking, keeping the mind concentrated on that particular object is called specialized thinking and this is the state of trance. In the Cognitive Trance, one cognizes the targeted object in its true real form, without any type of suspicion and ignorance, with all its properties. Seer Vyaasa also, mentioned in the explanation of aphorism 1.1 that Cognitive Trance helps to know the targeted object in its real form. Seer Patanjali explained the form of Cognitive Trance, which takes place in the one-pointed state of mind, in aphorism 1.41. In this aphorism, 4 types of Cognitive Trance are described.
The ultimate fruit of Yoga is salvation, which is not possible without the cognition of GOD. But the cognition of GOD is not possible straight away. GOD, being the subtlest object, is present everywhere and in every other object on account of his omnipresence. All other objects are gross as compared to GOD. So to cognize the GOD, one has to start by cognizing the real form of gross objects. In the four types of Cognitive Trance, the devotee, with the help of his mind, starts cognizing from the visible gross objects which end up in the cognition of the real form of self = Soul.
While clarifying the grossness and subtlety of the objects, Seer Kapila has categorized the objects as animate and inanimate as below —
sattva-rajas-tamasaam saamyaavasthaa prakritiH prakriteH-mahaan mahato-aha.nkaaraH aha.nkaaraat pa~ncha-tanmaatraaNi-ubhayam-indriyam tanmaatrebhyaH sthuulabhuutaani puruShaH iti pa~nchavi.nshatiH-gaNaH. (Saankhya Philosophy 1.61)
There are 24 inanimate objects such as - the equilibrium state of Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia is Matter. An object of pure-beness (=Phenomenal Objective Existence = Mahattattva in Sanskrit) is manifested from Matter; the second product of Egoism gets manifested from the object of Pure-beness; from the object of Egoism 16 objects ( = five subtle elements, five sense organs, five work organs, and mind) get manifested; from five subtle elements, five gross objects get manifested. The soul is the 25th object which is animate and different in properties and characteristics from all the above.
Out of the above Matter and its products are gross as compared to the Soul, hence cognizance of the real form is necessary for knowing the real form of the Soul.
To understand this further, let us know the tree of creation for the above objects -
(In this regard it has to be noted that the level of grossness increases at every next level of sub-production. The last level of creation in any category is known as grossest in that category, though the level of grossness may not be same for the all the gross products. Every previous level of creation is subtle to its succeeding level. So, Matter is the subtlest of all; the last 16 products (= 5 gross objects, 5 sense organs, 5 work organs, and 1 mind) are gross only; the remaining 7 products are gross as compared to proceeding level, and subtle as compared to succeeding level.)
This categorization is to be understood from the following table —

Earth Water Fire Air Sky
In the first i.e., Argumentative Cognitive Trance gross objects are made as the base in the mind cognizing the real form of these. Various explainators have accepted gross elements only (i.e., earth, water, fire, air, and sky) as the base to be grasped by the mind. See, as these five are gross objects on account of not having any sub-products, the same is the case with the sense and work organs as these also, do not have sub-products. These are also, gross only, being the last product in their line of production, though these are subtle as compared to the five gross objects. Seer Vyaasa had mentioned "gross" for Argumentative Cognitive Trance. So, Bhoja also has taken all the 16 last levels of products as the base for the first category of Cognitive Trance. Further Seer Vyaasa has categorized all these 16 products (= 5 gross objects, 5 work organs, 5 sense organs, and mind) as 'specialized' in his explanation of aphorism 2.19; and he had not counted organs as subtle objects in his explanation to aphorism 1.45. So, we have accepted all these 16 objects as the base to be grasped by the mind in Argumentative Cognitive Trance. When the fore-situation = the production cause and after-situation = destruction situation of these objects are properly thought, and the word = noun (= name), meaning (= object), and knowledge of these objects and their properties, characteristics, etc. are concentrated as a whole, then it is known as Argumentative Cognitive Trance. In this trance, the real form of these objects is cognized. This trance is of two types namely 'Indistinct' and 'distinct'.
When the yogi gets the gross objects cognized, then he proceeds to cognize the subtle objects = the subtle products of the Matter. Now he makes subtle elements of sound, touch, color, taste, smell, etc., egoism, pure beness, and Matter as the base of concentration in his mind, with their space, time, and properties and with such specialized concentration cognizes the real form of these objects. This is called the Meditative Cognitive Trance. This trance is also, of two types - one is normal and the other is ultra-meditative.
Up to this state, yogi gets the complete real knowledge of all the products of the Matter starting from the gross object of the earth to the subtlest Pure beness along with the Matter itself. In the matured performance of Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance, the yogi achieves mental luminosity. In that state "the mental flow is without the impurities of afflictions and mind is not overpowered by the properties of Disturbing energy and Inertia and such flow is known as mental proficiency. Such yogi achieves the mental luminosity and with such mental capacity he becomes sorrow-less" (aphorism 1.47) In this way with the achievement of a sorrow-less state of mind, the yogi gets manifestation of blissful state in mind; and with the base of such bliss in the mind, yogi achieves the Beatitude Cognitive Trance. In the state of mental luminosity, he sees that all the external objects made of Matter and Matter are different from him i.e., Soul; and experience that the material cause of this universe is Matter only, and this whole universe is for the experience and salvation of Soul. With such distinctive knowledge of the material world and Soul, he has a feeling of pleasure in his mind and the trance based on such pleasure is called Beatitude Cognitive Trance.
Now by not considering this pleasure-full state as his target, and knowing that the Soul is a different object from the Matter and its products when he concentrates on 'his form' as the base, then it is known as Egoism Cognitive Trance. In such concentration, the form of mind also becomes minimal in nature and there is the dominance of the form of the Conscious Soul, and therefore "his existence" = Soul's conscious form mainly remains as the primary object. In this state, the mind, which cognizes the other objects on being colored by them, exists as pure as of pureness of the Soul and cognizes the Soul mainly.
In this way, this Cognitive Trance is of four types. Of these, Argumentative Cognitive Trance has the base for the concentration of all four i.e., gross objects, subtle objects, bliss, and Soul, but gross objects are cognized primarily. The Meditative Cognitive Trance has the following bases for concentration - subtle objects, bliss, and Soul, but subtle objects are cognized primarily. The Beatitude Cognitive Trance has the bliss and Soul as bases for concentration, but bliss is cognized primarily. The Egoism Cognitive Trance has the "Soul" as the base for concentration and that alone is cognized. All these trances take place with some base for concentration and are known as 'trance with base'. Further, in aphorism 1.46 Seer Patanjali has called the first two types i.e., Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances (with their divisions) as seeded trances, as these have external objects as the base for concentration. The remaining two types i.e., Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances do not have external objects as the base for concentration, so these are not called seeded trances; however, cognition in these trances takes place with the help of the mind, so the trances are known as 'trance with base'. In fact, the word "aalamban (in the Sanskrit Language)" is used both for the base (= mind) and external objects in the context of Yoga in this scripture.
Question:- You have considered all the external objects as bases for the Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances, whereas the other explanators (namely Vaachaspati Mishra, Vijyaan-bhikshu, Brahmaleen Muni, Ramashankar Tripathi, Hariharaanand Aarnya, Surendra Srivastava, Swami Vijyaanaashram, Brahmamuni, Rajavir Shastri, Swami Satyapati ji, etc.) have not accepted this principle. What is the testimony to accept this classification?
Solution: The commentary of Seer Vyaasa alone is accepted as an authentic one. He mentioned gross as the base for Argumentative, subtle as the base for the Meditative, bliss as the base for Beatitude, and self = Soul as the base for Egoism Cognitive Trance. Based on this various explainators have mainly included gross objects for the Argumentative Cognitive Trance, subtle elements for the Meditative Cognitive Trance, organs, and mind for the Beatitude Cognitive Trance, and Soul and mind for the Egoism Cognitive Trance. (Details are given in our Hindi Explanation)
Seer Vyaasa had accepted the creation process as explained by Seer Kapila in his Saankhya Philosophy 1.61. This creation process has been explained above in this aphorism by a table. As per this creation process, 16 objects (= 5 gross elements, 5 sense organs, 5 work organs, and the mind) are the grossest in the line of creation, since there is no next level of creation from these. On the basis of the explanation of Seer Vyaasa, and in the light of various verbal cognitions and testimonies, this classification is to be understood as follows —
1. Seer Vyaasa, while accepting the creation process of Saankhya Philosophy, had categorized these 16 objects, being last in their creation process, as 'specialized' objects in his explanation of aphorism 2.19. It has been clearly mentioned there - "na visheShebhyaH param tattvaantram asti iti visheShaaNaam naasti tattvaantrapariNaamaH" i.e., there is no material modification after the specialized modifications. Hence these 16 specialized modifications have no further material modifications. So, these are the last products in the creation process and hence are the grossest.
2. Seer Vyaasa did not include sense and work organs and mind in the subtle products in his explanation of aphorism 1.45. In aphorism 1.44 subtle objects are said as the base for the Meditative Cognitive Trance and in aphorism 1.45 these subtle objects are named which are 8 in number from subtle elements to Matter. So, not accepting the cognition of all the products of Matter before the cognition of Matter will be contumacy only, as some explainators have accepted the organs as the base in Beatitude Cognitive Trance.
3. Seer Yama in Katha-UpaniShada had accepted organs as gross as compared to subtle elements - "indriyebhyaH paraa hi arthaa arthebhyaH cha param manaH. manasaH tu paraa buddhiH buddheH aatmaa mahaan paraH" (3.10) i.e., subjects, in the form of sound, touch, color, taste, and smell, are certainly subtle as compared to sense organs, and mind (= power to grasp) is subtle than these subjects, and power of decision (= termed as 'Buddhi' in Vedic literature) is certainly subtle than the mind, and objective substance of Pure beness is more subtle than the Buddhi. Here also, organs are clearly taken as gross, as compared to subtle elements. Similarly, in Saankhya Philosophy 1.61 it is said - ".... aha.nkaaraat pa~ncha-tanmaatraaNi-ubhayam-indriyam tanmaatrebhyaH sthuulabhuutaani... " organs are placed after subtle elements in the creation process. Hence as per testimonies organs are gross as compared to subtle elements.
4. Even the level of grossness, in the five gross elements, also, differs. Even a normal person cannot cognize the air and sky through his eyes, however, the air is cognized by the touch organ, we can only cognize the products made from fire, water, and earth through our eyes.
Seer Vyaasa clearly stated in his explanation of aphorism 1.43 that the perception of the yogi is specialized which is different from inference and verbal cognition, hence this is called supreme perception. This supreme perception is the base for the creation of scriptures and inferential knowledge. So, as per the Vyaasa commentary, it is proper to accept the 16 objects as gross objects which become the base for the Argumentative Cognitive Trance, and cognition of the real form of these becomes the base for cognition of subtle objects in the next stage of trance.
5. Other explainators have accepted subtle elements as the base of Meditative Cognitive Trance and organs as the base for Beatitude Cognitive Trance. In such a case what about the cognition of Egoism, an object of Pure beness and Matter i.e., in which Cognitive Trance these will be cognized? It is also, to be considered that Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had accepted 'mental luminosity' in aphorism 1.47 and said that the 'cognitive faculty of a yogi is full of truth' in aphorism 1.48 on achieving the proficiency of Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance. Acceptance of such states merely on cognition of gross elements and subtle elements only, as per such explainators, is against the principles accepted and advised by Seer Patanjali and Vyaasa.
Hence on the basis of the above reasons, all 16 objects being the last ones in their line of creation, though different in the level of grossness, are accepted as the base of Argumentative Cognitive Trance.
Seer Vyaasa had said 'suukShmo vichaaraH' i.e., subtle objects become the base of cognition in Meditative Cognitive Trance. Here as per the principle given by Seer Vyaasa, 5 subtle elements, Egoism, an object of Pure beness, and Matter are taken as the base of this Trance. Seer Patanjali said the subtle objects as the base for Meditative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances in aphorism 1.44 and aphorism 1.45 clearly advised that the province of subtle objects reaches up to Matter. While writing a commentary on this aphorism Seer Vyaasa said that - 'the subtle element of atoms of the earth is the odoriferous ether; the subtle elements of a liquid atom is the gustiferous ether; the subtle elements of a fiery atom is the luminiferous ether; the subtle element of a gaseous atom is the tangiferous ether; the subtle element of a spacious atom is the soniferous ether. The subtle element = cause of these five ethers is Egoism. The subtle cause of Egoism is Pure-beness = Phenomenal Objective Existence. The principle subtler of this = Pure-Beness is the Matter.' This explanation is as per Seer Kapila of Saankhya Philosophy. Further, in aphorism 1.46 it is clearly said that the base of external objects is for the Distinct Argumentative to Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances - 'In case of trances having gross objects as the base for concentration, it is Distinct and Indistinct Argumentative Cognitive Trance; and subtle objects as the base for concentration, it is Meditative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance.' So, on the basis of this, these four are considered as seeded trances. So, as per the principles advised by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, 8 subtle objects starting from subtle elements to Matter are taken as the base of concentration in Meditative Cognitive Trance.
Seer Vyaasa had clearly accepted the gross objects as the base for concentration in Argumentative Cognitive Trance and subtle objects as the base for concentration in Meditative Cognitive Trance. So, taking organs, mind, and Matter as the base for concentration, by other explainators, for Beatitude Cognitive Trance is against the principle of Seer Vyaasa, since all these are included in the gross and subtle objects as explained above.
Seer Vyaasa had said 'aanando hlaadaH' i.e., bliss becomes the base of concentration in Beatitude Cognitive Trance. The subject of concentration in this Cognitive Trance is bliss which is not a physical object. On having the cognition of gross objects to Matter in Distinct Argumentative Cognitive Trance to Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance, the yogi attains mental luminosity which results in the experience of a pleasure-full state of mind. Trance taking place on the basis of this pleasure is known as Beatitude Cognitive Trance. This type of meaning was conveyed by Vijyanbhikshu, one of the explainators, in his gloss, but after such feeling, he mentioned organs as the base of concentration for this trance, which is not as per the principle given by Seer Vyaasa.
After cognition of all the objects = products of Matter and Matter, the only object left for cognition is the Soul which is to be made as a base for concentration. The Soul is said as the base for concentration in the Egoism Cognitive Trance, which is termed 'aikaatmikaa samvitasmitaa'. But the cognition of the Soul, in this trance, takes place with the help of the mind with the dominance of Illumination Quality.
The above type of classification is as per the principles given by Seer Vyaasa and as per the internal testimony of this scripture.
Now the question arises when did such types of explanations or classifications start? We feel such types of explanations started after Bhoja. The explanations of Bhoja were not according to Vyaasa's commentary, and some diversion took place in his commentary. Thereafter the other explainators namely Vaachaspati Mishra and Vijyaanabhikshu had given other type of classification which was not as per Seer Vyaasa; explainators of modern time followed them with some modifications in their explanations. We understand that in order to understand Yoga in true meanings as per Seer Patanjali, the explanation of Seer Vyaasa is the only authoritative commentary and we had given the above classification as per the testimony of Seer Vyaasa only.
Query:- Many explainators have accepted godly idols as the base for concentration along with the gross objects for Argumentative Cognitive Trance, whereas no such mention had been made here?
Solution:- Seer Vyaasa had not advised godly idols anywhere. Even Bhoja who is the next commentator on yoga aphorism had not indicated any such godly idols in his commentary. This concept was first included in their commentaries by Vaachaspati Mishra and Vijyaanbhikshu and afterward, some other explanators followed them. As per Seer Patanjali, Seer Vyaasa, Vedas, and Vedic scriptures, GOD is accepted as formless, and idols of the GOD cannot be proved. So, such type of knowledge comes under unreal cognition = nescience and hence is avoidable only.
