Preface to Sutra in English : athaasampraj~naataH samaadhiH kimupaayaH ki.m svabhaavo veti —
Meaning in English : (atha) Now (kim upaayaH) what are the means (vaa) and (kim svabhaavaH) the nature of (asampraGYaataH samaadhiH iti) Ultra-Cognitive Trance ? —
Sutra in English : viraamapratyayaabhyaasapuurvaH sa.mskaarasheSho.anyaH.18.
Meaning in English : (abhyaasa-puurvaH) By the constant practice of (pratyayaH) Supreme Desirelessness = Dispassion, which is the cause of (viraama) restraint of all mental modifications and (sa.nskaara-sheShaH) where the residual potencies only remain, (anyaH) a trance other than Cognitive Trance i.e., Ultra-Cognitive Trance is achieved.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : sarvavRRittipratyastamaye sa.mskaarasheSho nirodhashchittasya samaadhirasampraj~naataH. tasya para.m vairaagyamupaayaH. saalambano hyabhyaasastatsaadhanaaya na kalpata iti, viraamapratyayo nirvastuka aalambaniikriyate. sa chaarthashuunyaH. tadabhyaasapuurvaka.m hi chitta.m niraalambanamabhaavapraaptamiva bhavatiityeSha nirbiijaH samaadhirasampraj~naataH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (asampraGYaataH samaadhiH) The Ultra-Cognitive Trance is (nirodhah chittasya) that state of restrained mind, in which (sarva-vritti pratyastamaye) all its modifications = affairs cease from action i.e., restrained and (sa.nskaara-sheShaH) their impressions [of modifications] only remain (= residual potencies only remain), and (tasya) its (upaayaH) mean is (param-vairaagyam) the Supreme Desirelessness = Dispassion.
(hi) Because (saalambano-abhyaasaH) the practice of concentration having objective phenomenon for its basis (na kalpata iti) cannot become (tat-saadhanaaya) the mean of achieving the Ultra-Cognitive Trance; so, (viraama-pratyayaH) the practice of Supreme Desirelessness = Dispassion, which is mean for restraint of all mental modifications, and (nirvastukaH) which has nothing substantial, is (aalambanii-kriyate) made the basis for achieving it; (sa cha) and that practice is (artha-shuunyaH) without an objective phenomenon i.e., without any external objects. (hi tat-abhyaasa-puurvakam) By the constant practice of Supreme Desirelessness, (chittam) the mind, (niraalambanam) having no object to grasp, (bhavati) becomes (abhaava-praaptam iva) as it were non-existent. (iti) So, (eShaH) this (samaadhiH) trance (nirbiijaH) being thus seedless (asampraGYaataH) is known as Ultra-Cognitive Trance.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the Egoism Cognitive Trance, the yogi cognizes his = Soul's conscious form with the help of the mind. In this state, the experience of the conscious form of the Soul makes him desireless towards the inanimate objects which are different from his form. All these inanimate objects, being the products of Matter, are of three-fold Qualities, so, in this state yogi even becomes thirstless towards the Qualities. This state is known as the state of Supreme Desirelessness. On achieving Supreme Desirelessness yogi starts to restrain the prominent Illumination Quality present in Egoism Cognitive Trance and restrain all the modifications that manifest in the mind one by one. On the manifestation of any modification, he thinks that 'this modification is not the form of Soul; this modification is not the form of Soul'. In this way for the restraint of modifications, he continuously thinks of this fundamental fact and also, keeps the knowledge of restraint of modification as maintained.
In this state all the modifications of the mind, all the subjects = objects as the base for concentration in Mind, in the form of gross, subtle, and bliss, are restrained; and none of the object, which was cognized, remains as the base of concentration in mind, and as such no cognizance thereof takes place. All the objects that were cognized till now, cease to exist as a base of concentration in the mind; and in the absence of external objects as a base in the mind, the practice for concentration is known as without objective phenomenon. In such practice, the residual potencies only remain in the mind. In such a state mind becomes as if it were non-existent, since now it is not capable of performing its function of cognizing objects and the manifestation of modifications and remains to exist as pure as the Soul (Vyaasa Commentary on 1.5).
On account of this concentration without objective phenomenon, the trance is called Ultra-cognitive Trance. In this trance, on account of the cessation of external objects, the Soul achieves existence in his form. Cognizance of the Soul in the Egoism Cognitive Trance was through the mind, on the other hand, cognizance of the Soul in the Ultra-cognitive Trance does not take place through the mind, but it does take place on the basis and support of the Supreme Soul GOD. Till the Soul depends on the Matter and its products, he remains away, on account of nescience, from the omnipresent GOD, who is also, present in him; and when the dependence and base of Matter and its products ceases, by the practice of Supreme Desirelessness, then cognizes himself with the support of Supreme Soul GOD. In this state alone the Soul exists in the form of Supreme Soul GOD with knowledge. On achieving this state, the conscious Soul exists in the conscious GOD with full knowledge of such existence, and Soul gets engrossed in the form of GOD. The existence of the Soul in the GOD, who is always in the Soul, with knowledge is known as "Cognizance of GOD".
Bhoja while writing on this aphorism wrote - 'tatra yaa kaachit vritti-ullasati, tasyaa neti neti iti nairantaryeNa paryudasanam viraama-pratyayaabhyaasaH' i.e., whatever modification is manifested in the mind, that is abandoned with the continuous knowledge that 'this is not the form of Soul, this is not the form of Soul', and such practice is known as the knowledge of restraint of modification. Seer Kapila had also, advised this for the practice of real knowledge of GOD in Saankhya philosophy, as -
tattvaabhyaasaat neti neti iti tyaagaat vivekasiddhiH. (Saankhya 3.75)
i.e., while meditating and concentrating on the knowledge of GOD, whatever object comes into the mind, by any means, for that yogi should think - 'this is not that, this is not that' i.e., this object is not the form of Soul / GOD; in this way abandoning all the objects one achieves the discriminative knowledge and becomes able to cognize the GOD in himself.
See, the advice of GOD is done by these words in other scriptures. As in the Brihadaaranyaka-upaniShada Seer Yajvalkya while answering a question of Shaaklya said - "... sa eSha neti neti aatmaa ..." (3.9.26) i.e., the GOD is advised by this word 'neti' = 'this is not that' i.e., this is not the form of GOD. In this way, King Ajaatashatru also advised Baalaaki as -
athaata aadesho neti neti na hi etasmaat iti na iti-anyat-param-asti-atha naamadheyam satyasya satyam iti praaNaa vai satyam teShaam-eSha satyam. (Brihadaarnayaka-upaniShada 2.3.6)
i.e., the advice on the subject of GOD is by the words 'neti-neti', since no other advice is better than this. None of the objects and god (= divine material objects) and/or intellectuals are superior to the Supreme Soul GOD. His name is 'truth of truth'; the life-power of the universe is truth and GOD is the life-power of this universal life-power, he alone is unparalleled and is of the form of consciousness and bliss-ness.
The state of Ultra-cognitive Trance is also, said as a state where the residual potencies only remain. This is to be understood as follows - residual potencies of the outgoing state of mind (stupefied and disturbed states) are destroyed by the residual potencies generated in a distracted state of mind; residual potencies of a distracted state of mind are destroyed by the residual potencies generated in the one-pointed state of mind; residual potencies of restrained state of mind destroy the residual potencies of one-pointed state of mind and its own residual potencies. In the restrained state of mind, the residual potencies generated up to the one-pointed state of mind are destroyed and as a result, the residual potencies of the restrained state only remain. And as per Seer Vyaasa, on aphorism 1.51 the mind with the proficiency of restrained state, leading to salvation disappears into its own cause = Matter along with the residual potencies; and in this way, the yogi, by achieving the trance without the base of mind, exists in his form and thereby further exists in the conscious form of GOD with knowledge.
This Ultra-cognitive Trance takes place without the base of mind hence called 'Niralamban' and in it, none of the product of Matter and/or Matter become the base of concentration, the tendency of the Soul is not towards attaining worldly experience, and seeds of afflictions and vehicles of actions have been burnt-up, hence called as seedless trance; and in this state by the destruction of seeds of afflictions and residual potencies becoming as burnt-up, the present birth of the Yogi is known as the last birth.
Query:- In the Philosophy of Yoga, Cognitive Trance is called 'saalamban' and seeded trance, and Ultra-cognitive Trance is called 'niraalamban' and seedless trance. Please elaborate.
Solution:- Let us first understand the meaning of 'saalamban' and 'niraalamban' since no equivalent terms, for these, are available in the English language. 'saalamban' is the state where the mind, with the dominance of Illumination Quality, performs the function of concentration for bases available; on the other hand, 'niraalamban' is the state when the mind had fulfilled his duty of making available the grasped objects to the Soul and exists as pure like the Soul.
In aphorism 1.17 Seer Vyaasa had called all four classifications of Cognitive Trance "saalamban" (= i.e., there are subjects = objects with whom the mind is colored). In aphorism 1.18 while explaining the Ultra-cognitive Trance it is said that - 'Because the practice of concentration having objective phenomenon for its basis cannot become the mean of achieving the Ultra-Cognitive Trance; so, the practice of Supreme Desirelessness = Dispassion, which is meant for restraint of all mental modifications, and which has nothing substantial, is made the basis for achieving it; and that practice is without an objective phenomenon i.e., without any external objects. By the constant practice of Supreme Desirelessness, the mind, having no object to grasp, becomes as it were non-existent. So, this trance being thus seedless is known as Ultra-Cognitive Trance.'
In the Ultra-cognitive Trance, the mind exists just like it lacks its functioning, but in Cognitive Trance it performs its functioning of grasping the objects = subjects. So, in Cognitive Trance, all the concentrations are performed through the mind alone; and in Ultra-cognitive Trance the term 'niraalamban' means that the mind is not available to grasp any of the object = subjects. For the Indistinct Argumentative Cognitive Trance the words used are 'svaruupa-shuunyaa eva' which means that the mind, appearing in the form of a concentrated object, works as if it were devoid of its own nature; for Ultra-Meditative Cognitive Trance words used are - 'praGYaa cha svaruupa shuunyah eva' which means that the trance consciousness becomes devoid of its own nature; and on the other hand for the Ultra-cognitive Trance, the words used are 'abhaava-praaptam iva' which means as it were non-existent. So, in the Cognitive Trances, the mind becomes devoid of its nature but is available to grasp the objects and appears in the form of concentrated objects, whereas in the Ultra-cognitive Trance, it exists like a non-existent.
Seer Patanjali had classified the four types of Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances as seeded trances, on which Seer Vyaasa had commented that in these four trances, external objects become the base of concentration, hence are known as seeded trances. And Ultra-cognitive Trance is said a seedless trance which means that in it external objects do not become base for concentration; further, this trance is said as 'niraalamban' means that concentration of the conscious objects Soul and GOD do not take place with the mental capacity. In this regard, it is to be understood that the inanimate mind, which is made of three-fold Qualities of Matter, does not have the capacity to grasp the conscious objects, and conscious objects cannot be cognized through the inanimate mind.
Query:- The Ultra-cognitive Trance is said as 'niraalamban'. Whereas you are saying that in this trance GOD becomes the base for concentration, which means the trance has a base for concentration. So, this explanation does not seem to be as per the principles of this scripture.
Solution:- On this issue, we had discussed in our explanation of aphorism 1.2. In the Ultra-cognitive Trance, the external objects only are restricted to be taken as the base for concentration, not the GOD. The fruit of Yoga is salvation, which cannot be attained without the cognition of GOD. The concept of prohibition of all objects as the base of concentration in the Ultra-cognitive Trance had found ground only about a thousand years back, on account of not understanding the form of GOD and non-practice and non-study of Vedic scriptures. If Seer Patanjali had the intention of prohibiting the GOD as the base in Ultra-cognitive Trance, then he would not have advised for devotion to GOD by "iishavara-praNidhaanat vaa" (1.23) and repetition of his name 'aum' and ponder over its meaning by "tajjapaH tadartha-bhaavanam" (1.28). Similarly, Bhoja in his explanation of aphorism 1.17 wrote that the devotee, who is not targeting cognition of the Soul and GOD after attaining Beatitude Cognitive Trance, is known as 'Videha'; and who is not targeting cognition of GOD even after attaining Egoism Cognitive Trance is known as 'Prakritilaya'; and both these, as per aphorism 1.19, are not able to achieve salvation in absence of cognition of GOD in Ultra-cognitive Trance. Further, in aphorism 1.20 the Cognitive Trance takes place by means of faith, energy, memory, trance, and discernment, and in the last Ultra-cognitive Trance is considered as the best means for achieving salvation.
Cognition of GOD is described in Ultra-cognitive Trance in UpaniShada as below:-
yadaa-tamastatra divaa na raatriH-na sanna chaasachchhiva eva kevalaH.
tadakSharam tat-savituH-vareNyam praGYaa cha tasmaat-prasritaa puraaNii. Shvetaashvetara-upaniShada 4.18.
It means that on cessation of afflictions and potencies of nescience when the trance is achieved then it cannot be said that it is day or it is night, it cannot be said that creation exists, my body and other objects of the world are there or not; at that time no modification manifest in the mind and mind exist as form-less and being involved in the supreme target of achieving the GOD; and at that time Soul sees the supreme blissful GOD, who is most shine-full in the universe since HE makes the sun shines, and whose knowledge had reached in the human world through Vedas.
So, the bliss achieved by being involved in the conscious form of GOD, when the afflictions and acts of yogi cease to exist by performing trance, cannot be explained in words. To achieve that supreme bliss of Supreme Soul GOD, the trance is the only means for it, and by believing so, one should perform Yoga with an intense level of Supreme Desirelessness.
The position explained above is of the Ultra-cognitive Trance only, where the Soul achieves cognition of GOD.
Query:- "na tatra ki.nchit sampraGYaayata iti asampraGYaataH" (Vyaasa on 1.2). You are prescribing the cognition of GOD in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, whereas the other explainators say, on the basis of the above statement of Seer Vyaasa, that nothing is cognized in the Ultra-cognitive Trance.
Solution:- Your query is on account of ignorance of scripture. The meaning of the above statement given by other explainators is against the references of the internal testimony of Vyaasa's commentary. The correct meaning of the statement is shown in the aphorism.
See, when a person is in deep sleep, that position is explained in the scriptures as below — tad-yatraitat-suptaH samastaH samprasannaH svapnam na viGYaanaatyaasu tadaa naaDiiShu sripto bhavati. tatra kashchan paapmaa sprishati tejasaa hi tadaa sampanno bhavati. (Chhandogya-upaniShada 8.6.3.)
It means that when the Soul is in the state of deep sleep, he is involved in himself i.e., all the modifications of organs cease, so, he is not affected by the pleasure-pain on account of external objects, and exists in a pleasure-full state; at that time, he does not see dreams and remains in the 'puriitati' nerve in the internal nervous system, and no sin and/or external pleasure-pain touch him since he is in his conscious form.
atha yadaa suShupto bhavati yadaa na kasyachana veda hitaa naama naaDayo dvaasaptatiH sahasraaNi hridyaat-puriitatamabhi-pratiShThante taabhiH pratyava-sripya puriitati shete ... (Brihadaaranyaka upaniShada 2.1.19)
The Soul when goes to a state of deep sleep and does not know about any object, then he moves here and there in the various nerves, out of 72000 nerves which are spread in the body, and in the end, sleeps after engrossing the organs in himself. Similarly—
(Brihadaaranyaka upaniShada 4.3.19)
When he goes into a state of deep sleep, he neither wishes anything nor sees any dream.
Seer Vyaasa while explaining the sleep modification in aphorism 1.10 states that on awakening a type of knowledge exists in the mind - I slept comfortably, or I slept distress-fully, or I slept in great stupidity. This type of knowledge cannot be there without experience. In the state of deep sleep, the mind is inactive, so the experience taking place in the Soul is not available in the form of modification of the mind, nor that experience is explained in words. That state is devoid of worldly pleasure and pains. The experience of deep sleep cannot be said as properly known, but the experience exists, and the Soul being detached from the external world exists in the form of the GOD only. However, due to the dominance of Inertia Quality, such knowledge does not take place.
To understand the above conception, let us go through the advice of Seer Yajvalkya to King Janaka, about the state of deep sleep, as given in Brihadaaranyaka-upaniShada 4.3.23 to 4.3.32 —
It means that the belief that the Soul does not see anything in the state of deep sleep, is not correct, since the Soul who sees it certainly exists, but he does not see another object which different from him. Since in that state, the seeing capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that seeing capacity is immortal. Then why does he not see any other object? As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, that he can see. Similarly in the next statements, he said —
Certainly, in that state Soul does not smell, which is not correct. Even with the smelling capacity, he does not smell anything else, as the smelling capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, which he can smell. 4.3.24.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not taste, which is not correct. Even with the tasting capacity, he does not taste anything else, as the tasting capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, which he can taste. 4.3.25.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not speak, which is not correct. Even with the speaking capacity, he does not speak anything, as the speaking capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, about which he can speak. 4.3.26.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not hear, which is not correct. Even with the hearing capacity, he does not hear anything, as the hearing capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, from whom he can hear. 4.3.27.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not meditate, which is not correct. Even with the meditating capacity, he does not meditate about anything, as the meditating capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, about which he can meditate. 4.3.28.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not touch, which is not correct. Even with the touching capacity, he does not touch anything else, as the touching capacity of the Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, which he can touch. 4.3.29.
Certainly, in that state Soul does not cognize, this belief is not correct. Even with the capacity to cognize, he does not cognize anything else, as the cognizing capacity of the Knower = Soul is not destroyed, since that capacity is immortal. As in that state no other object, different from himself, is available, which he can cognize. 4.3.30.
This is further elaborated —
yatra vaa.anyadiva syaat-tatra-anyo.anyat pashyed.anyo.anyat-jighredanyo-.anyat-rasayedanyo.anyad vadedanyo.anyat-shriNuyaadanyo.anyat-manviitaanyo.anyat-sprishedanyo.anyat-vijaaniiyaat. (4.3.31)
It means that certainly if something else exists in that state, then in that state of sleep the Soul should see that different object, smell that different object, taste that different object, speak some words to that or for that, hear that different object, meditate that different object, touch that different object and cognize that other different object. 4.3.31.
And lastly, he advised —
O King! That GOD is one like the water, is the viewer of all, and is non-comparable. This GOD alone is the ultimate place of His bliss, nothing else. This is the advice; this is the discipline. The ultimate success of the Soul is the cognition of GOD, this is his best property = attainment. HE is the ultimate target. HE is the ultimate source of supreme pleasure. By having a part of HIS Pleasure, all living beings experience pleasure-ness.
In this way, Seer Yajvalkya clarified the subject to King Janak that in the state of deep sleep, Soul even with his all powers, does not see anything, does not smell anything, does not taste anything, does not speak anything, does not hear anything, does not meditate anything, does not touch anything, does not cognize anything, since in that state no other object is available which, he can see, smell, taste, speak, hear, meditate, touch or cognize. In this state, the Soul exists in himself on the basis of GOD, but due to the dominance of Inertia Quality, he is not knowing this position.
When a normal person achieves this position every day in this body, then how can the cognition of Supreme Soul GOD by the Soul be said as impossible in the Ultra-cognitive Trance? The experience and knowledge of deep sleep can not be verbally expressed in the form of modification. Similarly, the knowledge manifested on account of testimony = verbal cognition cannot be treated as cognition of GOD. The knowledge achieved by on meditating the form, properties, and qualities of GOD, is helpful for the cognition of GOD, but this is the superior state of mind with Illumination Quality and is to be treated as a pre-state of Ultra-cognitive Trance.
As per "samaadhi-suShupti-mokSheShu brahmaruupataa" (Saankhya Philosophy 5.116), there is a similarity between deep sleep and Ultra-cognitive Trance. So, in the Ultra-cognitive Trance also, the Soul does not see anything, smell anything, taste anything, speak anything, touch anything, meditate anything, or cognize any material object. At that time, the Soul, by being existing in his form, exists in the GOD, and this position is with knowledge of this. In this state, there being no effect of Inertia Quality, the Soul is knowing his state. But this knowledge does not flow towards the mind, so at the time of worldly affairs, it is said that - "na tatra ki~nchit sampraGYaayata iti-asampraGYaataH" = since nothing is cognized in that state so, it is Ultra-cognitive Trance.
"Cognition of GOD in Ultra-cognitive Trance" is discussed in the preface of this book. Various testimonies are given there. Therefore, GOD can not be said as a restrained base in the Ultra-cognitive Trance. Actually, GOD only remains as the base of concentration in Ultra-cognitive Trance.
