Sutra in English : shraddhaaviiryasmRRitisamaadhipraj~naapuurvaka itareShaam.20.
Meaning in English : (itareShaam) For other than the Videha and Prakritilaya Yogis, it is (shraddhaa-viirya-smriti-samaadhi-praGYaa-puurvakaH) preceded by faith, energy, memory, trance, and discernment.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : upaayapratyayo yoginaa.m bhavati. shraddhaa chetasaH samprasaadaH. saa hi jananiiva kalyaaNii yogina.m paati. tasya hi shraddadhaanasya vivekaarthino viiryamupajaayate. samupajaataviiryasya smRRitir-upatiShThate. smRRityupasthaane cha chittamanaakula.m samaadhiiyate. samaahitachittasya praj~naaviveka upaavarttate. yena yathaartha.m vastu jaanaati. tadabhyaasaattadviShayaachcha vairaagyaadasampraj~naataH samaadhirbhavati.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yoginaam) For the Yogis (bhavati) trance is achieved (upaaya-pratyayaH) by the means. Of these, (shraddhaa) faith is (samprasaadaH) pleasingness = purity = liking state (chetasaH) of mind. (saa) It (hi) certainly (paati) sustains (yoginam) the Yogis, (kalyaaNii) being auspicious, (jananii iva) like a mother, from the obstacles of Yoga. (hi) So, then (viiryam) energy is (upajaayate) born (tasya shraddadhaanasya) in the faithful = trusted pursuer of Yoga who is (vivekaarthinaH) desirer of distinctive knowledge. (smritiH) The memory of earlier fruitful experiences of Yoga (upatiShThate) comes to help to (samupajaata-viiryasya) well-possessed energetic Yogi. (cha) And (smriti-upasthaane) on the appearance of memory (chittam) the mind (anaakulam) ceases to be disturbed and (samaadhiiyate) passes to trance. (samaahita-chittasya) To the Yogi, with the well-entranced mind, (praGYaa-viveka) discrimination = distinctive knowledge (upaavarttate) appears, (yena) by which, this Yogi (jaanaati) knows (yathaartha-vastu) an object as it is i.e., with its real properties.
(tad-abhyaasaat) By constant practice of distinctive knowledge (cha) and (vairaagyaat) by Desirelessness = Dispassion (tad-viShayaat) to that discriminative knowledge also, (asampraGYaataH samaadhiH) Ultra-cognitive Trance (bhavati) is achieved.
Vedic Commentary in English : For the yogis, other than the Videha and Prakritilaya devotees, other means of achieving trance are advised in this aphorism. These are faith, energy, memory, trance, and discernment by which Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trances are achieved. The devotees, who target the highest goal of Yoga, are to adopt these means. For these yogis, the Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trances are achieved in succession by the practice of these means. A devotee performs the accessories of Yoga by faith etc. in order to achieve the cognizance of GOD. These means are as follows:-
1. Faith:- Faith is the pleasingness, purity, and liking state of mind. In the explanation of aphorism 1.14, it is advised that the accessories of Yoga are to be performed with faith. The devotee should have a belief that by the performance of the accessories of Yoga, he will attain discriminative knowledge, and ultimately Soul will exist in his form; and after that by cognizance of GOD, salvation will be achieved. By this purity of mind increases and the wilful performance of accessories of yoga is maintained. Such faith, as described in the Vedic scriptures, sustains the Yogi like a mother, from the obstacles of Yoga.
2. Energy:- It is meant for high spirits. The mind of the devotee remains in high spirits on performing the accessories of Yoga with faith. Energy also has a relation with the control of organs. By maintaining and protecting semen in the body, the energy of the body increases and it works as a fuel to grasp the subtlest knowledge of GOD easily (Ref explanation to 1.14). So, the faithful pursuer of Yoga, by having faith in the principles given in the Vedic scriptures, and by becoming energy-full by protecting semen in the body, move further on the path of Yoga with high spirits. High spirits cannot be maintained without energy.
3. Memory:- Memory means not to forget the earlier experiences of yoga i.e., to maintain the knowledge of planes achieved earlier. The faithful pursuer of Yoga memorizes the fruitful experiences achieved in the performance of Yoga. He knows which type of obstacle was destroyed to achieve a particular plane. By the knowledge of this, he knows the means to remove the obstacles, which can arise in the future and moves further to achieve higher planes by performing the Yogic practices.
4. Trance:- The faithful devotee, with the help of energy and memory as above, is able to make his steady mind concentrate on a particular object i.e., the mind becomes entranced. By adopting the above three means, the mind of a yogi becomes devoid of all obstacles and unsteadiness and thereby becomes concentrated. Bhoja had also, called this state, as a state of one-pointedness. This is the state where the devotee achieves the Cognitive Trance. In this state, he practices the four types of Cognitive Trances in sequence or as per his knowledge and experiences and remains involved in achieving the higher planes of yoga.
5. Discernment:- The devotee with the entranced mind attains the discriminative knowledge. The yogi achieves real knowledge of the objects and their properties in the respective Cognitive Trances. And in the highest state of Cognitive Trance i.e., in the Egoism Cognitive Trance, he achieves the knowledge of the distinction between the Matter and Soul which is termed as distinctive knowledge.
By the constant practice of the above means and on being desireless towards the distinctive knowledge, since this knowledge is avoidable as compared to the form of the Soul, and on having the Supreme Desirelessness by cognizance of the Soul, the devotee achieves the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance. In the Ultra-cognitive Trance, on being existing in his form, the Soul cognizes the conscious form of GOD by his conscious form and gets engrossed by the form of GOD and thereby achieves his ultimate target of salvation.
Query:- Almost all the explainators, on the basis of Seer Vyaasa, have considered the 'bhava-pratyaya' and 'upaaya-pratyaya' as the types of Ultra-cognitive Trances. Whereas you have explained the same differently, why so, and what is the testimony?
Solution:- It is not proper to accept the 'bhava-pratyaya' and 'upaaya-pratyaya' as types of Ultra-cognitive Trances. Both the words, i.e., 'bhava-pratyaya' and 'upaaya-pratyaya', are not nouns. The meaning of the word 'pratyaya' is mean = cause. So, the meaning of these terms is - a trance caused by the knowledge of the universe, and by means, respectively. The reasons for not accepting the 'bhava-pratyaya' as a type of Ultra-cognitive Trance, are given in the explanation of the last aphorism. In the case of 'upaaya-pratyaya' the initial trance caused by means of faith, energy, and memory is Cognitive Trance where the real knowledge of objects, made as a base for concentration, is obtained which is clear from the Vyaasa Gloss. By the constant practice of Cognitive Trance, the devotee achieves the distinctive knowledge of Soul and Matter in the highest state of Cognitive Trance. Seer Vyaasa is very clear in saying that - 'tad-viShayaat cha vairaagyaat asampraGYaataH samadhiH-bhavati' i.e., by Desirelessness towards this distinctive knowledge Ultra-cognitive Trance is achieved. So, it is clear that by performing accessories of Yoga with faith, etc. the devotee attains the Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trances in sequence.
Further, the trance taking place with memory cannot be termed Ultra-cognitive Trance. Since memory is a mental modification, and its restrain is advised in the explanation of aphorism 1.11. Whereas for Ultra-cognitive Trance restrain of all modifications is a must. As per Seer Vyaasa on aphorism 1.51, the residual potencies in Ultra-cognitive Trance are to be known by inference, so, in such a condition memory cannot exist in this trance. So, it is as per the testimony only that by means of faith, energy, and memory, first Cognitive Trance takes place and then by becoming desireless towards the distinctive knowledge obtained in Egoism Cognitive Trance, Ultra-cognitive Trance is achieved.
For this reason, in the preface to aphorism 1.19, we had translated the term - 'sa khalu ayam dvividhaH' as - 'This trance is achieved in two ways'.
