In English:
Component Word : sa eShaH puurveShaam api guruH kaalena anavachChedaat.
Sutra in English : sa eShaH puurveShaamapi guruH kaalenaanavachChedaat .26.
Meaning in English : (sa eShaH) HE is the (guruH) teacher (puurveShaam-api) of the ancients too, (kaalena-anavachchhedaat) because HE is not limited by time.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : GOD is the teacher of all — of the ancients such as Agni, Vayu, Aaditya, Angira, and Brahmaa, etc. who were born at the beginning of creation, of the moderns such as ourselves and those also, who will be born in future. GOD is called the teacher because He imparts true meanings through the Vedas. Hence GOD is eternal for all times, as the movement of time does not take place in Him i.e., He is not affected by the process of time. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabuumikaa - Eternity of Vedas).
As we become knowledgeable / learned by getting an education from teachers in the present life, so, the GOD is the teacher of Agni, etc. at the beginning of creation. As the Souls become knowledge-less during deep sleep and holocaust, so, is not in the case of GOD. His knowledge is eternal. So, it is certain that the occasional objects = subjects cannot take place without a cause (Light of Truth - Chapter 7).
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : puurve hi guravaH kaalenaavachChidyante. yatraavachChedaarthena kaalo nopaavarttate sa eSha puurveShaamapi guruH. yathaasya sargasyaadau prakarShagatyaa siddhastathaatikraantasargaadiShvapi pratyetavyaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (puurve guruvaH) The ancients teachers i.e., from the teachers i.e., Agni, etc. born at the beginning of creation, and others born before the current generation (hi) certainly (avachchhidyante) conditioned = died (kaalen) by time. (yatra) Where (kaalaH) time (na upaavarttate) does not exist (avachchhe-daarthena) as to limit / condition, (sa eSha) He, the GOD, (guruH) is the teacher of (puurveShaam-api) ancient teachers too. (yathaa) As the GOD, (prakarShagatyaa) because of its supreme power and knowledge, and being the teacher of virtue and knowledge (siddhaH) as existing (aadau) at the beginning of (asya) present (sargasya) creation, (tathaa) so, also, (pratyetavyaH) it is to be understood about His existence as such (atikraanta sargaadiShu api) in the previous creations too.
Vedic Commentary in English : GOD is omniscient on account of having extreme knowledge which cannot be exceeded. Further, HE does not have any own purpose for the creation of the universe, HE creates this universe to compassion the Souls and advises them of virtue and knowledge so, that they can also, attain the ultimate bliss and pleasure. So, being omniscient and advisor of virtue and knowledge at the beginning of every creation HE is the first teacher of mankind. In this regard, there is a testimony of Vedic scriptures —
tasmaadyaGYaat-sarvahuta richaH saamaani jaGYire.
chhandaa.nsi jaGYire tasmaadyajustaasmaadajaayata. Yajurveda 31.7
i.e., O people! you must know the GOD who is the Supreme Lord, for whom all sacrifices are made, and by whom all Vedas - Rigveda, Saamaveda, Atharvaveda, and Yajurveda are manifested (Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
richo akShare parame vyoman yasmin devaa adhi vishve niSheduH.
(Rigveda 1.164.39)
i.e., in the eternal Supreme Soul GOD, the sources of all knowledge i.e., four Vedas and all heavenly bodies exist ...
yasmaadricho apaatakShan yajuryasmaadapaakaShan.
saamaani yasya lomaanyatharvaa.ngiraso, mukham.
skambham tam bruuhi katamaH svideva saH. (Atharvaveda 10.7.20).
The knowledge in the form of four Vedas - Rigveda, Yajurveda, Saamaveda, and Atharvaveda is given by the omnipotent GOD. From the figure of speech, GOD advises that Atharvaveda is like my mouth, Saamaveda is like my hair, Yajurveda is like my heart and Rigveda is like my breath. Further, it is questioned that - who is that God by whom these Vedas are given? It is replied as that the GOD who administers this universe his name is 'skambha', HE alone is the giver of knowledge in the form of Vedas. You must cognize Him and there is no other object that can be worshipped by human beings. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika - On creation of Vedas).
evam vaa are.asya mahato bhuutasya niH-shvasitametadyadrigvedo yajurvedaH saamavedo.atharvaa.ngirasaH. (Shathapatha 14.5.4.10)
Seer Yaajyvaklya while advising his wife said — the Supreme Lord GOD, who is bigger than this sky and is omnipresent, has given four Vedas - Rigveda, Yajurveda, Saamaveda, and Atharvaveda. As the human being takes a breath in the body and breath out, so, GOD also creates Vedas at the beginning of the universe and gives knowledge to human beings. These Vedas do not exist in the holocaust but always exist in the knowledge of GOD, so, these never get destroyed since this is the knowledge of GOD and is eternal like the GOD
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumika - On creation of Vedas).
tebhyastaptebhyah-trayo vedaa ajaayanta, agneH-rigvedo, vaayoH-yajurvedaH, suuryaat-saamavedaH. (Shatapatha 11.5.8.3)
The GOD had given the knowledge through ancient saints i.e., Rigveda through Saint Agni, Yajurveda through Saint Vaayu, and Saamaveda through Saint Suurya. In this way, three types of knowledge in the four Vedas are given. Similarly, Seer Manu advised —
agnivaayuravibhyastu trayam brahma sanaatanam.
dudoha yaGYasiddhyartham-rigyajuHsaamalakshaNam (Manusmriti 1.23).
The Supreme Lord GOD, for the success of worldly affairs, i.e., virtue, material prosperity, wishes, and salvation, i.e., for all types of knowledge in the world had given knowledge of Rigveda, Yajurveda, and Saamaveda through the Saint Agni, Vaayu, and Ravi.
In this way, all Vedic scriptures acknowledge that GOD is the teacher of virtue and knowledge, as his knowledge is extreme and cannot be surpassed. So, HE alone is the first and ancient teacher. On getting the knowledge of Vedas, these ancient saints had given the knowledge to others. In this way, this knowledge reaches us through the teacher-pupil system, and in the same way, it will reach the coming generations. All the teachers starting from the beginning of creation i.e., Seer Agni, Vaayu, Aditya, and Angira were conditioned by time i.e., died in due course of time. But time cannot affect the existence of GOD, so, HE ever remains in one form. HE was the advisor of Vedas in the previous creations also, and will also, advise the knowledge in the form of Vedas in the coming creations. The reason for this is that his knowledge is eternal and extreme. The human teacher after seeking the knowledge from their teachers and/or Vedas becomes capable of giving the knowledge to others. The Soul, having the defect of little knowledge, his knowledge can always be surpassed by others. So, a Soul even becomes most intelligent in his lifetime, but cannot attain the similarity to the knowledge of GOD.
The ancient saints and seers had not accepted any human teacher equivalent to GOD. As per Vedic scriptures, any human teacher is not worthy of surrender, devotion, worship, etc. However, we are to gain knowledge of various subjects from our teachers for success in life. But such a teacher should have the true knowledge on the respective subject, otherwise will be attaining defective and wrong knowledge. It is very painful that in the present world, we accept the above principle, about the teacher, for the knowledge of the material world; but with regard to knowledge of spirituality, virtue, and GOD we forget the above principle and accept those as their teachers who do not have knowledge of even the basic level of virtue and GOD. As a result, the human race has gone far away from virtue and GOD in terms of true knowledge.
So, as per Seer Patanjali, the GOD is the supreme teacher of a devotee who wants to perform Yoga and move forward on the path of Yoga.
