In English:
Component Word : taaH eva sabiijaH samaadhiH.
Sutra in English : taa eva sabiijaH samaadhiH.46.
Meaning in English : (taa) All these four i.e., Indistinctive, Distinctive, Meditative, and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances are (sabiijaH) seeded (samaadhiH) trances (eva) only.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : taashchatasraH samaapattayo bahirvastubiijaa iti samaadhirapi sabiijaH. tatra sthuule.arthe savitarko nirvitarkaH, suukShme.arthe savichaaro nirvichaara iti chaturdhopasa.mkhyaataH samaadhiriti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (taaH) These (chatasraH) four (samaapattayaH) Indistinctive, Distinctive, Meditative, and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances (bahih-vastu-biijaa) have external objects as the base for concentration, i.e., objects other than self = Soul, and are either Matter or made from Matter, (iti) so, (samaadhiH api) the trance is also, (sabiijaH) "seeded".
(tatra) In the case of trances having (sthuule arthe) gross objects as the base for concentration, it is (savitarka nirvitarkaH) Indistinctive and Distinctive Cognitive Trances; and (suukShme arthe) subtle objects as the base for concentration, it is (savichaaraH nirvichaara) Meditative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances. (iti) Thus (samaadhiH) the trance is (upasa.nkhyaataH) described as (chaturdhaa iti) four-fold.
Vedic Commentary in English : All the four - Indistinct, Distinct, Meditative, and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances, taking place on the basis of external objects alone, are said as seeded trances. In the commentary on this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa used the words "taking place on the basis of external objects", and these are very important. For the yogi, all the objects other than the "self" = the "Soul" are external and these are the objects made from the Matter and Matter (itself); on the other hand, GOD being the omnipresent, present in the Soul, is the most internal object for him. So, the trances taking place on the basis of external objects (= Matter and its products) are called seeded trances. Of these Indistinct and Distinct cognitive trances have gross objects as a base for concentration and Meditative and Ultra-meditative cognitive trances have subtle objects as the base for concentration.
Query:- Seer Patanjali described four types of Cognitive Trances in aphorism 1.17. While explaining Seer Vyaasa had described that all four trances are "saalambana" which means having something to grasp i.e., the mind is colored with some object = subject. On the other hand, in this aphorism, only Argumentative and Meditative trances are said as seeded trances. There seems to be some contradiction on the subject.
Solution:- The base of this query is that it is believed that "saalambana" and "seeded trance" have the same meaning. Seer Vyaasa had described four categories of Cognitive Trances as "saalambana" in aphorism 1.17 and it is in no way in contradiction to aphorism. The four categories of Argumentative and Meditative trances take place on the basis of external objects i.e., the objects made of Matter and Matter. Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances also, take place by the concentration of mind, so, these are "saalambana"; but these two external objects are not made as a base for concentration, hence are not seeded trances. So, the subjects of concentration said as the basis of concentration in this commentary are not in the category of 'external objects' i.e., products of Matter and/or Matter, hence there is no contradiction to the facts explained in aphorism 1.17.
Acceptance of various objects like sense organs, mind, Matter, etc. as the base for concentration in Beatitude Cognitive Trance and acceptance of objects other than the Soul in Egoism Cognitive Trance, by other explainators, will make these two also, seeded trances. Such types of explanations are against the concepts of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa.
While explaining aphorism 1.17 we have given testimonial evidences for taking 'bliss' generated from "Mental-Luminosity" as the base of concentration for Beatitude Cognitive Trance and 'Soul" as the base of concentration for Egoism Cognitive Trance. Both these subjects do not come in the category of external objects. So, both these trances, though are 'saalambana', yet these are not seeded trances.
Most of the explainators under the influence of Vaachaspti Mishra and Vigyanbhikshu have categorized Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances, in the categories of Meditative and Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trances and explained them accordingly.
This type of explanation is due to the non-understanding of Vyaasa's commentary as a whole. Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had not described Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances in detail, since experiences gained / cognizance done in these trances cannot be given in the form of words, as in the case of Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances. These are subjects of experience, not the subject matter which can be explained in words or by inference by anyone. As, after eating honey, one can only say that honey is sweet and tasty, but he cannot transfer the experience done by him to any other person merely by words. Another person has to taste the honey himself to experience its taste. Similarly, one has to experience, the bliss and self, oneself. Mere verbal knowledge is of no use.
