Component Word : RRitambharaa tatra praj~naa.
Sutra in English : RRitambharaa tatra praj~naa.48.
Meaning in English : (tatra) On attaining the mental Illumination by the proficiency of Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance, (praj~naa) the mind = cognitive faculty of the Yogi (RRItambharaa) becomes full of truth i.e., retains the truth only.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : tasminsamaahitachittasya yaa praj~naa jaayate tasyaa RRitambhareti sa.mj~naa bhavati. anvarthaa cha saa, satyameva bibharti na cha tatra viparyaasaj~naanagandhopyastiiti. tathaa choktam—
aagamenaanumaanena dhyaanaabhyaasarasena cha.
tridhaa prakalpayanpraj~naa.m labhate yogamuttamam. iti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tasmin) On attaining the mental Illumination by the proficiency of Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance, (praj~naa) the cognitive faculty (yaa) which (jaayate) appears (samaahita-chittasya) in the concentrated mind of the Yogi, (tasyaa) that (sa.nj~naa bhavati) bears the name (RRItambharaa iti) "Essential Cognition". (cha) And (saa) the term (anvarthaa) itself expresses the definition since it (bibharti) always cognizes (satyam eva) the truth only. (cha) And (tatra na asti) there is not (api) even (viparyaasa-j~naana-gandhaH iti) a trace of false knowledge.
(tathaa cha uktam) And so, it has been said — (prakalpayan) Cultivating (praj~naam) the mind (tridhaa) in three ways of (aagamena) verbal cognition, (anumaanena) inferential cognition (cha) and (dhyaanaabhyaasa-rasena) practice of contemplation wilfully, (labhate) one reaches up to (uttamam yogam iti) the highest state of Yoga = Ultra-cognitive Trance.
Vedic Commentary in English : The yogi achieves the cognizance of the ‘object’ form of the Matter and its products by the superior perception in the Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance. On achieving proficiency in this Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance devotee achieves mental luminosity. It means that yogi cognizes the objects concentrated, in their true form. Similarly, the cognizance in Beatitude and Egoism Cognitive Trances is also, in the true form. In this state, the mind = cognitive faculty of the yogi is named 'Essential Cognition' i.e., cognizes the truth only. Since the cognizance in the Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance is without the options of place, time, and operative cause and also, without the mixture of ‘word’ and ‘knowledge’ form of the targeted object. Such cognizance alone gives the true form of the object; and cognizance of that period is not affected by the false knowledge in any way. Hence such perception is in the category of superior perception only.
For achieving the true cognitive faculty, a whole-hearted complete performance of 'shravaNa chatuShThaya' = Four-steps Realisation method, as explained in the commentary to 1.41 above, is a must. By verbal cognition i.e., by the study and listening of Vedic scriptures obtaining the true knowledge of Soul and Matter; then by inferential cognition i.e., by logical thinking confirming the subject which had been read or heard; then by the practice of trance cognizing the subject which had been heard = read and confirmed by inferential cognition = logical thinking. Knowing the nature, properties, and form of the object through direct perception in the trance is called cognizance. In this way by performing the 'shravaNa chatuShThaya' = Four-steps Realisation method, the devotee is able to achieve the highest state of Yoga i.e., Ultra-cognitive Trance.
Question:- Some of the teachers of Yoga believe that by having verbal cognition through the study of Vedic scriptures with regard to Matter and its products, one should directly go for the cognizance of Soul and GOD in the trance. Is it possible?
Solution:- Such type of advice is not proper for the devotee. The belief of such a conception means that the devotee should directly start from the Egoism Cognitive Trance and should practice achieving the Ultra-cognitive Trance. And the properties of Matter and its products should be confirmed on the basis of a study of Vedic scriptures and inferential cognition = logical thinking only, instead of having their cognizance in the Argumentative and Meditative Cognitive Trances. Such type of advice is not proper as per the principle of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa. Seer Vyaasa had clearly advised in his commentary to this aphorism that —
aagamena-anumaanena dhyaanaabhyaasarasena cha.
tridhaa prakalpayan-praGYaam labhate yogamuttamam iti.
i.e., cultivating the mind in three ways — verbal cognition, inferential cognition, and practice of contemplation wilfully, one reaches up to the highest state of Yoga = Ultra-cognitive Trance.
In the next aphorism (1.49) Seer Vyaasa clearly said that verbal cognition and inferential cognition give the general properties of the object = subject. Both of these streams of knowledge are not capable of cognizing the specific properties of the subject = object; further, the subtle objects cannot be perceived and cognized through the external sense organs.
Hence after the verbal and inferential cognition, by meditation, only the yogi is able to cognize the real form of the object. And without having the superior perception of Matter and Soul = cognizance in the state of trance, achievement of salvation is not possible.
Similarly, the false knowledge of Matter and Soul is said as the cause of bondage in the Saankhya Philosophy by Seer Kapila, as follows —
tadayogo.api-avivekaat na samaanatvam. (Saankhya 1.55)
i.e., the combination of Matter and Soul is on account of indiscretion i.e., not having real knowledge of Soul and Matter. This indiscretion is termed false knowledge in Yoga philosophy. In the next aphorism discretion of Matter and Soul is said as the cause for removal of indiscretion. Here the question arises that such indiscretion can be removed by studying and hearing of Vedic scriptures, then why should one perform hard for their cognizance? While replying to this query it is said —
yuktito.api na baadhyate di~NgamuuDhavat-aparokShaadrite. (Saankhya 1.59)
i.e., not to say off by verbal cognition, even by inferential cognition, indiscretion cannot be removed, as in the case of a person who is confused with respect to direction, his confusion is removed by sunrise. A person who is confused about the direction at midnight, his confusion is removed by seeing the sunrise; similarly, indiscretion is removed by real cognizance only. So, the cognizance of Soul and Matter is a must, through superior perception, for achieving salvation. Similarly, it has been said at other places —
na shravaNamaatraat tat-siddhiH-anaadi-vaasanaayaa balavattvaat.
(Saankhya 2.3)
i.e., by merely hearing the defects of Matter, a devotee cannot achieve salvation, since the eternal residual potencies of experience are very strong and effective. A person who has achieved desirelessness towards external enjoyment cannot achieve salvation merely by hearing = studying the nature and real form of Matter such as inanimateness, changeability, beneficial for others, etc.; and defects of Matter such as non-satisfaction even after the experience, sorrow-ness by destruction, non-stability, etc.; similarly defects of experience-ness such as rebirth, staying in the womb of the mother, fear of death, etc.; since the residual potencies of experience existing in the mind of a devotee are very strong which tend the person towards the experience of material enjoyments. So, without performing the 'shravaNa chatuShThaya' = four-step realization method of listening, logical thinking, meditation, and cognizance, the real discretionary knowledge of Soul and Matter cannot take place. In this regard, Seer Kapila had given the example of 'Indra' and 'Virochana'—
na upadesha-shravaNe.api kritkrityataa paraamarshaadrite virochanavat.
(Saankhya 4.17)
However, hearing the teachings is a must and compulsory, since knowledge cannot be achieved without hearing = study. But mere hearing is not enough, since even after hearing the teaching of truth, one cannot achieve success without logical thinking and meditation on the subject heard, like the Virochana. It means if one does not go for logical thinking and cognizance even after hearing, he will not be able to get the required results. As both 'Indra' and 'Virochana' had taken advice about spirituality from Seer Prajaapati; since 'Virochana' had not gone for logical thinking on the subject, so, he could not succeed in attaining true knowledge. But —
driShTaH-tayoH-indrasya. (Saankhya 4.18)
Out of two, 'Indra' had gone for logical thinking and cognizance on the subject, so, he was able to achieve true knowledge on the subject.
Hence it is possible that a devotee who had practiced the accessories of Yoga in his earlier life stages, may not have to spend more time on such practice in his present life. Since it has been said —
na kaalaniyamo vaamadevavat. (Saankhya 4.20)
There is no time rule for obtaining discretionary knowledge, some people achieve in the present life, some with delay, some at the earliest, and some in the next life, like the Seer Vaamadeva. Seer Vaamadeva succeeded in achieving discretion in the present life, on account of his practice in earlier births.
In this regard, Seer Vyaasa said in aphorism 3.6 as — "Ishvara-prasaadaat-jitotta-bhuumikasya cha naadharabhuumishu parachittaGYaanaadiShu sa.nyamo yuktaH" i.e., however, for him, who has conquered the higher planes (= positions) of Yoga by the bliss of GOD, Sanyama in lower planes (= positions) i.e., knowledge of other's mind, etc. is not required. It means if somebody had achieved some stage of Yoga in the previous birth, then by the bliss of the GOD, he may achieve the higher planes of Cognitive Trance without much effort. For him, it is not necessary to perform concentration and meditation in the lower planes of Yoga.
So, the devotee should perform the path as advised by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa without any options, otherwise without the cognizance of the real form of Matter and Soul at the trance level, salvation will not be possible.
