In English:
Component Word : deshabandhaH chittasya dhaaraNaa.
Preface to Sutra in English : uktaani pa~ncha bahira~NgaaNi saadhanaani. dhaaraNaa vaktavyaa —
Meaning in English : (pa~ncha) The five (bahiH-a~NgaaNi saadhanaani) external means of attainment (uktaani) have been described. Now (dhaaraNaa) concentration (vaktavyaa) is to be explained —
Sutra in English : deshabandhashchittasya dhaaraNaa.1.
Meaning in English : (desha-bandhaH-chittasya) Fixing the affairs = modifications of the mind on a particular place and subject or object (dhaaraNaa) is concentration.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : When the first five accessories of worship = Yoga are achieved, then concentration is also achieved. Concentration is fixing the activities of the wander-less mind on the navel plexus, heart, head = brain, fore-part of the nose, and fore-part of the tongue, etc., and repeating the "AUM", the name of GOD, and ascertaining its meaning. (Rigvedaadibhaashyabhuumikaa - on Worship)
Yogi should concentrate his mind on the places like the navel plexus, the lotus of the heart, the light of the brain, the eyes, the fore-part of the nose, the fore-part of the tongue, etc, and the external subject like "AUM" or "Gayatri Hymn". Since in aphorism 1.28, it has been advised that "Repeat the word "AUM" and to ponder over its meaning in the mind", and further in aphorism 1.27, it is declared that "the word "AUM" denotes Him and He is denoted by this word". So, "AUM" is the only to be taken as an external object and nothing else. There is no other proof on this subject. (Discussion of Swami Dayanand Saraswati with Pandit Taracharan Tarkaratna - as per "Rishi Dayanand ke Patra and viGYaapan" Part 1)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : naabhichakre hRRidayapuNDariike muudhirna jyotiShi naasikaagre jihvaagra ityevamaadiShu desheShu baahye vaa viShaye chittasya vRRittimaatreNa bandha iti dhaaraNaa.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (dhaaraNaa) Concentration means (bandhaH) fixing (chittasya) of mind (vritti-maatreNa) by means of modification in (desheShu) the places as (naabhi-chakre) the navel plexus, (hridaya-puNDariike) the lotus of the heart, (muurdhni jyotiShi) the light of the brain, (naasikaagre) the fore-part of the nose, (jihvaagre) the fore-part of the tongue (iti evam aadiShu) and the like places in the body, (vaa) or (baahye viShaye iti) external subjects like word "AUM" and "Gayatri Hymn" etc.
Vedic Commentary in English : After restraining the sense-organs from external objects by the practice of Abstraction, the devotee now starts the practice of Concentration, the first internal accessory of Yoga. Seer Patanjali said that fixing the modifications of the mind in a particular place is Concentration. Seer Vyaasa had clarified the term - "place" as the navel plexus, the lotus of the heart, the light of the brain, the fore-part of the nose, the fore-part of the tongue, and the like places in the body, and fixing the mind in these places by mean of modification is called Concentration. It means that the devotee, who has attained the capability of restraint of sense-organs, becomes able to fix the mind in various internal organs of the body, and it is called Concentration. It is further said that the mind is to be fixed in various parts of the body by means of modification. The mind is said to be placed in the lotus of the heart. In such a state mind gets connected with the navel plexus, light of the brain, fore-part of the nose, and fore-part of the tongue by knowledge, not moving to these places. So, the modifications of the mind are to be placed at the place of concentration, and these are to be fixed there. Along with the fixing of modifications of the mind on the various places of Concentration, the devotee has to make some subject = object as a base on which the mind is to be concentrated. When there is a meditation on this subject = object, and trance also takes place on this subject = object, then it will be called as Sanyama on that subject = object. (Ref - trayamekatra sa.nyamaH. (Yoga 3.4); and ekaviShayaaNi triiNi saadhanaani sa.nyama iti-uchyate. (Vyaasa on 3.4)).
While writing a commentary on this aphorism Seer Vyaasa used the words "bhaahe vaa viShaye", based on this, various commentators had prescribed the various 'external objects' as "places" for Concentration. But Concentration being the internal accessory of Yoga, it has no relation with external places. As various internal organs are prescribed for Concentration by Seer Vyaasa in his commentary, such type of reference to external places is not at all there in the commentary. There is no such internal testimony in the Vyaasa commentary. In aphorism 3.7 Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are said as internal accessories for Cognitive Trance. Even in Abstraction, which is the external accessory as compared to Concentration, there is a procedure to restrain the sense-organs from external objects (i.e., from sound, touch, form, taste, and smell) by the steadiness of the mind. It means that no external object, (by contact of sense-organs to sound, touch, form, taste, and smell), in any way, is made available to the mind. In fact, sound and others are the properties of gross objects, and the external objects ( = the gross objects and their products) become available in the mind through sound, etc. When the sense organs are restrained from external objects, then these do not become available in the mind. In such a case prescribing the external places, made from gross objects like earth, fire, water, etc. as places of Concentration, is not correct as per the conceptions of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa. Advising and prescribing the external objects as places of Concentration, to a devotee who had moved towards the internal modifications by Abstraction, will become going backward in spite of moving ahead on the path of Yoga.
Seer Vyaasa had not used the words "bhaahye vaa deshe" for the places of Concentration like the internal organs of the body but had used the words "bhaahye vaa viShaye" in his commentary. Hence external objects are not acceptable, as places of Concentration, to Seer Vyaasa, like the internal organs of the body. So, what are the external subjects? This is being answered by Swami Dayanand Saraswati — "and the external subjects like "AUM" or "Gayatri Mantra". Since in aphorism 1.28, it has been advised that "Repeat the word "AUM" and to ponder over its meaning in the mind", and further in aphorism 1.27, it is declared that "the word "AUM" denotes Him and He is denoted by this word". and it has been clearly said that "AUM is only to be taken as external object and nothing else. There is no other proof on this subject." Further in the debate, Swami Dayanand referred to the following aphorisms —
"bhuvanaGYaanam suurye sa.nyamaat (3.26);
chandre taaraavyuuhaGYaanam (3.27);
dhurve tad-gatiGYaanam (3.28)"
and said — "from the above aphorisms it is clear that Concentration etc. three accessories are internal only, so, the yogi cognizes all objects by yoga, which are in the heart, up till atom. He does not keep any connection with the external objects in Concentration even. But Concentration is related to the Soul, not to others. Those who say otherwise on this subject, that should be taken as false = wrong only".
Swami Dayanand had explained the yoga aphorisms while keeping the supreme target of cognizance of GOD, in mind. But for cognizing the various subjects, a yogi should concentrate on that subject. In this whole chapter, external objects are not accepted by Sanyama anywhere. As it has been clarified above that even the Sun, Moon, and Dhruva = the pole star also not accepted as external objects by Swami Dayanand; and apart from the above three, there is no external object in this chapter for Sanyama. Seer Patanjali had prescribed various subjects for Sanyama in the aphorisms 3.16 to 3.52, which are not external worldly objects = places but are the internal organs of the body like the navel plexus and heart etc, and other non-material subjects only. so, Concentration, Meditation, and Trance take place in these internal places and subjects.
For attaining Concentration, the advice of Swami Dayanand to one of his pupils is worth reading — "He asked Swami Dayanand that "mind does not become steady". Then Swami Ji had advised - "make it fix on a place." He said that "it does not stay. Is any object required to be concentrated ?" It was replied "No, if you cannot do this, then imagine any object just like the forehead of a nail, and concentrate on that. Then divide that object into two parts, and throw away one part, and concentrate on the other part. Keep dividing that remaining part and in the end, there will be a minute subtle part in the Concentration. Throw away that part also, and your Concentration will take place." (From the life history of Swami Dayanand by Devendranath page 569) From the above, it is clear that external objects and external places are not acceptable subjects for Concentration in the scriptures.
The conception of Concentration on external place = object came into practice at a later age. First of all, Vaachaspati Mishra had given such type of explanation in his commentary named "Tattvavaishardi". This conception had started due to the non-study of Vedic scriptures, and the availability of 18 Puranas in the name of Seer Vyaasa. Vachaspati Mishra had prescribed the Concentration of the beautiful physical form of Lord Vishnu, by giving the testimony of some PuraNa, till the stability of the mind is achieved. This type of commentary is based on the imagination of the physical form of GOD. In this regard, no such testimony is available in Vedas. In this regard, the following hymn of Yajurveda is to be seen—
siiraa yu~njanti kavayo yugaa vitanvate prithak. dhiiraa deveShu sumnayaa. Yajurveda 12.67.
Those who are intellectual, performers of Yoga and practice meditation, then concentrate on GOD by their Soul in the nervous system of the body, those who are involved in the acts based on Yoga, always increase their knowledge and pleasure-ness, these people always have glory in the intellectuals and receive the supreme pleasure-ness. (Rigvedaadi-bhaasyabhuumikaa - on worship)
Apart from the above, there are many hymns on this subject, some of which are 12.68, 19.91, 25.1, 25.2, 25.9 of Yajurveda, 10.75.5 of Rigveda, etc. Here there is advice on Concentration in various parts and the nervous system of the body.
On the other hand, Vigyaanabhikshu, who also had faith in the philosophy of Puranas, had not considered Concentration and Meditation on external objects = places such as the Sun, the Moon, and the physical form of GOD, as correct. He had given a reason for this - that Concentration will take place by restraint of all modifications of the mind. If this does not happen then having the only form of targeted object in trance, will be imagination. So, in this way modification generated by Concentration on such external subjects = objects will be a hindrance to Meditation and Trance. For this, he had given the testimony of 'iishvaragiita' and said - "the best mean of yoga is the Trance without any object as a base of Concentration, where the real form alone is cognized." In this regard, he had also given a testimony of garurapuraNa (also available at 11.29.40 of Kuurma-PuraNa) which is meant for Concentration on GOD during the time of Regulation of Breath. So, Vijyaanabhikshu had not accepted Concentration on external objects = places.
The intellectual who says and believes that Concentration is fixing of mind in an internal or external place only, cannot prove the performance of Sanyama in the case of following attainments, since Sanyama is Concentration-Meditation-Trance on a particular subject —
Aphorism Subject of Sanyama
3.16 Characteristics, secondary quality, and condition changes;
3.17 Division of word, object, and knowledge;
3.18 Residual potencies;
3.19 Knowledge;
3.21 Form of the body;
3.22 Fast-in-fruition and Slow-in-fruition acts;
3.23 Friendliness etc;
3.24 Power of elephant etc;
3.25 Light of lucid state of mind;
3.32 Coronal light = light in the head;
3.35 Notion of self;
3.39 Udaana breath;
3.40 Samaana breath;
3.41 Relation of ear and sky;
3.42 Relation of body and sky;
3.44 Form etc. of gross objects;
3.47 Act etc. of organs;
3.52 Moments and their succession.
For the Sanyama on all the above subjects, there is no advice ‘of any place’ for Concentration. So, for the persons who believe that Concentration is meant to be in a place only, for them, the conception of Sanyama will not be fulfilled i.e., Concentration in a place, Meditation on the same, and Trance of same, in the above-said aphorisms. Here Concentration-Meditation-Trance on a particular subject is possible only when concentration is accepted as fixing the mind on a particular place by modifications. And in such a case the modification will be primary and the place will be secondary for Concentration. See in the next aphorism itself it is clarified that - "tatra pratyaya-ekataanataa dhyaanam" i.e., Meditation is the uniformity of flow of knowledge of the subject which is base of Concentration. In the same way, while writing the commentary on aphorism 3.4, Seer Vyaasa had clearly said that - "ekaviShayaaNi triiNi saadhanaani sa.nyama iti-uchyate" i.e., when the Concentration, Meditation, and Trance are on a subject then it is called Sanyama. So, knowledge of a particular subject in the place of concentration is primarily advised.
There is no testimony in the Vedic scriptures for the Concentration on the external places = objects. By Concentration on external objects, restraint of modifications is not possible (which is the prime target of Yoga); so, the devotee has to start by cognizance of gross objects in the Argumentative Cognitive Trance in the beginning, then by restraining these objects he has to cognize the subtle and internal objects in the next stage and reach up to the cognizance the real form and properties of Matter in Meditative Cognitive Trance; and after that, by cognizance of Soul and GOD, he attains the stage of total restraint of modifications. It is to be understood here that out of gross objects becoming the base in Argumentative Cognitive Trance, earth, water, and fire and their products, visible by eyes, can be said as related to external places only; even the other gross objects cannot be seen by eyes even. These gross objects are the base of Concentration for their knowledge and are not used as "places" for Concentration. So, it is clear from the above that the external objects like the Sun, the Moon, and the Pole Star = Dhruva, etc. are not accepted as places of Concentration in the Vedic scriptures, and nor is Sanyama on these is advised. The real meaning of these bases will be explained in the respective aphorisms.

“(१) भुवनज्ञानं सूर्ये संयमात्॥३.२६॥;
