Component Word : tatra pratyayaikataanataa dhyaanam.
Sutra in English : tatra pratyayaikataanataa dhyaanam.2.
Meaning in English : (dhyaanam) Meditation is (pratyaya-ekataanataa) the uniformity of flow of knowledge (tatra) there = in Concentration.
Swami Dayanand Saraswati Commentary : After Concentration one should meditate on the Omni-controller GOD, who is subject-able for the Meditation, and enter in Him with full thinking and devotion like the river falls in the sea. At that time no other object = subject is to be remembered, but remain involved in the conscious form and knowledge of the GOD. This is Meditation.
(Rigvedaadibhaashyabhoomikaa - on Worship)
In the place of Concentration, the Soul who is the subject, and one-pointedness of mind, both should not remain different from each other — this is called uniformity of knowledge. When the mind is fully involved in the conscious form of the Soul and no other object remains known to it, then it is known as Meditation. (Discussion of Swami Dayanand Saraswati with Pandit Taracharan Tarkaratna - as per "Rishi Dayanand ke Patra and viGYaapan" Part 1)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : tasmindeshe dhyeyaalambanasya pratyayasyaikataanataa sadRRishaH pravaahaH pratyayaantareNaaparaamRRiShTo dhyaanam.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (dhyaanam) Meditation is (sadrishaH pravaahaH) the uniform flow of (ekataanataa) similar (pratyayasya) knowledge of (dhyeya-aalambanasya) object = subject of Concentration, (tasmin deshe) in the place of concentration, (aparaamriShTaH) untouched by (pratyaya-antareNa) knowledge of any other object = subject.
Vedic Commentary in English : Uniformity of knowledge of the subject of the Concentration is called Meditation. It means having a uniform flow of similar knowledge of the subject, taken as a base for Concentration, i.e continuing of same knowledge in the present moments, which was there in the previous moments and no other knowledge, of any subject, becoming present in the mind i.e., no other knowledge is arising in between, and in this way, a continuation of similar knowledge is known as Meditation.
Supremacy of Meditation is in the Meditation of GOD who is devoid of any worldly affairs and enjoyments. But before the achievement of this state, uniformity of similar knowledge of any subject is called Meditation of that subject. Seer Patanjali described various types of attainments, by Sanyama (Concentration, Meditation, and Trance) over different subjects, in this chapter. So, in the starting, the gross and subtle objects become the base of Concentration in the mind and those are cognized in such states.
Swami Dayanand explains the Meditation of GOD by saying - "After Concentration one should meditate on the Omni-controller GOD, who is subject-able for the Meditation...." i.e., GOD is the ultimate target of Soul, and HE alone is worthy of meditation and HE is worth to rely upon. "... and enter in HIM with full thinking (= by continuous and proper thinking) and devotion (= surrender to GOD) as the river falls in the sea..." i.e., as the river enters into the large sea and becomes latent in that, similarly conscious Soul should also enter in the omnipresent, conscious and blissful GOD and get blessed by his knowledge and bliss. "… At that time no other object = subject is to be remembered, but remain involved in the conscious form and knowledge of the GOD. This is Meditation." i.e., on being entered in the form of omnipresent GOD, the Soul should not even think about the Matter and its products, being avoidable, and should remain involved in the form and knowledge of GOD. This is the best state of Meditation.
But for the devotee, Meditation of formless GOD is not possible in the beginning. In this regard, the advice of Swami Dayanand is very important —
1. Query:- Without the form of an object, how can Meditation take place?
Answer:- There is no form of a word, but it comes in the Meditation or not? There is no form of sky, even then knowledge of the sky take place or not? There is no form of Soul, but Meditation of the Soul takes place or not? On cessation of knowledge, pleasure, pain, wish, aversion, and effort in the body, it is said that the Soul has gone away, even a farmer understands this conception. In the scriptures, Meditation is explained as —
ragopahatiH-dhyaanam. Saankhya-Philosophy 3.30.
dhyaanam nirviShayam manaH. Saankhya-Philosophy 6.25.
tatra pratyaya-ektaantaa dhyaanam. Yoga-Philosophy 3.2.
How can you meditate on the object with the form? Meditation of objects, with form, cannot be achieved till their properties are cognized i.e., it is not possible to have Meditation before knowledge. See various types of divisions of an atom can be imagined by the power of knowledge. If somebody asks what is there in my folded hand? Then how to meditate on the object by merely seeing the cover folded hand? In this regard, I need to say that there are other means of perception other than direct cognition to know that object. One is inference ... The inference is one of most strongest means for this purpose, even stronger than direct perception." (Updeshmanjari, Poona Pravachan, Fourth Advice)
In the above advice, Swami Dayanand very clearly stated that one should have verbal knowledge of the object which is required to be made as a base of Meditation. So, whichever object is to be made as a base of Meditation, one should acquire the verbal testimony of the subject from the scriptures and/or intellectual of the subject, otherwise, Meditation of that object will not be possible. In the process of the “Four-steps Realisation Method”, i.e., logical thinking, meditation, and cognition come after listening = studying. Concentration and Meditation are possible only after verbal knowledge. So, it is proper for the devotee to have knowledge of the form of GOD from Vedas and Vedic scriptures before proceeding to meditate on GOD.
2. The King of Udaipur had asked Swami Dayanand - "When you do not accept some physical object (for GOD), whichever form it might have, then what is to be meditated? Swami Ji answered that - "Meditation should not be performed by taking any physical form (= of an object). GOD is omnipotent, creator of the universe, the regulator of the universe in rule, controller, controller, and lord of such creations, and by knowing HIS such type of glory, one should meditate on the glory of GOD. So, remembering the GOD with such properties and concentrating on that, and explaining his glory, etc... this is Meditation." (Life-history of Swami Dayanand by Pt. Lekhram, Page 556)
With regard to Meditation, Seer Kapila was of the same opinion that making the mind devoid of all subjects other than the targeted object = subject. It is said —
raagopahatiH-dhyaanam. (Saankhya-Philosophy 3.30)
i.e., cessation of attachment towards worldly affairs and worldly enjoyments is steadiness = meditation of the mind. and
dhyaanam nirviShayam manaH. (Saankhya-Philosophy 6.25)
Meditation is when the mind becomes restrained i.e., not having modifications and is devoid of the authority of Qualities.
So, the target of a devotee is to maintain a state of mind that is devoid of all other subjects during the time of worship of GOD. The same conception is to be understood for the Meditation of other objects.
