Meaning in English : (pratyayasya) By Sanyama over the knowledge = modifications of other's mind, (parachitta-j~naanam) yogi gets the knowledge of other's mind.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : pratyaye sa.myamaatpratyayasya saakShaatkaraNaattataH parachittaj~naanam.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama (pratyaye) over the knowledge = modification of other's mind, and (saakShaat-karaNaat) by obtaining direct cognition of (pratyayasya) the knowledge = modifications of other's mind, (tataH) thus by that direct cognition (parachitta-j~naanam) yogi gets the knowledge of the mind of another person.
Vedic Commentary in English : When a yogi performs Sanyama over the knowledge of another person i.e., on the modification of another's mind, then by having the knowledge of those modifications, he is able to have the knowledge of his mind, i.e., what is the nature of his mind? There are five states of mind - disturbed, stupefied, occasionally steady, one-pointed, and restrained. Yogi by performing Sanyama on the modifications of another person, knows that what is the state of the other person's mind. and which type of modifications are dominating? and which type of modifications are secondary?
Bhoja, in this regard, had said that the yogi by seeing the face and attachments, etc., and performing Sanyama on such attachments, etc. gets the knowledge of attachment and/or aversion state of other person's mind. In the same way, the yogi is able to get the knowledge that the mind of another person is having attachment, aversion, illusion, ego, anger, jealousy, vice, etc., or is full of friendliness, kindness, happiness, knowledge, desirelessness, virtue, etc. But such type of knowledge has a limit and is possible to an extent only, which is clarified in the next aphorism.
It is also to be understood that the yogi is able to have the knowledge of those people's minds in whom he performs Sanyama; knowledge of other persons' minds is not possible.
