Component Word : baleShu hastibalaadiini.
Sutra in English : baleShu hastibalaadiini.24.
Meaning in English : (baleShu) By performing Sanyama over the power of elephants etc, the yogi gets (hasti-balaadiini) the power of elephants, etc.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : hastibale sa.myamaaddhastibalo bhavati. vainateyabale sa.myamaadvainateyabalo bhavati. vaayubale sa.myamaadvaayubalo bhavatiityevamaadiH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama (hastibale) over the power of an elephant, the yogi's power (bhavati) becomes as of (hastibalaH) the power = strength of an elephant. (sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama (vainateya-bale) over the power of the king of birds, yogi's power (bhavati) becomes as of (vainateya-balaH) the power of the king of birds. (sa.nyamaat) By Sanyama (vaayu-bale) over the power of the air, yogi's power (bhavati) becomes as of (vaayu-balaH) the power of the air. (iti evam aadiH) The same is to be understood in respect of other powers.
Vedic Commentary in English : By performing Sanyama over the power of the elephant etc., by cognizing those powers, by knowing the means to achieve those powers, and by adopting those means in his life, the yogi is able to achieve the power of the elephant, etc. Seer Vyaasa prescribed the achievement of power of the king of birds, the air in his commentary. But yogi is not able to achieve these powers by cognizing them on the mental level only. For this, he has to adopt the vow of continence, along with the other means in order to achieve those powers.
Query:- It is not proper to accept the power of elephants etc. in the human body. How is it possible to accept to have the power of an elephant in the small human body? In the same way, the power of the air is very extreme, which too cannot be accepted in the human body.
Solution:- See, whatever power is achieved in the human body, that is within the capabilities of the human body only. In Vedas, there is advice for achieving the wanted/desired powers. On Rigveda 5.52.5 Swami Dayanand wrote — "Men can increase their strength to any extent if they earnestly desire.", and on Rigveda 5.53.11 he wrote —"If men try to develop their power to the maximum, they can surpass even very powerful persons." In the same way, Kanda 3, Sukta 22 of Atharvaveda describes the various types of powers. In this sukta except for hymn 2, all other hymns discuss the power of the elephant. The summary meaning of the hymns is as follows:—
1. Let the power and splendor of the elephant should enter my body ...
2. Let the sun, water, air, and fire increase my power and splendor; GOD and all the divine powers who sustain this universe, bless me with the power and splendor.
3. The lustrous energy by which the elephant has grown so, powerful, ... O GOD! Bless me with the same energy and power.
4. As the power and splendor are there in the Sun, and elephant move by the power and strength, ... O Lord! vest me with the same energy and power as it is there in the air and cloud in the sky.
5. As far as the four-quarters of space extend, as far as the eyes can reach, that far and that high may power and splendor of body, mind, and soul, like the power of an elephant, be vested in me by the grace of GOD.
6. Of the animals, the elephant is steady, powerful, and comfortable. With the strength, vigor, and luster like the elephant's, I vest and raise myself.
From the above hymns, it is clear that man can achieve such power and splendor. And for the achievement of such power and splendor, Seer Patanjali had advised that one should perform Sanyama over the power of an elephant, etc.
In this regard, Bhoja had written "yasmin hastibale vaayuvege si.nhaviirye vaa tanmayiibhaaven ayam sa.nyamam karoti tat-tat-saamarthya-yuktam sattvamasya praadurbhavati." which means that when yogi performs Sanyama over the power of an elephant, etc., then the power of that object is vested in the mind of the yogi. Here he is referring to the power of the mind as he uses the word "sattva" which is meant for the mind, not for the body. On account of this explanation, it is more rational to accept the achievement of the power in the mind, not in the body. It appears that modern commentators had accepted such powers in the physical body when they had seen the example of the power of elephants etc.
Yes, it is appropriate to accept that it is possible to achieve various types of powers, within the limits of physical capabilities, and with the physical performance of means related thereto; and this is seen in the real world. In the same way, the power of the air is to be understood as strength of breath power, since it is not possible to act with the physical body as that of the power of air on this earth. It is more appropriate to accept the attainment of powers, by the performance of Sanyama at the mental level, at the level of mind only. From the life history of Swami Dayanand Saraswati, it is clear that by the performance of continence throughout his lifetime and by the performance of Yoga, he had attained various physical and mental powers. He had done such works by his physical strength which was not possible by the normal powerful person, and in many places, he had defeated his rivals only on the basis of his mental power, and in other places, he had shown physical power also.
