Meaning in English : (pravrittyaa.aaloka-nyaasaat) By the light of the lucid state of mind, the yogi gets (suukShma-vyavahita-viprakriShTa-j~naanam) the subtle, indirect = imperceptible and expanded knowledge of modifications of mind and objects.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : jyotiShmatii pravRRittiruktaa manasaH. tasyaa.m ya aalokasta.m yogii suukShme vaa vyavahite vaa viprakRRiShTe vaarthe vinyasya tamarthamadhigachChati.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (manasaH jyotishmatii pravrittiH uktaaH) Knowledge-full state of mind had been explained in aphorism 1.36. (yaH aalokaH) It is that light of (tasyaam) knowledge-full state of mind, which (yogii) Yogi (vinyasya) directs (tam) that light towards (suukshme vaa) the subtle, or (vyavahite vaa) the imperceptible, or (viprakriShTe vaa) expanded (arthe) modification and/or object and (adhigachchhati) thereby knows (tam artham) that modification of mind or the desired object.
Vedic Commentary in English : (In order to understand the secret of this aphorism, you must read the commentary on aphorism 1.36 before proceeding, where the light of the lucid state of mind is explained.)
As per Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, the yogi gets, by the light of the lucid state of mind, the subtle, imperceptible, and expanded knowledge of modifications of mind and objects.
The lucid state of mind had been explained in aphorism 1.36. In the commentary to 1.36 Seer Vyaasa said that the sorrowless state of mind of higher activity is two-fold — 1. higher satisfactory activity of mind, and 2. purely egoistic modification which is termed as the lucid state of mind. This sorrowless state of mind is described as - "tathaa.asmitaayaam samaapannam chittam nistara.nga-mahodadhikalpam shaantam-anantam-asmitaamaatram bhavati" i.e., the mind concentrating upon the notion of "I am" = conscious state of soul, it becomes like a wave-less ocean, calm, infinite, pure egoism i.e., only realizing the conscious form of soul. In the commentary to this aphorism, we had clarified that this state is the state of cognitive trance or just equal to that. The attainment from this sorrow-less state = lucid state of mind is described by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 3.49 as follows —
"sarvaGYaatritvam sarvaatmanaam guNaanaam shaantoditaa-vyapadeshya-dharmatvena vyavasthitaanaam-akramopaaruuDham vivekajam GYaanam-iti-artha iti. eShaa vishokaa naama siddhiH."
i.e., Omni-science means discriminative knowledge of the "Qualities" of all the forms = being the nature of all phenomena, existing in the form of characteristics of past, present, and unpredictable, and that too simultaneously This attainment is known as the sorrow-less.
By the light of the lucid state of mind, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had described the knowledge of subtle, indirect "object". And most of the commentators had taken the "object" as materialistic wealth and other objects. As per them, by the light of the lucid state of mind, a yogi is able to get the knowledge of subtle = atoms, etc. hidden and covered objects and wealth and objects under the ground, etc., and objects existing far away, etc. Even some commentators had accepted the knowledge of human beings along with the objects that yogi is able to get the knowledge person existing in far off places and able to hear them. Such a type of commentary is based on the commentary of Bhoja on this aphorism.
But after knowing the secret of the lucid state of mind as above, such type of commentary is against the conception of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa. By seeing such type of meaning it appears that the yogi while moving on the path of yoga, even after getting the nectar by the lucid state of mind, is involved in the attainment of normal juices.
Let us try to understand the meaning of this aphorism. The meaning of the words "sukshma", "vyavahit", "viprakriShTa", and "artha" used in the aphorism are explained in Sanskrit as follows —
"artha" — aryate praapyate.asau arthaH shabdaanaam vaachyo dhanam kaaraNam vastu prayojanam nivrittiH-viShayo vaa. (Unaadi-kosha 2.4, Swami Dayanand Saraswati)
So "artha" is used for wealth, object, cause, purpose, freedom, and modification of the mind.
Other commentators of unaadi-kosha had described "artha" as "dhanam vaanga-mayam vaa vrittih vaa" i.e., wealth and modification of the mind.
"vyavahit" — covered; unseen = indirect;
"viprakriShTa" — Existing far-away; expanded.
"SuukShma" — Subtle.
In the context of the above meanings, the attainment of the lucid state of the mind is to be understood in the following way. From "artha" object or modification of mind is to be taken; from "suukShma" subtle objects are to be taken; from "vyavahit" indirect = imperceptible knowledge of object = modification is to be taken; and from "viprakriShTa" expanded knowledge is to be taken. Bhoja had explained the aphorism in the context of wealth by seeing one of the meanings of "artha" as wealth, and others had blindly followed him. But after knowing the real meaning of a lucid state of mind such type of commentary is not correct. Now let us understand the attainment in the light of the above meanings.
In the lucid state of mind, when the mind is wave-less, calm, and is knowing the conscious form of the soul, then at that time, the yogi gets the "sukshma" = subtle knowledge of the modifications of mind; knows the "vyavahit" = indirect modifications which are not directly available; and "viprakrishta" = expanded knowledge of modifications of mind along with their origin and the cause is obtained. In the same way, this is to be known for the Qualities of Illumination, etc. i.e., the yogi gets the subtle, indirect, and expanded knowledge of all the objects = forms of Qualities of Illumination, etc. which are available in the past, present or unpredictable state.
Query:- This explanation is entirely different from the available commentaries. This is against the conception of Bhoja. In this regard, Seer Vyaasa, in aphorism 1.49, had clearly said that organs are not able to cognize the subtle, covered, and far-away object, which is referred to here also. And in aphorism 2.45, Seer Vyaasa referred to the knowledge of objects available in other bodies, at other times, and in other places. With reference to these statements, your meaning does not seem to be correct.
Solution:- In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali explained the attainment that is achievable in the "light of lucid" state of mind. In the commentary of aphorism, we have explained the secret of a lucid state of mind as per aphorism 1.36. Further, this lucid state of mind is also known as the sorrow-less state of mind, and attainment achievable of account of this state is also described on the basis of commentary of Seer Vyaasa on 3.49. On the basis of the above, describing the achievement of wealth and other objects for a yogi, who had reached the state of Egoistic Cognitive Trance, is just like moving on the backtrack in the path of yoga.
In aphorism 1.49, the importance of internal cognition by cognitive faculty, achieved by the proficiency of Cognitive Trance, is shown as compared to verbal and inferential cognition. In that aphorism, internal cognizance of a subtle, distant, and intercepted object, which is not cognizable by external organs, is explained that takes place by cognitive faculty. This cognitive faculty is achieved by the proficiency of Ultra-meditative Cognitive Trance (Ref aphorism 1.48 and 1.49 above). On the other hand, the realization of the conscious form of the Soul takes place only in the Egoism Cognitive Trance. Then how is it prudent to explain the cognizance of objects in the state of Egoism Cognitive Trance, which was cognized and known even at the earlier state of Cognitive Trance i.e., Meditative Cognitive Trance.
So here the knowledge in the lucid state of mind, is not related to wealth and other objects, but it is related to the subtle, indirect, and expanded knowledge of one's own modifications and Qualities; since after the cognizance of the conscious form of soul, yogi even becomes desireless towards the Qualities and move further to achieve Supreme Desirelessness, and starts efforts to bring his modifications and residual potencies in the burnt-up state. Both these acts are possible only after such type of cognizance only.
In the same way in aphorism 2.45, knowledge of objects in other places, bodies, and times is explained on the attainment of trance; this fact has no contradiction with the conception of this aphorism since there is no advice of any Sanyama there.
In this regard, we wish to refer to the commentary of Bhoja on aphorism 2.43 - "tat kShayaat-indriyaadiinaam suykShma-vyavahita-viprakriShTa-darshanaadi-saamarthyam-aavirbhavati", where such type of knowledge of subtle, distant, and intercepted objects take place by the proficiency of purificatory acts. When such type of cognizance is possible by the purificatory acts, then how can it be said as prudent for cognizing the same things at such a higher state of mind in the Cognitive Trance. So, his commentary is not correct with reference to his commentary on aphorism 2.43 and he remained far away from the secrets of a lucid state of mind. Hence it is correct to say about the commentators, who had blindly followed Bhoja, that they were not yogis and had not gone beyond the stage of the study, and had not logically thought about the secrets explained by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa, otherwise, such irrelevant explanation would not have taken place.

व्यवहित — व्यवधान युक्त; दृष्टि से ओझल = गुप्त = परोक्ष;
