Sutra in English : sattvapuruShayoratyantaasa~NkiirNayoH pratyayaavisheSho bhogaH paraarthatvaatsvaartha- sa.myamaatpuruShaj~naanam. 35.
Meaning in English : (avisheShaH) The absence of (pratyaya) notion of distinction (sattva-puruShayoH) between the mind (being the power of attaining knowledge) and the Soul, (atyanta-asa~NkiirNayoH) which are entirely different from each other, (bhogaH) is the ‘experience’, since (prarthatvaat) the mind exists for other. (svaartha-sa.nyamaat) By performing Sanyama on the notion of own object, the yogi (puruSha-j~naanam) gets the knowledge of the Soul.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (buddhi-sattvam) The essence of mind is (prakhyaa-shiilam) of the nature of Illumination, and that (vashiikritya) by overpowering (samaana-sattva-upnibandhane rajastamasii) the qualities of Disturbing Energy and Inertia, which co-exists in the mind with equal relation, (pariNatam) results (sattva-puruSha-anyataa-pratyayena) in the form of the notion of distinctive knowledge of mind and the Soul. (cha) And (tasmaat sattvaat) from that mind, (pariNaaminaH) which is changeable in nature, (anyaH) the other (atyanta-vidharmaa) entirely different object is (puruShaH) the Soul, who is (vishuddhaH) pure and (chitimaatra-ruupaH) in the form of consciousness only. (pratyaya-avisheShaH tayoH) The notion of indifference i.e., considering both as one and same (atyanta-asa~NkiirNayoH) which are entirely different from each other, (bhogaH) is the experience for the Soul, since (puruShasya darshita-viShayatvaat) the Soul is the viewer and experiencer of the object shown to him by the mind. (sa bhoga-pratyayaH) That notion of experience (drishyaH) is termed as knowable since (sattvasya) the essence of Matter (and its products mind etc.) are (paraarthatvaat) for another = i.e., the Soul.
The notion, (yaH tu) however, which (vishiShTaH) is different (tasmaat) from the notion of experience, and (anyaH) is other i.e., (pauruSheyaH pratyayaH) the notion of the Soul (= its own objective) and (chitimaatra-ruupaH) appearing as pure consciousness only, (sa.nyamaat) by performing Sanyama (tatra) in this notion, (puruSha-viShayaa praj~naa) the knowledge of Soul (jaayate) is born. But (puruShaH na cha drishyate) the Soul is not cognized (puruSha-pratyayena) by the notion = knowledge of Soul, which (buddhi-sattva-aatmanaa) is characteristic of the essence of mind. (puruSha eva) The soul alone (pashyati) sees = cognizes (tam pratyayam) that notion (svaatma-avalambanam) of the self based on himself. (athaa hi uktam) And so, it has been said — (ken) "By which mean = By what (are) oh! (vij~naataaram) the knower = the Soul (vijaaniiyaat iti) is to be known ?".
Vedic Commentary in English : (In order to understand the explanation of this aphorism, please go through the commentary of aphorism 2.20 and the form of Egoistic Cognitive Trance as explained in aphorism 1.17)
In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali had prescribed the Sanyama on 'svaartha' = "the notion of own object" in order to have the knowledge of the Soul. While moving in the life-cycle, the Soul remains in contact with the mind. Mind and Soul are entirely different in form. In the explanation of aphorism 2.17, we had explained the different properties of Soul and Matter. The distinction of mind, the first product of Matter, from the Soul, has been clearly established by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa. Mind is of three-fold Qualities, manifested by combination, inanimate and changeable; on the other hand, Soul is, devoid of properties of Matter, conscious, pure, unchangeable. After such a clear differentiation, the Soul is not entirely different in form from the Mind, since he appears, as of the form of modifications during normal worldly affairs. The Soul is said to be the "darshitaviShayatvaat" i.e., the viewer of objects presented to him by the mind. Being the viewer of affairs = modifications of the mind, cognizance of external objects is the experience of the Soul. And this fact establishes that the mind is for the purpose of others - since cognizance of objects and all the experiences in the form of pleasure, pain, and illusion are not for the mind, but are being experienced by the Soul only. Mind being an inanimate object does not have experience capability. So, the mind is serving the purpose of others. On the other hand, the Soul has a notion of own object, which means that experiences, so, received, are for himself only, and these are neither for the purpose of any other object nor the cognizance of any other Soul. In this way, against the functionality of the mind, the Soul serves his own purpose only.
So, till the yogi, even after knowing the others' purposefulness of mind, does not know the notion of own objectiveness of Soul, he remains away from the knowledge of the Soul; and appears in the forms of modifications and acts = behaves in that way only. While remaining in this position, he might achieve the verbal knowledge of the Soul by the study of Vedic scriptures or by hearing from teachers, but such verbal knowledge does not become the cause of his virtuous improvement or result in the cognizance of the Soul.
So, Seer Vyaasa said that - as against the notion of experience, the "notion of self" of the conscious soul is other. By performing Sanyama over that notion, knowledge of the Soul is born. In this regard Seer Vyaasa had clarified that the Soul is not cognized by the "knowledge of Soul" which is the characteristic of the mind, since it is not possible to have knowledge of a conscious object through an inanimate object (= mind); but the Soul alone cognizes that "notion of self" based in himself. In order to confirm this state Seer Vyaasa had given the reference of Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada 2.4.14 that - "By which mean oh! the knower = the Soul is to be known?" i.e., that knower is not known by any other means, neither he is known by the mind which is in the close association of Soul and instrument for all types of worldly knowledge and experiences, nor is known by other means. This fact is being clarified by Shabar-Swami in his commentary on Miimaansa-philosophy —
svasamvedyaH sa bhavati, naasaavanyena shakyate draShTum, kathamasau nidarshyeteti. on Miimaansa Philosophy 1.1.5.
i.e., that Soul is able to be known by self only, and cannot be seen by others; then how can we show him? There is a testimony of Vedic hymn in this regard that the knowledge of the Soul is not possible through the mind or sense organs —
apashyam gopaamanipadyamaanamaa cha paraa cha pathibhishcharantam.
Rigveda 1.164.31
i.e., I see the GOD, who protects all and is not cognizable by the mind and senses, and the Soul who roams in various life-states ....... (Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
Here the question of what is meant by 'sanyama on the notion of self '? is important. Without understanding this concept, knowledge of the Soul is not possible. Seer Vyaasa had given the reference of Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada in his commentary - "viGYaataramare kena vijaaniiyaat"; there while advising to his wife, 'Maitreyii' Seer YaaGYavalkya established that all the achievements = cognitions are for the purpose of Soul only. Maitreyii had questioned that -
"If I cannot achieve salvation even after availing this whole world with all materialistic wealth, then what is the use of this wealth? You advise me that, on knowing which you are leaving all this wealth." While replying to this Seer YaaGYavalkya said that - "Husband is not pleasing for the desire of husband, but is pleasing for the desire of Soul; in the same way wife, son, wealth, world, all materialistic objects, and others beings are not pleasing for their respective desires but are pleasing for the desire of one's own Soul. So, the Soul is worth seeing, worth hearing, worth thinking, and worth cognizable. Certainly, with the vision, hearing, logical thinking, knowledge and cognizance of Soul, all other things are known." In this way, he established the fact that Soul alone is worth knowable and, in the end, he said - "yenedam sarvam vijaanaati tam kena vijaaniiyaat-viGYaataaramare kena vijaayiiyaat-iti i.e., one knows all these objects by the mean of Soul; how to (=by which mean) know him? How to (=by which mean) know the knower?"
From the above, it is clear that all the affairs, knowledge, and achievements of the Soul serve his own purpose, not the purpose of others. Shabara-Swami had further said in the above-referred commentary on Miimaansa-philosophy 1.1.5, that in this way Soul alone knows oneself since other viewers (mind and organs etc.) do not have the capability of = power of cognizance of Soul. In this regard, he gave further testimonies as below —
"In this regard that 'Soul is known by self only', there is a testimony of Shatapatha-braahamaNa - "When one does not speak or his voice becomes silent, then what is his resplendence? O king! he has resplendence of Soul (= he is self-illuminating)." (Shatapatha 14.7.1.6); since he is not cognized by any other mean, in this regard there is also a testimony of Shatapatha-braahamaNa - "the Soul is not graspable, cannot be grasped" (shatapatha 14.6.9.28) is meant that Soul is not graspable (= cognizable) by others; How is he not grasped (=cognized) by other person or mean? On account of the property of self-luminousness. In this regard also there is a testimony of Shatapatha-braahamaNa - "Here the Soul is self-illuminating only" (shatapatha 14.7.1.10). By which means is he advised to others? For that mean, there is a testimony of Shatapatha-braahamaNa - Seer YaaGYavalkya said - "That is not he, that is not he = the Soul" (shatapatha 14.6.9.28).
In this way for knowing one's own form - 'that is not he' ...... i.e., on denying the parts of the body, modifications of the mind, objects in the form of smell, color, taste, sound, touch, etc., whatever is left - that is Soul. As the body is not the Soul; parts of the gross body are not the Soul; parts of the subtle body in the form of organs are not the Soul; the mind is not the Soul; each and every part of the body neither individually nor jointly is Soul; in the same way breath power is not Soul (since all these serve the purpose of others); the advice is that Soul is different from all these objects. In the same way, pleasure and pains which are experienced by the Soul are not the Soul or form of the Soul.
So the Soul is different from the modifications of the mind and objects, who serves his own purpose. In this way by performing Sanyama on the "notion of own object", the Yogi gets the knowledge of the Soul. Own purpose i.e., the purposes of experience and salvation are for the Soul only. And knowledge generated by such Sanyama is not known by the mind (i.e., such knowledge does not become the modification of the mind), the same remains based in the Soul only. So, knowledge of the Soul is not explained in the form of words in any scripture, since it cannot be expressed in words. One who achieves it, alone experiences it; but he cannot make others experience the same. As one who is eating a sweet tasty fruit, he can only tell others that the fruit is tasty and sweet, but he cannot tell the type of sweetness of the fruit in words or he cannot get others to experience such sweetness; one who wants to know the taste and sweetness of that fruit, he will have to eat that fruit only then he can come to know the taste of that fruit.
While explaining the Egoism Cognitive Trance in the first chapter we had clarified that when the yogi, basing on the discriminative knowledge of mind and Soul, makes the base of the Soul in the trance, then knowledge taking place in the Cognitive Trance makes the yogi become desireless even towards the Qualities of Illumination, etc. and such desirelessness is called as Supreme Desirelessness. After the state of Supreme Desirelessness, in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance, the yogi, becoming completely desireless towards the properties of Matter, cognizes the conscious form of the Soul and GOD. And this cognizance is known as the real cognizance of the Soul, nor of any state prior to this.
So, the cognizance on the basis of Sanyama over the "notion of own object", as explained in this aphorism, should be known as the cognizance of the Soul taking place in the Egoism Cognitive Trance, which is not the ultimate cognizance of the Soul, but it will open the path for the ultimate cognizance which will take place in Ultra-cognitive Trance.
