Ancient seer Meaning in English : (praatibhaat) By prescience comes the (suukShma-vyavahita-viprakrishTa-atiita-anaagata-j~naanam) knowledge of subtle subjects = objects, and their imperceptible and expanded knowledge as well as the past and future knowledge of the objects generated = made from the "Qualities" = Matter. (shraavaNaat) By attainment of higher hearing comes (divya-shabda-shravaNam) the hearing of subtle words and sounds; (vedanaat) by attainment of higher touch (divya-sparsha-adhigamaH) ability to touch the subtle touch is obtained; (aadarshaat) by attainment of higher vision (divya-ruupa-samvit) vision of subtle colors is obtained; (aasvaadaat) by attainment of higher taste (divya-rasa-samvit) cognition of subtle taste is obtained; and (vaarttaataH) by attainment of higher smell (divya-gandha-vij~naanam) cognition of subtle odors = smells is obtained. (etaani) These subtle cognitions (jaayante) are born (nityam iti) constantly in the mind of the yogi.
Vedic Commentary in English : After the knowledge of the Soul, by performing Sanyama over the "notion of own object", the yogi achieves the attainments of pre-science, higher hearing, touch, vision, taste, and smell. These attainments are as follows:-
1. Pre-science — In aphorism 3.33, it is said that the yogi is able to achieve all attainments of knowledge by pre-science. Pre-science is that capability of mind, by which yogi attains the knowledge of subtle objects, their expanded and imperceptible knowledge, and also knows the past and future knowledge of the objects created from the material named Matter. (Both these are explained in detail in aphorisms 3.16 and 3.25 above). So, by the pre-science, the yogi attains all the attainments of knowledge which are explained from 3.16 to 3.33, without performing Sanyama in the respective subject of the attainment.
2. Attainment of higher hearing — Yogi is able to hear subtle words and sounds.
3. Attainment of higher touch — Yogi is able to touch the subtle touch i.e., experience the touch of subtle objects.
4. Attainment of higher vision — Yogi is able to see the subtle colors.
5. Attainment of higher taste — Yogi is able to cognize the subtle tastes.
6. Attainment of higher smell — Yogi is able to experience the subtle odors = smell.
The above attainments are born in the mind of the Yogi constantly on a daily basis. Yogi does not have to put special efforts into these attainments and he is able to experience these subtle objects in a natural way.
Most of the commentators have accepted that these attainments are achieved, by performing Sanyama over the "notion of own object", before having the knowledge of the Soul. But there is no such reference for the same in Vyaasa commentary. Such conception is based on the commentary of Bhoja. But we should follow the principles of Vyaasa which are authentic. "Knowledge of self" is related to the knowledge of the Soul, not to the knowledge of organs = mind and their capabilities. One who referred to the attainments of organs by the notion of "knowledge of self", they have not understood the concept of "knowledge of self". Attainments of organs are also explained in aphorism 1.35, by performing concentration on the fore-part nose, etc. These purificatory acts were advised by Seer Patanjali in order to achieve the concentration of the mind. On the basis of these purificatory acts, the devotee achieves a concentration of mind and with that becomes able to achieve various Cognitive Trances.
On the other hand, after experiencing the "purposefulness of others" of all the objects of Matter, i.e., organs and mind, how is it prudent to accept the knowledge and achievements of organs and mind by the performance of Sanyama over the "knowledge of self"? It is true that on performing Sanyama over the "knowledge of own object = self" yogi achieves the knowledge of the Soul (this is the state of Egoism Cognitive Trance) and after such knowledge, he achieves such ability in the mind by which he attains the respective capabilities of organs and is able to cognize the higher activities of these organs as above. In the same way, the achievement of pre-science is to be understood. Yogi should keep in mind that such a type of knowledge of the Soul is not his ultimate target. Hence, acceptance of achievement of these attainments by Sanyama over the "knowledge of self" is against the principles.
