Sutra in English : udaanajayaajjalapa~NkakaNTakaadiShvasa~Nga utkraantishcha.39.
Meaning in English : (udaana-jayaat) By mastering over the Udaana, yogi (asa~NgaH) remains contact-less (jala-pa~Nka-kaNTakaadiShu) in the places of water, mud, thorn etc. (cha) and (utkraantiH) ascension at the time of death.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (jiivanam) Life is (samasta-indriyavrittiH) the operation of all the powers of sensation (praaNaadi-lakShaNaa) which is performed on the basis of the breath system in the body. (kriyaa) The movement (tasya) of the breath system (pa~nchatayii) is five-fold. (praaNaH) Praana is the breath system which (mukha-naasikaagatiH) moves through the mouth and/or nose (aahridaya-vrittiH) and manifests up to the heart; (cha) and (samaanaH) Samaana is the breath system (samam nayanaat) which carries the juices of food equally to all parts of the body and (aanaabhivrittiH) manifests from the heart to navel; (apaanaH) Apaana is the breath system (apanayanaat) which carries away stool and urine downward and (aapaadatalavrittiH) manifests from navel to soles of feet; (udaanaH) Udaana is breath system (unnayanaat) which carries = moves upward and (aashirovrittiH) manifests up to the head; (vyaanaH) Vyaana is the breath system (vyaapii iti) which pervades the whole body in every direction through the nervous system. (eShaam) Of the five breath systems (praaNaH) Praana (pradhaanam) is chief.
(udaana-jayaat) On obtaining mastery over the Udaana breath system by Sanyama, the yogi (asa~NgaH) remains contactless from (jala-pa~Nka-kaNTakaadiShu) water, mud, and thorn, etc., (cha) and (utkraantiH) ascension = upward movement (bhavati) takes place (prayaaNakaale) at the time of death. He (pratipadyate) secures (taam) that upward movement (vashitvena) under his control.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism fruits of mastery over the Udaana system of breath are explained. In the body, all the modifications = functioning of organs is based on the breath system. This breath system is divided into five parts in order to control the body. As per Seer Vyaasa, the five breath systems are as follows (please note that the names given in Vedic scriptures are used as nouns)—
1. praaNa — is the breath system that works from mouth/nostril to heart;
2. samaana — is the breath system that manifests from the heart to the navel and carries juices of foods to all parts of the body;
3. apaana — is the breath system that manifests from the navel to the soles of feet and carries away stool and urine downward;
4. udaana — is the breath system that manifests in the head and moves upward; and
5. vyaana — is the breath system that pervades the nervous system of the body.
These five breath systems are also described in Prashna-UpaniShada. While replying to the third question Seer Pippalaada said —
paayusthaane.apaanam chakShuH-shrotre mukhanaasikaabhyaam praaNaH svayam pratiShThate madhye tu samaanaH. (Prashana-upaniShada 3.5)
Apaana system of breath manifests in the anus and urinary system to bring down the stool and urine; Praana system of breath comes out from the mouth and nose and manifests in the eyes and ears etc.; Samaana system of breath manifests in the center.
hridi hi-eSha aatmaa. atraitat-ekashatam naadiinaam taasaam shatam-shatam-ekaikasyaam dvaasaptatiH-dvaasaptatiH pratishaakhaa-naadii sahasraaNi bhavantyaasu vyaanaH-charati. (Prashana-upaniShada 3.6)
The place of Soul is hearth. There are 101 nerves in the heart. From each nerve 100 branch nerves comes out. With each branch nerve, 72000 sub-nerves exist. Vyaana system of breath pervades and moves in these nerves, branch-nerves, and sub-nerves. And with regard to Udaana system of breath, it is said —
athaikayohdhva udaanaH. (Prashana-upaniShada 3.7)
And out of those 101 nerves, in one nerve Udaana system of breath moves in an upward direction. By performing Sanyama in the Udaana system of breath, two types of fruits are achieved—
1. Wordly Fruits:- Yogi remains contact-less from water, mud, thorn, etc. The meaning of this is that by performing Sanyama over the Udaana system of breath, which moves upward, the body of the yogi becomes so, light that it does not sink in water or mud and does not get pierced from a thorn. Bhoja further said that such yogi can easily move on water, mud, or thorns and remain contactless from these. In Yajurveda, there is a description of achieving power from the Udaana system of breath —
dhaanyamasi dhinuhi devaan praaNaaya tvodaanaaya tvaa vyaanaaya tvaa. (Yajurveda 1.20)
For the word "Udaanaaya", the meaning given by Swami Dayanand is "sphuurti-hetavaH uurdhvamanyate cheShTyate yena tasmai utkramaNa-paraakrama-hetave" which means Udaana = for the purpose of fastness = quickness and upward movement and power. So, the purpose of Udaana is meant for the purpose of physical quickness and power and upward movement. In the same way there is reference of Udaana system of breath in Yajurveda 22.33 - "udaano yaGYena kalpataa.m svaahaa". On this Swami Dayanand wrote that the breath system that gives power is used with the practice of Yoga and 'Yagya'.
In the same way in Yajurveda 13.19 the meaning of "udaanaaya" is given for the purpose of supreme power. From the above testimonies it is clear that by mastery over the Udaana system of breath, the yogi gets physical quickness, freshness, superior power, etc. Based on this physical quickness and power, we should understand the meaning of remaining contactless from water, mud, and thorns. By such type of quickness and superior power, such type of contactless-ness is possible.
If the meaning of such contactless-ness with water, mud, and thorn is taken as that yogi is able to walk just above the level of these things and remains contactless with these things, then it is just like the attainment of moving = walking in the sky (i.e., just above the level of these things) which is equal to the attainment of the ability to move in sky as described in aphorism 3.42. And if we accept that his body becomes so, light just like the cotton bud, so, that the yogi while moving on these does not sink or get pierced, then it is just like the attainment of buoyancy which is explained in aphorism 3.45. In such a way this attainment cannot be proved as distinct attainment. It appears that the commentators had mixed up the attainments of aphorisms 3.39, 3.42, and 3.45. If the intention of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had been the same, then they would have described it separately in this aphorism. In such cases, only divine fruits would have been enough i.e., upward movement at the time of death. Repetition of attainments is not done by Seer Patanjali. So, this attainment is to be understood from the perspective of physical quickness, and superior power as explained above.
2. Divine Fruits:- There is ascension = upward movement at the time of death. Various seers agree on this conception. Swami Dayanand had accepted upward movement in his commentary to Yajurveda 1.20. While replying to the third question in Prashana-UpaniShada, Seer Pippalaada clearly said —
athaikayordhva udaanaH puNyena puNyam lokam nayati.
(Prashana-upaniShada 3.7)
i.e., this udaana system of breath, which moves in one of the nerves (named as Sushumna nerve) of the heart, takes the Soul to heavenly places on the basis of his virtuous acts. In the same way, there is a description of cognizance of GOD in the state of deep sleep with the help of the Udaana system of breath. The same type of description is also available in Katha-upaniShada —
shatam chaikaa cha hridayasya naadyaH-taasaam-muurdhdaanamabhiniH sritaikaa. tayordhvamaayatramritatvameti viShva~N.nnyaa utkramaNe bhavanti. 6.16
i.e., there are 101 nerves in the heart, out of those, one nerve which is called Sushumna-nerve goes up to the top of the head (the place is named as 'brahmarandhra' in Vedic scriptures where coronal light manifests (Ref aphorism 3.32)). At the time of death, the yogi achieves salvation by moving out of this body, through that Sushumna-nerve. Moving out from any other nerve gives the adverse fruits i.e., the Soul remains involved in the life-cycle.
The udaana system of breath moves in this suShumNaa-nerve. So, upward movement is authenticated by Vedic seers, on having mastery over the udaana system of breath.
