Sutra in English : bandhakaaraNashaithilyaat prachaarasa.mvedanaachcha chittasya parashariiraaveshaH.38.
Meaning in English : (chittasya) The mind (para-shariiraaveshaH) can enter another body, (bandha-kaaraNa-shaithilyaat) by relaxing the cause of its bondage, i.e., the vice-virtue acts and their residual potencies by trance (cha) and (prachaara-samvedanaat) by the knowledge of the passage of movement of mind.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (manasaH) The mind, (loliibhuutasya) which is wandering and (apratiShThasya) unstable in nature (i.e., never remain fixed in one plane), (bandhaH) is bound down (pratiShThaaH) i.e., positioned (shariire) in a body (karmaashaya-vashaat) because of the power of the vehicle of actions i.e., residual potencies of vice-virtue acts, (iti arthaH) it is meant. (samaadhi-balaat) By the force of trance = Cognitive Trance, (tasya) those (karmaNaH) vehicle of actions and their residual potencies, (bandha-kaaraNasya) which are causes of bondage, (shaithilyam bhavati) are slackened, (cha) and (prachaara-samvedanam) the passage of the movement (chittasya) of the mind (eva) is also (samaadhijam) known by trance.
(karma-bandha-kShayaat) By the destruction of the bonds of vice-virtue acts (cha) and (prachaara-samvedanaat) by knowing the path of the movement (sva-chittasya) of his mind, (yogii) yogi (niShkriShya) withdraws (chittam) his mind (sva-shariiraat) from his own body and (nikShipati) puts in = get it entered (shariiraantareShu) in the another's body. (cha) And (indriyaaNi) the power of sensations = organs also (anupatanti) follows (nikShiptam chittam) the mind which has entered in another body; (yathaa) as (makShikaaH) bees (anuutpatanti) fly (madhukara-raajaanam utpatantam) after their flying king, and (anunivishante) rests in there (nivishamaanam) after their king who enters the nest, (tathaa) so (indriyaaNi) the powers of sensation = organs (anuvidhiiyante) follows (chittam) the mind (para-shariiraaveshe iti) on its entering another body.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainment of entering in another body is explained. Seer Vyaasa said that the mind is wandering in nature. Its existence or bondage in one body is on account of vice-virtue acts and their residual potencies. The slackening of those vehicle of action take place by the force of trance. Here trance is meant by Egoism Cognitive Trance, not Ultra-cognitive Trance. The reason behind this is that Seer Vyaasa had declared in Aphorism 1.1 that Cognitive Trance slackens the bonds of acts. (Ref - karmabandhanaani shlathayati. Vyaasa on 1.1). In the same way, knowledge of the passage of movement of the mind is also known as trance. In this regard, Bhoja said that the mind, with the means of organs, gets connected with objects through a nerve existing in the heart region, and this nerve is different from other nerves that perform the movement of breath and substances. By the knowledge of that nerve, the yogi knows the movement of the mind and thereby gets the ability to enter into other's bodies.
In this way, by slackening of bonds of acts and knowing the path of movement of the mind, the yogi becomes able to withdraw his mind from his body and get it entered into another body. The mind is the prime object of the subtle body, and organs also exist there in the mind only. (Ref - mansi hi sarve praaNaaH pratiShThitaaH. (Shatapatha-braahamaNa 7.5.2.6); and mano vai praaNaanaam-adhipatiH mansi hi sarve praaNaaH pratiShThitaa. (Shatapatha-braahamaNa 14.3.2.3)) so, organs also follow the mind and enter that body. In this regard, Seer Vyaasa had given an example that as bees fly after their flying king and rest in there after their king who enters the nest; in the same way organs also follow the mind on its entering another body. The Soul, who is involved in the life-cycle of this world, remains pervaded by the subtle body, which means that the Soul also exists in the mind. So, yogi = Soul also enters another body along with the mind.
In this way, Bhoja had accepted such entering into another body in the other dead or living body. But there is no such reference in Vyaasa commentary. As per Bhoja yogi is able to perform in that other body also, as his own body, and can act there. In such a case, some questions arise— On entering into another living body, as a yogi is said to be capable of performing acts in that body also, then what will be the position of the already existing Soul and mind in that body? Does the existing Soul in that body become secondary in nature; or move out from the body? Who will experience the fruits of those acts, which are performed by the Soul who had entered that body, - the actual performer (who had already returned back to his original body) or the Soul who actually owns that body?, and such type of other questions will arise. On the other hand, if a yogi gets himself entered into a dead body, then such types of questions will not arise.
The conception of entering into another body has also been accepted in Saankhya philosophy in the aphorisms 5.126-128. While explaining these it has been commented by a commentator that - "such entry into another body is just to show the performance of yoga power, not for the purpose of action and experience in that body and the yogi does not get affected by the acts and experiences of that body". For this Seer Kapila had given two reasons—
1. na buddhyaadi-nityatvam-aashrayavisheShe.api vahnivat. Saankhya 5.126.
- Existence of mind etc. in another body cannot be permanent in nature, i.e., it is not directly related there but remains non-manifested, just like the non-manifested fire.
2. aashrayaasiddheH cha. Saankhya 5.127.
- That body is not the permanent base for the entering Soul, since the actual owner of the body is already existing there. So, on the basis of these conceptions, the above type of questions will not arise.
Here one more question arises - when the yogi will enter into another body, his own gross body, in the absence of Soul and subtle body, will become dead, then will he be able to come back in that body again? It is nowhere accepted in the scriptures that a dead body can become alive again. In the same way, can the dead body of another person, be made live? In this regard, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had commented in the 3rd chapter of Light of Truth, that "somebody made dead-person live..." is impossible.
The answer to this question is - that the question of making any dead body live will only arise when someone brings back that Soul, which actually departed from that body, and makes him alive. Here yogi is transmitting his own Soul along with the mind and organs in that body, he does not bring back that departed Soul in the body again. In the same way, the yogi again comes back into his body again on the basis of his own yogic attainment, and this process is not performed by anybody else. Even Swami Dayanand had accepted the attainment in his commentary to Yajurveda 17.71, so, it cannot be treated as making the dead body alive.
Because of these types of questions, commentators following the principles of Arya Samaj have said that .... "meaning of entering into another body is meant by entering into another body in the next birth"; and others have said that this is not possible or explained in an optional way.
Seer Vyaasa had also described this attainment in the commentary to aphorism 3.43 by saying — "yayaa parashareeraaNyavishanti yoginaH" i.e., by which the yogi enters into another body. By this reference, the attainment is specifically described.
In the same way, Swami Dayanand wrote in the commentary to Yajurveda 17.71 —
"i.e., ...... the yogi, who attained the powers of yoga, by performing various means of purificatory actions, etc., can enter into the bodies of various living beings and can perform the acts of seeing, etc. through various eyes, etc. ......."
Here Swami Dayanand had clearly accepted the attainment of entering into another body. In the same way, we may refer to the context of the biography of Swami Dayanand, as follows—
"Swami Ji was in Meerut. Col. Alkaat and Ms. Blaivaski had come to meet him. They said - 'they doubt that Swami Shankaracharya had entered into the body of a king, who died on the same day. Swami Ji said that it is surprising that a person like Madam, who is an expert in Yoga, doubts this subject. He again said - I am not a yogi of the first category but of the medium category, but I can center my conscious power on any part of the body, which means that leaving that part other parts will be just like dead. If you want, I can show you this. When I, who is a yogi of medium level, can do this, then it is possible that a yogi with the higher attainments can enter his Soul in another body"
(Biography by Devendranath Mukhopadhyaya page 533-4).
Some of the intellectuals may raise questions on the authenticity of the above event, but Swami Dayanand had clearly accepted the conception of entering into another body in Yajurveda 17.71. Now explaining the meaning of this aphorism in an optional way, and thereby declaring the conception of Seer Patanjali, Seer Vyaasa, and Swami Dayanand as against the principle, is not proper. If we have reached that level, then declaring the attainment as wrong or against the principles is not correct. So, on the basis of the above testimonies, it is possible that a yogi can enter into another body.
