Ancient seer Meaning in English : (pratiShThaa) The base for (sarva-shrotraaNaam) all power of hearings (cha) and (sarva-shabdaanaam) also words and/or sounds is (aakaasham) sky (= the soniferous ether). (yathaa uktam) As it has been said — (sarveShaam) all those persons, (tulyadesha-shrava-Naanaam) whose organs of hearing are similarly situated i.e., situated at the same level of space, (eka-desha-shrutitvam bhavati iti) are able to hear the words/sounds existing at one place i.e., the same space level. (cha) And (tat) that (etat) the hearing ability of sounds/words of one space is (li~Ngam) the sign denoting (aakaashasya) the existence of sky = the soniferous ether; (cha) and (anaavaraNam uktam) absence of obstruction is also said as the sign of the existence of sky. (tathaa) Similarly (anaavaraNa-darshanaat) on seeing the absence of obstruction (amuurttasya) of the formless sky, (vibhutvam) omnipresence (aakaashasya) of the sky is (api) also (prakhyaatam) described.
(shrotram) The power of hearing is (shabda-grahaNa-anumitam) inferred by the cognition of words and sounds. (badhira-abadhirayoH) Of a deaf and a non-deaf (ekaH) one who is non-deaf (shabdam grihNaati) cognizes words and sounds, and (aparaH) the other who is deaf (na) does not (grihNaati iti) cognizes the words/sounds. (tasmaat) Therefore (shrotram) the power of hearing (eva) alone is an organ for (shabda-viShayam) making words / sounds its subject.
(krita-sa.nyamasya) By performing Sanyama (sambandhe) over the relation between (shrotra-aakaashayoH) power of hearing and the sky, (shrotram) hearing organ (yoginaH) of the yogi (pravarttate) is able to cognize (divyam) the subtle words and sounds.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainment of higher hearing power is described by performing Sanyama over the relation between the hearing organ and the sky. Seer Vyaasa said that the sky (= the soniferous ether) is the base of all hearing organs and sounds. All persons, who are non-deaf, hear the words/sounds existing at the same level of space. On the other hand, one who is deaf cannot hear those words/sounds.
The formless sky is said as omnipresent since there is no obstruction. Seer Kanaada had declared the sky as one substance (Ref - tatvam bhaavena. vaisheShika philosophy 2.1.29), which means that a sky is an object as a whole. The property of the sky is sound (Ref - parisheShaat-li~Ngam-aakaashasya. VaisheShika Philosophy 2.1.27). This sound property of the sky is available everywhere and equally, and on this basis, the sky is said as one object.
By performing Sanyama over the relation between the omnipresent object sky and the hearing organ, a yogi is able to attain the higher power of hearing. It means that he is able to hear even the subtle sounds of far away. In the commentary to Rigveda 3.55.9, Swami Dayanand said — "O people ! GOD make the yogi know the affairs of faraway place just like the mean of air ...". This is the description of the attainment of higher hearing power.
On the basis of this attainment, various commentators have mentioned the attainments with regard to other sense organs, such as — the attainment of higher touch capability by Sanyama over the relation between the organ of touch (=skin) and air; attainment of higher vision capability by Sanyama over the relation between the organ of seeing (= eye) and fire; attainment of higher taste capability by Sanyama over the relation between the organ of taste (= tongue) and water; and attainment of higher smell capability by Sanyama over the relation between the organ of smell (= nose) and earth. But there is no testimony in this regard. Neither Seer Patanjali nor Seer Vyaasa had written anything in this regard. In order to authenticate the attainment of higher hearing power, we explained the relationship between the hearing organ and the sky on the basis of VaisheShika Philosophy above. It is to be understood that the hearing organ is in the form of sky only, these do not have an effect of cause and work. On the other hand, the same is not true in the case of other organs. Whatever the material cause of other organs, that organ cognizes the specific properties of that object, as the nostril cognizes smell; the eye cognizes color = form; the tongue cognizes taste; and the skin cognizes touch. It is to be further understood that these organs are able to cognize the specific properties of their object at the place where such objects exist, not elsewhere. On the other hand, the ear is able to cognize the sound at the other places i.e., at the other places different from the place of its generation. For example, the color of the jar will be cognized through the eyes only at the place of a jar, not elsewhere; however, sound can be heard at far-off places, as the sound of clouds or the roar of a lion is heard by the people at far-off places. Here the mean, for such hearing, is the existence of one omnipresent sky. Such a relationship cannot be established with regard to other objects of smell, color, taste, or touch. Hence such a type of description is against perception and testimony.
Query:- You have denied the concept of repetition of attainments in aphorism 3.39. Here also the attainment of cognizance of subtle sound is already described in aphorism 3.36 in the form of "Shraavan" = attainment of higher hearing, so, this is also repetition.
Solution:- Attainments, explained in aphorism 3.36, are automatically achieved after performing Sanyama over the 'notion of self’; and no separate object of Sanyama is specified for such attainments. On the other hand, in this aphorism, the stress is on the specific relation between the hearing organ and the sky, and the capability cognition of sounds by the hearing organ, and there is advice to attain that capability by performing Sanyama on the relation between the two; and such type of relation between the other organs and their material object cannot be established. Hence it is not a repetition.
