Sutra in English : kaayaakaashayoH sambandhasa.myamaallaghutuulasamaapatteshchaakaashagamanam.42.
Meaning in English : (sa.nyamaat) By performing Sanyama (sambandha) on the relation (kaaya-aakaashayoH) between the body and the sky (cha) and (laghutuula-samaapatteH) on attaining the lightness of cotton etc. by cognitive trance, yogi gets (aakaasha-gamanam) the ability to move in sky.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : yatra kaayastatraakaasham. tasyaavakaashadaanaat kaayasya tena sa.mbandhaH praaptiH. tatra kRRitasa.myamo jitvaa tatsambadha.m laghuShu vaa tuulaadiShvaaparamaaNubhyaH samaapatti.m labdhvaa jitasambandho laghurbhavati. laghutvaachcha jale paadaabhyaa.m viharati. tatastuurNanaabhitantumaatre vihRRitya rashmiShu viharati. tato yatheShTamaakaashagatirasya bhavatiiti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yatra) Where (kaayaH) there is a body, (tatra) there is (aakaasham) sky. (avakaashadaanaat) By giving a room (tasya kaayasya) to that body by the sky, the body (sambandhaH praaptiH) is related (tena) to the sky. (jitvaa) By having mastery (tat sambandham) on the relation between body and sky, and (krita-sa.nyamaH) by performing Sanyama (tatra) in that relation; (vaa) and also (samaapattim labdhvaa) on being colored by (laghuShu) light objects such as (tuulaadiShu) cotton, etc., (aaparamaaNubhyaH) down to the atom, the yogi (laghuH bhavati) becomes light (jita-sambandhaH) by obtaining mastery over the relation.
(cha) And (laghutvaat) on becoming light, the yogi (viharati) walks (jale) on the water (paadaabhyaam) with his feet. (tataH) After that (tu) he, however, (vihritya) walks (uurNa-naabhi-tantumaatre) on the spider's web, and then (viharati) walks (rashmiShu) over the rays of the light. (tataH) Then (asya) this yogi (bhavati) is able to (aakaashagatiH) roam in the sky = space (yatheShTam iti) at his will.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism attainment of the ability to move in the sky is described. The body is related to the sky. Sky gives space to all the gross and subtle objects for existence; and in the same way, it provides space to the body also. It is also the base for the movement of the body. Seer Patanjali said that by performing Sanyama between the relation of body and sky and attaining lightness of cotton by cognitive trance, a yogi is able to move in the sky.
The movement and existence of a body on a particular planet depend on the force of that planet, which is described as a gravitational force by scientists and is described as the attraction power of the sun and planet in the Vedas. If at a particular place, the gravitational force is not there, then the body becomes weightless in that space, it will not require any base for movement and move in that space without any solid base, just like moving on the earth. Scientists have proved this fact by walking in space, where the gravitational force of any planet is not there. They are not able to prove any such capability in the body, but they are able to create a particular place as a zero-gravity place, with the help of machines, and can walk there without the base of Earth.
Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa describe this capability in this aphorism. Yogi performs Sanyama on the relation of body and sky, and by having Cognitive Trance on light objects i.e., from cotton to atoms in order to become of that form, and attain lightness. It means the yogi during the Cognitive Trance, becomes light just like the object on which the trance took place. This capability is just like nullifying the gravitational force of the planet. In this way, on not having the effect of gravitational force, the body of the yogi becomes weightless, and the yogi, first of all, walks on the water; then walks on the spider's web; then walks over the rays of the sun and lastly is able to roam in the sky at his will. Here it is to be understood that the scientist uses various instruments to nullify the gravitational force at a particular place, whereas Seer Patanjali accepted this capability in the body on performing Sanyama as above.
Scientists are able to move up from the earth level by use of helium gas; and such experiments give strength to this conception that movement in the sky is possible. If the scientist of the present age can perform this function with the help of instruments, then how can this attainment be declared impossible?
There is a description of this capability in Vedas, as in the purport to
prithavyaa.a ahamudantarikShamaaruham-antarikShaat-divamaaroham.
divo naakasya priShThaat svaH-jyotiaragaamaham. Yajurveda 17.67
i.e., "O people! as by performing of accessories of yoga and Sanyama, I move in the sky and move towards the lightening places; and attain the light of knowledge for pleasure from the divine places, so, also you do". (Swami Dayanand).
ayuktam suura etasham pavamaano manaavadhi. antarikSheNa yaatave.
Saamaveda 1217.
i.e., GOD has created the power of yoga in the mind of a yogi, who performs logical thinking and concentration, for movement in the sky; as for movement within the sky, the sun is made available. Here is a clear-cut description of movement in the sky by performing Sanyama.
vaayuna roha dharmaNaa. Saamaveda 1235.
i.e., O yogi! attain the powers of movement in the sky by performing accessories of yoga.
sa vaayumindra mashvinaa saakam madena gachchhati.
raNaa yo asya dharmaNaa. Saamaveda 1134.
i.e., the devotee who performs the rules of virtue, as prescribed by GOD, pleasure-fully moves as per his will in the air, light, sky, lightning planets, day and night.
From the above testimonies of Vedas, it is clear that the yogi becomes able to move in the sky by performing Sanyama as prescribed in this aphorism.
