Component Word : bahiH akalpitaa vRRittiH mahaavidehaa tataH prakaashaavaraNakShayaH.
Sutra in English : bahirakalpitaa vRRittirmahaavidehaa tataH prakaashaavaraNakShayaH.43.
Meaning in English : (vrittiH) The modification of the mind, which (bahiH) is distinct from the body and (akalpitaa) without the concern of the body, (mahaavidehaa) is the Great Excorporeal and (tataH) by that (prakaasha-aavaraNakShayaH) the veils of knowledge are destroyed.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : shariiraadbahirmanaso vRRittilaabho videhaa naama dhaaraNaa. saa yadi shariirapratiShThasya manaso bahirvRRittimaatreNa bhavati saa kalpitetyuchyate. yaa tu shariiranirapekShaa bahirbhuutasyaiva manaso bahirvRRittiH saa khalvakalpitaa. tatra kalpitayaa saadhayantyakalpitaa.m mahaavidehaamiti. yayaa parashariiraaNyaavishanti yoginaH. tatashcha dhaaraNaataH prakaashaatmano buddhisattvasya yadaavaraNa.m kleshakarmavipaakatraya.m rajastamomuula.m tasya cha kShayo bhavati.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : The concentration in which (vritti-laabhaH) modification (manasaH) of the mind is centered (shariiraat bahiH) on objects distinct from the body i.e., "Aum" and/or "Gayatri Mantra" is (videhaa naama dhaaraNaa) named Excorporeal Concentration. (saa) That Excorporeal Concentration (yadi) if (bhavati) takes place (manasaH) by the mind, (shariira-pratiShThasya) being remaining concerned with the body, (bahiH) in the distinct objects (vritti-maatreNa) by its functioning only, then (saa) that modification (uchyate) is called (kalpitaa iti) Fancied Excorporeal; (yaa tu) and, however, (vrittiH) modification (manasaH) of mind (bahiH) in distinct objects (eva) only (shariira-nirapekShaa bahiH-bhuutasya) without being concerned with the physical body, (saa khalu) that is called (akalpitaa) the Actual Excorporeal Concentration.
(tatra) Of these, the yogi (saadhayanti) attains (akalpitaam) the Actual Excorporeal Concentration, (mahaa-videhaam) which is also called Great Excorporeal (kalpitayaa iti) by means of Fancial Excorporeal; (yayaa) by which (yoginaH) yogi (aavishanti) enters (para-shariiraaNi) in other bodies.
(cha) And (tataH dhaaraNaatah) by the Great Excorporeal Concentration, (aavaraNam) veils of (prakaashaatmanaH) luminous (buddhi-sattvasya) mind, (klesha-karma-vipaaka-trayam) in the three forms of afflictions, acts, and fruition (yat) which are (rajas-tamo-muulam) on account of activity and Inertia "Qualities", (tasya cha kShayaH bhavati) that veils are destroyed.
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism, Great Excorporeal modification is described as destroying the veils of knowledge. Seer Patanjali said the "bahiH akalpitaa" modification is known as Great Excorporeal, and while explaining the term "bahiH" Seer Vyaasa had said "shariirat bahiH". In order to understand the meaning of this aphorism, we have to understand the meaning of "bahiH" and "akalpitaa" —
1. "bahiH" — (Normally it is explained as ‘outside the body’. Almost all the commentators have taken this meaning and advised the concentration outside of the body. Even in the explanation of aphorism 3.1, these commentators had accepted the conception of concentration outside the body, and as such, there is no irrelevance in the meaning of this aphorism for such commentators. But with such type of Great Excorporeal modification, the fruit of "destruction of veils of knowledge" has no relation with the concentration of an object outside the body. Since this conception is defective, it does not clarify the meaning of aphorism in the true sense. In the explanation of aphorism 3.1, we clarified the meaning of the external object. The meaning of this aphorism will be clear only with reference to the meaning of the external object, as above.)
In addition to the 'outside', the other meaning of "bahiH" as given in the dictionary is 'distinct from'; so, the meaning of "shariirat bahiH" is 'distinct from the body'. So, what are the subjects which are 'distinct from the body'? This had been clarified by Swami Dayanand in the context of aphorism 3.1 as - "Yogi should concentrate his mind on ....... the external subject like "AUM" or "gayatri hymn". So, "AUM" is only to be taken as an external object and nothing else. There is no other proof on this subject." so, when yogi performs concentration on external object i.e., "AUM" or "gayatri hymn" as above, then such concentration is known as Excorporeal concentration. In this state of concentration, he remains concerned with the body and concentrates on the external objects by the functioning of the mind only. And as such this concentration, being remaining concerned with the physical body is called Fancied Excorporeal.
2. "akalpitaa" = Actual Excorporeal — When this yogi performs concentration on external objects, as above, without being concerned with the physical body, then such concentration is called Great Excorporeal concentration.
The Actual Excorporeal concentration is achieved by the Fancial Excorporeal concentration. It means that the yogi starts performing concentration on the gross objects, and subtle objects, and moves in the opposite direction of creation i.e., from the working state of Matter to the Causative state of Matter, and merges the state of Egoism to the first working object = conception of Pure Be-ness, then at that state, the ego of this yogi ends. In this state, without being concerned with any type of Egoism, he performs concentration, by his pure illuminating mind, on "Aum" and/or "Gayatri hymn"; and this state is called Great Excorporeal modification. And by this Great Excorporeal modification, the veils of knowledge = afflictions of nescience, vice-virtue-mixed up actions, existing in the illuminating mind, are being destroyed; not in any other state before this.
Here it is to be understood that the yogi achieves this state by performing concentration, without being concerned with the physical body, and has to give up all the bases in the form of gross objects to Egoism, with the knowledge that these are the products of "mahattattva = Pure Be-ness"; and in such state, advising concentration on the external objects, by the various commentators, which are in the form of gross objects only, is the ignorance of this state. This misconception prevails due to not understanding the Vyaasa commentary in true meaning.
Seer Vyaasa clarified, in the commentary, that in order to enter the other bodies, the yogi has to achieve a state of Actual Excorporeal = without remaining concerned with the physical body. If the state of concentration is having concerned with the physical body, then he will remain bonded in the body and will not be able to enter into other body; and in the same way, if he gets concerned with that body, where he entered, then he will not be able to come back in his own body. So, it is most important to achieve a state of concentration that is unconcerned with the physical body.
The fruit of this Actual Excorporeal concentration is the destruction of veils of knowledge, which is not possible by a mere concentration of external physical objects. In Vedas, GOD is said as the supreme source for the destruction of veils of knowledge —
yuktvaaya savitaa devaantsvaryyato dhiyaa divam.
brihat-jyotiH kariShyataH savita prasuvaati taan. Yajurveda 11.3.
In the purport to this hymn Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote - "When we concentrate on GOD, who makes us know the objects of yoga, and have the light of knowledge and divine qualities; this can be achieved by others also".
saakamukSho marjayanta svaasaaro dasha dhiirasya dhiitayo dhanutriiH.
hariH paryadravajjaaH suuryasya droNam nanakShe atyo na vaajii. Saamveda 1418.
i.e., when the work and sense organs of the yogi get purified by concentration, and affecting all by the mean of concentration of "AUM", and surrender all the acts to the GOD, then GOD, who is the giver of spiritual knowledge, becomes blissful and become cognizable in the heart.
It is clear from the above that the afflictions can be destroyed by the communion of GOD only, it is not possible by any other means i.e., by concentrating on any external object which is outside this body. In this reference, we may refer to the commentary of aphorism 1.32, where it is clarified that restraint of all the obstacles and companions of distractions is possible by the concentration of GOD only, not by any other means. In the same way, it is said in muNDaka-upaniShada —
bhidyate hridaya-granthiH-chhidyante sarvasa.nshayaa. kShiiyante chaasya karmaaNi tasmin driShTe paraavare. muNDaka-upaniShada 2.2.8.
After explaining the means of knowledge of GOD, now the properties of a knower of GOD are explained - "On cognizance of GOD, who is not cognizable by senses, distinct from the organs and objects, all the knots of ignorance in the heart of this devotee get destroyed and all his confusions get solved and his virtue-vice-mixed-up acts also get destroyed".
From the above testimonies, it is clear that "AUM" and "Gayatri hymn" are the only external objects where concentration is to be performed to achieve the Great Excorporeal modification, which will result in the destruction of veils of knowledge existing in the illuminating mind in the form of afflictions, acts, and fruition on account Qualities of Activity and Inertia.
