Sutra in English : janmauShadhimantratapaHsamaadhijaaH siddhayaH.1.
Meaning in English : (siddhayaH) Attainments are (janma-aushadhi-mantra-tapaH-samaadhijaaH) by birth, medicines, incantations, purificatory action, and trance.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : dehaantaritaa janmanaa siddhiH. auShadhibhirasurabhavaneShu rasaayanenetyevamaadiH. mantrairaakaashagamanaaNimaadilaabhaH. tapasaa sa.mkalpasiddhiH kaamaruupii yatra tatra kaamaga ityevamaadiH. samaadhijaaH siddhayo vyaakhyaataaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (siddhiH) Attainment (dehaantaritaa) received in the next body after the present birth i.e., in the next birth is (janmanaa) called attainment by birth.
Attainments (rasaayanena iti evam aadiH) by elixir = medicated chemicals and other means to strengthen the body (asura-bhavaneShu) in the places to strengthen the breath-system = i.e., hospitals are called (aushadhibhiH) attainment by medicines.
(mantraiH) By incantation, (aakaasha-gamana-aNimaadilaabhaH) movement in the sky and attainments of attenuation, etc. are achieved.
(tapasaa) By purificatory action, the yogi gets (sa~Nkalpa-siddhiH) achievement by wishes i.e., (kaamaruupii) he takes the form of his wish and (yatra tatra kaamaga) goes everywhere as per his liking and (iti evam aadiH) also the fulfillment of true wishes.
(samaadhijaaH siddhayaH) Attainments born of trance (vyaakhyaataaH) have been described in the last chapter.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism of the previous chapter, equality of purity of mind and Soul is prescribed for attaining salvation. In fact, the Soul is pure by his form alone but becomes impure on account of afflictions of nescience, etc. existing in the mind. When this impurity is totally removed by bringing afflictions in the burnt-up state, then the mind also becomes pure similar to that of the Soul.
The mind remains related to the Soul till the end of creation or until the state of bondage exists. The various attainments described in the last chapter are primarily achieved on the basis of mind only. Seer Patanjali described the science of mind in this chapter. The soul receives experience and fruition of actions on the base of the mind only which is the companion of the Soul in the life-cycle of death-life-death since eternity; in the same way, he also achieves various attainments on the base of the mind alone.
Seer Patanjali said that attainments to the Soul are received by birth, medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance. The level of knowledge achieved in the last birth is the main cause for attainments received by birth. The fact behind this conception is that devotions performed in any life-state do not go to waste, but these result in various attainments in the coming lives. So, the person is able to achieve various states of mind in the above five ways. The mental level created by trance is the best one since there is an absence of residual potencies (Ref - tatra dhyaanajam-anaashayam. Yoga 4.6). From this, it is to be understood that the mental levels created on account of birth, medicines, incantation, and purificatory action, are inferior to those created by trance. So, the causes of medicine, incantation, and purificatory action are to be accepted as different from meditation = trance. The attainments explained in the aphorism are to be understood as follows —
1. Attainments by birth:- Which is received by birth, that is called attainment by birth. For such types of attainments, one is not required to make specific efforts in the present life. The base of these attainments is the vehicle of action accumulated in the previous life-states. In fact, the next life-state is received on the basis of one's vehicle of action. Seer Yama said in Katha-UpaniShada as —
yonimanye prapadyante shariiratvaaya dehinaH. sthaaNumanye.anusa.nyanti yathaa-karma yathaashrutam. Katha-UpniShada 5.7.
i.e., the person, other than those who have cognized GOD, moves to the life-states of human or various bodies, being bonded by his residual potencies, on the basis of acts performed by him, and knowledge of scriptures achieved by him; and those who had performed tremendous vicious acts only, receive the bodies of trees, etc.
In the same way it has been said in Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada as —
tadyathaa peshaskaarii peshaso maatraamupaadaayaanyannavataram kalyaaNataram ruupam tanuta evam-evaayamaatmedam shariiram nihatya.avidyaam gamayitvaanyannavataram kalyaaNataram ruupam kurute pitryam vaa gaandharvam vaa daivyam vaa praajaapatyam vaa braahmam vaa.anyeShaam vaa bhuutaanaam.
Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada 4.4.4.
i.e., as the goldsmith creates new and beautiful ornaments by taking a small amount of pure gold; so, this Soul also, by removing the impurities of nescience, occupy the bodies of intellectual, devotees, etc. in the coming birth, and those who have not removed the impurities of nescience they move in the bodies of other living beings.
Seer Gautam also said in his Nyaaya aphorism as —
puurvakrita-phalaanubandhaat tadutpattiH. Nyaaya Philosophy 3.2.64.
i.e., on the basis of acts performed in the previous life-states and the practice of yoga, trance is achieved.
This fact is also declared in the purport to hymn 17.75 of Yajurveda by Swami Dayanand Saraswati — "In the world on account of potencies of yoga, Soul gets the honored and pure life-state; he becomes curious of yoga only on the basis of dominance of his potencies, and those who serve him, they also become curious of yoga. They all burn their impurities in the same way as the fire burns the fuel".
In this way, the next life is achieved on account of acts performed and knowledge achieved in the present life, and the achievements and attainments received on account of capacities of mind and body in that next life are known as attainments by birth. An example of this is given of Seer Kapila who had achieved knowledge and virtuous qualities in a short duration. In the same way, some people are able to achieve desirelessness and distinctive knowledge in a short duration as compared to other performers of yoga accessories is an example of attainment by birth.
2. Attainments by medicines:- The bodily and mental strength and capacities achieved by the use of medicines, and enjoyment of pleasure thereby are known as attainments by medicines. There are references for the use of elixir in Ayurveda for bodily strength. In the same way, the use of many medicines i.e., Trifala-kalpa and Garlic-kalpa as prescribed in Ayurveda, results in an overall change in the strength of the body.
Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the use of elixir in "asurabhavaneShu". On the basis of this most of the commentators have mentioned the use of elixir at the places of "asura" (= said to be known as the vicious person in Purana). As per Sanskrit root, the meaning of "asu" is breath, so, the meaning of "asura" is one that strengthens the breath. So, the "asurabhavaneShu" is the place where the breath is strengthened which is known as a hospital in the present time. So, in the hospital use of medicines, etc. in order to save and strengthen the breath of a person, and thereby the person is becoming fit and efficient by body and mind is termed as attainment by medicines.
In this way by use of medicines and elixirs, rejuvenation and strengthening of the body and stability of mind are also seen. So, the use of medicine indirectly affects the stability of the mind also, which is an indication of the creation of a different level of mental state.
3. Attainments by incantation:- Seer Vyaasa said that by incantation one achieves the movement in the sky and attainments of attenuation etc. In this regard, commentators have advised the repetition of "gayatri hymn" etc. On the other hand, Seer Patanjali had advised Sanyama over the relation of body and sky for movement in the sky in aphorism 3.42; and in aphorism 3.45 mastery over the gross elements is advised for attainments of attenuation, etc. Here in this aphorism, there is clear advice on the incantation of specific hymns for these attainments. If such attainments would have been possible by mere incantation only, then there was no need to prescribe the typical Sanyama in aphorisms 3.42 and 3.45 above. So, incantation does not mean repetition of hymns only, we are to understand the secret behind this advice.
In this regard, a reference from Light of Truth (= Satyaartha Prakash) of Swami Dayanand is to be seen, which is given in chapter 11 as follows:-
"Q. - Is it true that the ancients knew the use of firearms, such as Agneyastra, about which we read in ancient Sanskrit literature? Were cannons and muskets known to the ancients or not?
A. - Yes, it is true. Guns and firearms were used in ancient times. The Agneyastra and the like weapons can be manufactured by the application of scientific principles.
Q. - Were they brought into existence through magical formulae sanctified by the Gods?
A. - No, the methods of manufacturing these weapons evolved as the result of deep thought (mantra). But mere pronouncing of mantra, which is nothing but a collection of words, cannot produce a substance. Were anyone saying that the chanting of a mantra (or a hymn) can produce fire, he may be asked why it should not burn the throat and tongue of the person who recites it. How funny that a person should burn himself to death while meditating on the death of his enemy. A mantra literally means the power of thought, hence Rajamantri, from Raja - the state, and mantri - one who thinks) is one who thinks over the affairs of a State and is the King’s adviser. Thus, men after deep study acquire a knowledge of the laws of nature, and by the proper application thereof make many discoveries in the domain of art and invented machines."
So, the first hymn i.e., thinking and then by application through material science, achievement of the above attainments is possible. In Vedas, there are hymns for the "science of plane". Firstly, by acquiring knowledge from those hymns and implementing that through material science, planes can be created and movement in the sky is possible through those planes. (Ref - Swami Dayanand Saraswati had established knowledge of planes by hymns of Rigveda 1.116.3-6, 1.34.2,7, 1.46.7-9, 1.85.4, 1.164.47-48 in his work Rigvedaadibhaashya-bhuumika - Chapter on "Nauvimaana-Vidyaavishayah"). In the same way, we have described the importance of material science for the attainments of attenuation in aphorism 3.45 above.
4. Attainments by purificatory action:- The meaning of purificatory action is the endurance of the pairs of opposites = pleasure-pain, heat-cold, honor-insult, etc. for performing accessories of yoga. The fruits of this purificatory action are the destruction of impurities of the body, mind, and organs (Yoga 2.43). In his commentary on that aphorism Seer Vyaasa said - "By the destruction of impurities of the mind, yogi achieves attainments of the body named as attainments of attenuation, etc."
Here in his commentary on this aphorism, he said - "by purificatory action, the yogi gets achievements by wishes i.e., he takes the form of his wish and goes everywhere as per his liking and fulfillment of true wishes". In fact, the achievement of wishes takes place as the result of the destruction of impurities of the body and organs, i.e., he is able to fulfill his true wishes. For this reason, this is called attainment by purificatory action. As, in the way, the purificatory action is indirectly related to the attainments of attenuation, etc., so, in the same way, it is related to the fulfillment of wishes. By the performance of purificatory action, the mind of the yogi comes to a state of devoid of impurities of afflictions.
There is chapter 8.2 on the fulfillment of desires in chhandogya-upaniShada. In 8.1.5 of this UpaniShada, GOD is said to be one whose wishes and desires are true only. Those who know GOD, and perform according to Him, achieve the places and wishes as desired. In this chapter, it has been said that "if he wishes to desire of place of intellectuals, then achieves the same as per his desire and experience the pleasure and glory of that place", in the same way, he can achieve the places of various desires, and in the end, it is said that he achieves all those places which he desires and become enriched by that place and experience the glory of that place. Here the fulfillment of the desires of a yogi is described on the basis of knowledge of GOD. Attainments by purificatory action are also to be understood with the same reference.
5. Attainments by trance:- Various types of attainment born of trance are explained in the last chapter.
It has to be kept in mind that a specific mental level of mind is created by the above type of attainments. So, in the above way, there are five types of the mental level of the mind for a person i.e., the yogi is able to create his mind in five ways.
