Preface to Sutra in English : katham —
Meaning in English : (katham) How the existence of the Soul is accepted —
Sutra in English : chiterapratisa.mkramaayaastadaakaaraapattau svabuddhisa.mvedanam.22.
Meaning in English : (chiteH) The power of consciousness = the Soul, (aprati-sa.nkramaayaaH) which does not get mixed up with mind and/or does not move from object to object, (sva-buddhi-samvedanam) knows his mind and its objects (tadaakaaraapattau) by getting related to that colored mind.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : apariNaaminii hi bhoktRRishaktirapratisa.mkramaa cha pariNaaminyarthe pratisa.mkraanteva tad vRRittimanupatati. tasyaashcha praaptachaitanyopagrahasvaruupaayaa buddhivRRitteranukaaramaatratayaa buddhivRRittyavishiShTaa hi j~naanavRRittiraakhyaayate. tathaa choktam—

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (hi) Since (bhoktri-shaktiH) the power of enjoyer = experiencer i.e., the Soul (apariNaaminii) which is not changeable (cha) and (aprati-sa~Nkramaa) does not move from object to object and never get mixed up with the mind, (prati-sa~Nkraantaa iva) becomes like the mover (pariNaamini arthe) towards the changeable mind, (anupatati) follows (tad vrittim) its modifications; (cha) and (anukaara-maatratayaa) by following (tasyaaH) that (buddhi-vritteH) modification of mind, (praapta-chaitanya-upgraha-svaruupaayaaH) which assumes the conscious form on getting contacted by the power of consciousness = soul, (j~naana-vrittiH) the modification of consciousness (aakhyaayate) is called (avishiShTaaH hi) as identical to that of (buddhi-vrittiH) modification of the mind.
(tathaa cha uktam) And so, it has been said — (guhaa) The cave (yasyaam) in which (shaashvatam brahma) the eternal supreme soul GOD (nihitam) is placed, is (na paataalam) neither world (cha) and (na) nor (giriiNaam vivaram) mountain caves, (na eva andhakaaram) nor darkness (na udadhiinaam kukShayaH) nor the base of the sea; but (kavayaH) the intellect (vedayante) interpret it as the (avishiShTaam buddhi-vrittim iti) modification of mind which does not appear different from Soul.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the previous aphorism, the topic of discussion was that if we accept the mind as the experiencer of modifications, then there would be no need to accept the conscious Soul. This conception of Idealistic and believers of momentary theory was abrogated by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa in the last aphorism. In the last aphorism, it is established that by the word "self" we accept the conscious Soul in the Vedic scriptures, even in the philosophies of Saankhya and Yoga; and the Soul alone is the experiencer and viewer of mind. Now how that conscious Soul is the experiencer, is clarified by this aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that the unchangeable Soul does not get mixed up with the mind, by having relations with the colored mind, becomes the knower and experiencer of objects/subjects and mind.
The conscious Soul is said as "apratisa.nkramaa" which means that he does not get mixed up with the mind and does not move from object to object. (Ref - our commentary on aphorism 1.2) He does not get mixed with the form of any other object. On the other hand, inanimate objects have different properties, such as —
1. Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia change in the primary-secondary way to form an object, and get mixed up i.e., take the form of primary Quality (Ref - pratyayam-antareNaikatamasya vrittimanuvarttamaanaaH pradhaana shabdavaachyaa bhavanti. Vyaasa on 2.18); or as
2. Elements being mixed up in different combinations get manifested in the form of an object.
However conscious Soul is without any property of mixing up, so, he is also called unchangeable. On the other hand, Qualities are said as changeable, since getting changed into different forms, and such changes are for the experience and salvation of the Soul. How does the conscious Soul have knowledge of objects/subjects? In this regard, it is said that the conscious Soul becomes like the mover towards the changeable mind, follows the modifications of the mind, and with a result gets the knowledge of modifications. The inanimate mind, by its contact with the conscious Soul, assumes the conscious form; and by following the modifications of that mind, the modifications of the mind become the modification of the Soul as a modification of consciousness, as in the case of worldly affairs, the modifications of "I am angry", "I am attached to that object", "I am having illusion", "I am afraid" etc. proves the above situation. Since all the modification exist in the mind, but Soul assumes them in himself and act accordingly.
So as the mind gets colored with different subjects/objects, the Soul gets the knowledge of those subjects/objects. But the coloring of the mind does not take place automatically, since the mind is inanimate. The mind, by having its contact with the Soul and by his inspiration and therefore by assuming the conscious form, gets in contact with the external object through the sense organs and as a result, gets colored with the external objects/subjects.
In order to show the importance of knowing his mind by the Soul, Seer Vyaasa referred to a scriptural verse which means that "Supreme Soul GOD is not achievable in the world, nor in the caves of mountains, nor in darkness, nor in the base of the sea; but it the cave of modifications of Soul, where he exists." Its meaning is that the yogi, first of all, gets knowledge of GOD by the inference, and study of Vedic scriptures, and then cognizes the GOD in the state of Ultra-Cognitive Trance. One who has not achieved the knowledge of the Soul and GOD by the direct perception, inference, and study of Vedic scriptures, cannot become able to cognize the Soul and GOD in the state of trance. So, by the coloring of the mind, not only the worldly affairs fulfilled but the affairs of the scriptural world are also fulfilled by it. In this way, this knowable changing mind serves both the purposes of experience and salvation for the Soul.
In the commentary on this aphorism, some commentators, with the belief of Puranas, had related the coloring of the mind with its reflection in the Soul. According to Vaachaspati Mishra the reflection of the conscious Soul in the mind makes the mind like the conscious, and then it gets colored with the objects. On the other hand, according to Vijyaanabhikshu, by the reflection in the mind, the mind gets colored with the objects, and modifications get manifested, and that mind being colored with the subjects/objects, automatically getting reflected in the conscious Soul, with the result such reflection of mind in the Soul, converts the Soul in its form. Other commentators have followed one of two lines of thought and explained accordingly. In fact, there is no reference to reflection either in the aphorism or in Vyaasa commentary, or Bhoja had said any such thing in this regard. It must be understood here that reflection of shape-full objects alone is possible in another shape-full object; neither the reflection of shapeless in shape-full is possible nor of shape-full in shapeless. It appears that these commentators had taken this principle from the monism philosophy of Acharya Shankara, where he accepted the Soul as the reflection of GOD. In fact, the applicability of reflection of the Soul, being shapeless, in mind, or reflection of modifications in the Soul is not possible. So, such a type of explanation is not according to the principles of Seer Patanjali or Seer Vyaasa. In this regard, these commentators said that the theory of reflection is accepted by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 4.23. But this statement is also on account of not understanding the concept since the said reflection is not concerned with the Soul. This is explained in the next aphorism.
