Meaning in English : (chittantara-drishye) If the mind of the previous moment is accepted as knowable by the mind generated in the present moment, (ati-prasa~NgaH) there will be a superfluity defect (buddhi-buddheH) in order to accept the other mind to know the mind generated in the present moment, (cha) and (smriti-sa~NkaraH) there will be mixture = confusion of memories.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (atha) Now (chet) if (chittam) the mind (grihyeta) is known (chittantareNa) by another mind i.e., its subsequent generable mind in the next moment, then (buddhi-buddhiH) the mind of the present moment which knows the mind of the previous moment (grihyate) will be known (kena) by which mind? On this, if they say that (saa) the mind, which knows the mind of the previous moment, (api) also be known by (anyayaa) the other mind, and (saa api) that mind also (anyayaa) be known by another mind, (iti) in this way (ati-prasa~NgaH) there is a defect of superfluity (This means that the present mind will always remain unknown), (cha) and (smriti-sa~NkaraH) there will be mixture = confusion of memories. (yaavantaH) As many (anubhavaaH) will be experiences (buddhi-buddhiinaam) of previously known minds (taavatyaH) so, many (smritayaH) memories (praapnuvanti) will be there, at the same time (cha) and (tat-sa~Nkaraat) due to mixture of those memories (eka-smritiH) one memory (anavadhaaraNam cha syaat) will not be capable of determination. (iti evam) In this way (vainaashikaiH) the advocates of momentary theory (akulii-kritam) have confused = disturbed (sarvam eva) the whole system of experience and salvation (apalapadbhiH) by not accepting (puruSham) the existence of Soul (buddhi-prati-samvedinam) who knows the modifications of the mind. (te tu) Further they are (nyaayena na sa~Ngachchhante) not logical (kalpayantaH) in imagining (bhoktri-svaruupam) the nature of experiencer = Soul (yatra kvachana) in wherever or whichever object as per their views.
(kechit tu) There are some people who (sattva-maatram api parikalpyaH) even imagine the existence of Soul by saying (saH sattvaH asti) "He is an existent pure conscious object (yaH) who (nikShipya) relinquishes (etaan pa~ncha skandhaan) these five skandhas = principles, during salvation, (cha) and (prati-sandadhaati) takes up (anyaan) others" (iti uktvaa) even after saying this they (trasyanti) are afraid of (tataH eva) accepting that eternal conscious object (punaH) again. (tathaa) Similarly, they say that (brahmacharyam chariShyaami) "I will perform continence and (guroH antike) live with the teacher (skandhaanaam mahaanirvedaaya) for the purpose of entirely doing away the skandhas = the worldly principles i.e., (viraagaaya) for securing desirelessness, (prashaantaye) complete calmness and (anutpaadaaya) not to obtain re-birth" and (iti uktvaa) after saying this they (punaH) again (apahnuvate) deny the (sattvam) existence (sattvasya eva) of the Soul = conscious object even.
(pravaadaaH) This is the accepted principle (saa.nkhya-yogaadayaH tu) of the philosophy of Saankhya and Yoga that (sva-shabdena) by the word "sva" (puruSham eva) Soul alone, (svaaminam) as lord, is (upayanti) accepted as (bhoktaaram) experiencer = enjoyer (chittasya iti) of the mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last two aphorisms, it is proved that the mind is not self-illuminating = knower of self. Now if some conscious Soul is not there to cognize the mind, then who cognizes this mind? In order to solve this problem, the opponent (believer of momentary theory) said that let the subsequent mind be the knower of its previous mind, and this way worldly affairs will take place.
In order to abrogate this conception of an opponent, Seer Patanjali said that if the mind of the previous moment is said to be known by the mind generated in the present moment, then there will be two defects — (1) defect of superfluity, and (2) defect of a mixture of memories.
1. While clarifying the defect of superfluity, Seer Vyaasa said that if the previous mind is known by the mind of the present moment, then which mind will be a knower of this present mind? Now if it is said that the mind of the next moment will be a knower of this present mind, and again the mind of the third moment will be a knower of the mind's second moment and so, on, i.e., every mind will be a knower of his previous mind only, and this sequence will not end, and this is the defect of superfluity. The other defects of this conception are as follows—
- none of the mind being the last mind, the mind will remain unknown;
- the mind of the present moment will always remain unknown since its knower will be its subsequent mind only. In this way, one will never have the knowledge of the object;
- none of the minds, being not known by the self, how will it be able to illuminate the previous mind?
- there will be one more defect in the knowledge of mind — for having the knowledge of the subject/object, the mind should be colored by that subject/object. For having the knowledge of the previous mind by the subsequent mind, the previous mind should be available at the time of the subsequent mind, then only the subsequent mind will be colored by the previous mind and the previous mind will become known to the subsequent mind. But as per the conception of momentary theory, the previous mind does not exist at the time of the subsequent mind, i.e., the previous mind had already been destroyed; so, at that point of time, since the previous mind is not available, it cannot be known to the subsequent mind and if both minds are existing at the same moment, then the momentary theory itself is proved as wrong. So, the conception of momentary theory is wrong only.
2. While clarifying the defect of a mixture of memories, Seer Vyaasa said that as many will be the experiences of the previous known mind, so, many memories will be there, at the same time, for the subsequent mind. As the previous mind had seen a jar and had the experience of that jar, and from that knowledge, there is a potency that "I know the jar", such memory will be there. Now the previous mind and its experience are known by the subsequent mind. Mind generated in the subsequent moment knows the previous mind and memory already generated of its previous mind i.e., "I experience the jar", "I experience the knowledge of jar", "I experience the knowledge of knowledge of jar"; and with regard to the knowledge of jar it will be — "I memorize the jar", "I memorize the knowledge of jar", and "I memorize the knowledge of knowledge of jar"; in this way, these memories of knowledge and experience will get complicated with every new mind generated, and there will not be knowledge of even one memory. In this way, there will be a mixture of memories.
In this regard, there will be one more defect — whether the subsequent mind can have the knowledge of any subject/object, in the present moment, other than the knowledge and memories of the previous mind? (In principle it is not possible, since only one activity is possible in the mind at a moment). If yes! then we have to accept mixed-up memories of various subjects in the subsequent minds of the present mind, which will not be possible to accept without accepting the existence of the conscious Soul; and if not! then in such a case, there cannot be knowledge of more than one subject and its memory in any mind. But in real life, one has knowledge of innumerable subjects/objects in one's lifetime. So, the conception of momentary theory is against real perception.
Seer Vyaasa had abrogated the conception of momentary theory in one more way in his commentary. These idealistic people imagine the existence of the Soul and say that - "the Soul adopts the five principles during his lifetime and relinquishes them and takes up other five principles during the salvation." Even after accepting this conception, they do not accept the identity of an eternal conscious Soul as described in Vedic scriptures. These people for the purpose of relinquishing these principles and for securing desirelessness, live with the teacher and perform continence, and put efforts to achieve salvation but deny the existence of a conscious Soul. If an eternal conscious Soul is non-existing, then for whose salvation there is a performance of continence !!!
So, the principles of idealistic and momentary theorists are defective and hence not acceptable. In the Vedic scriptures, there is acceptance of an eternal conscious Soul and it is believed that the Soul alone is the lord of the mind who experiences all the subjects/objects which become available in the mind. So, the mind is knowable and the Soul is its knower.

— कोई भी चित्त अन्तिम चित्त न होने से, चित्त का ज्ञान वस्तुतः हो ही नहीं पायेगा;
— वर्त्तमान क्षण में उपलब्ध होने वाला चित्त सदा अज्ञात रहेगा, क्योंकि उसका ज्ञाता तो उत्तरवर्ती चित्त ही होता है। इस प्रकार से व्यक्ति को कभी भी पदार्थ का ज्ञान नहीं हो सकता;
